As we have already seen in the introduction, the ultimate goal of all Bible
study is application, not interpretation. Since God wants to change our lives
through his Word, it is important to learn how to apply Scripture to our lives
before learning any other methods of Bible study. In fact, the techniques you
learn in this chapter will be used in each of the following study methods.
Regardless of the method you choose to use, at the end of each study you will
need to make practical steps of application concerning the things the Lord shows
you. (In this book, every time we talk about application, refer back to this
method for an explanation.) When you use these techniques by themselves (and not
with another method), it is called 'The Devotional Method of Bible Study.' This
is the type of simple study that you can use in your quiet time. Definition The
Devotional Method of Bible Study involves taking a passage of the Bible, large
or small, and prayerfully meditating on it until the Holy Spirit shows you a way
to apply its truth to your own life in a way that is personal, practical,
possible, and provable. The goal is for you to take seriously the Word of God
and 'do what it says' (James 1:22). Why Application Is Important The Bible was
given to us to show us how we can have a relationship with Almighty God and how
we are to live our lives his way in this world. It was given to change our lives
to become more like that of Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul declared that it is
useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training the believer in
righteous living (2 Tim. 3:16). The Bible is a practical book, for it is
concerned with practical godly living. Bible study without personal application
can be just an academic exercise with no spiritual value. The Bible was written
to be applied to our lives. In his succinct way Howard Hendricks has said,
'Interpretation without application is abortion!' We want to note here that
application is necessary for our Christian lives, that it is hard work, and that
good applications are possible if we follow some basic principles. Application
Is Necessary for Our Lives Study of the Word of God should lead to its
application in our lives, with the result that the Scriptures change us to
conform more with the will of God. Step One --- Pray for Insight on How to Apply

are not planning on applying the lessons you receive from your Bible study, it
would be better for you to not study the Bible at all! You will just be heaping
more judgment on yourself! John Milton, a great Christian poet, is reputed to
have said, 'The end of all learning is to know God, and out of that knowledge to
love and imitate Him.' That sums up what we are talking about in applying our
study of Scripture: we are to know God, love him, and then be like him.
Application Is Hard Work It would seem that applying the Bible would be fairly
simple, but actually it is the hardest part of Bible study. Why is that?
Application doesn't happen by accident. We have to plan for it, or it will never
come about. Three things that make applying Scripture to our lives so difficult
are that it requires thinking, the devil fights it viciously, and we naturally
resist change.

THE HEART OF MY BIBLE STUDIES FOR 15 YEARS
I have had 12 DYNAMIC METHODS OF BIBLE STUDY which I received from Billy
Graham's ministry in 1990. I assume this book is a revision of the other. My
RYRIE STUDY BIBLE and this book are the heart and soul of my personal Bible
study since I am a layman who was brought up in the Catholic church. I felt led
by God to see that the Book Survey Method, the Chapter Study Method and the Book
Synthesis method all taken together formed a complete blueprint for studying a
complete book of the Bible. My best study was the 3600 page study that I did on
the Book of Ezekiel. When I got bored with the book studies, I looked up the
topical study method. So, I have 25 of these book and topical studies since
1990.I would say that this book is very very helpful because in 1986 when I
became interested in Bible prophecy, I just could not find that many books on
that subject at the local Christian bookstore. And Chuck Swindoll does not have
many books or study guides on that subject; so I just went out on my own and did
my own personal studies. I think it is actually better to read and study the
Bible on your own and draw you own conclusions than to just read it in someone
else's book.That seemed to work well for WWI Hero SArgeant York whose church
encouraged people to read the Bible on their own and decide what it meant to
their hearts and consciences.Sometimes, authors seem to leave things out that I
have noticed on my own: Like who is the Second Beast of Revelation 13-maybe the
US and the UK?! No one seems to try to expound on that subject in Christian
prophecy books!I also have LIVING BY THE BOOK bu Howard Hendricks and
INDEPENDENT BIBLE STUDY byu Irving Jensen. I have never taken a Seminary class
on Bible study. And I get bits and pieces here and there; yet Rick Warren's book
is really the foundation of my studies. It is like when I got whipped in
intramural chess in high school in 7 or 15 moves by the captain of the chess
team and I went out to try to learn from study books as he advised on how to
play better. So, this like the book CHESS IN ONE HOUR that I bought at the Hobby
Store. It tells you everything you need to know in a hurry in a bare bones
manner!

I'm a Bible school student and had this text as one of two for a Bible Study
Teaching Methods class. The book is an excellent resource for learning some
basic methods of Bible study you can do on your own and then teach others to do
as well.
The only complaint I have about this book is the binding (hence the 4 stars). It
is so poor that the spine cracked and pages were falling out before I finished
reading the 2nd chapter. I'm going to contact the publisher and see if they will
send me another book. Until then, I'll have to use lots of tape to keep the
pages in place!
Other than this, the book is excellent and would be a great addition to any
Christian's library, but especially if you are a teacher of the Bible.

The Bible is a special book. So much wisdom! No other book contains prophesy
that is fulfilled. I have read the Bible through four times. Bible Study Methods
is not a book that you just read through like Purpose Driven Life, it is just
what the title says, a list of methods that you can use to study people in the
Bible, chapters, words topics or other subjects. It points you to other
resources most of which are available on the internet now. If you will get this
book and use it to dig into the Bible you will find deeper meaning. There is
more under the hood than you thought. Do a study and I think you will find it
very rewarding and humbling. One thing you might enjoy more is listening to
someone else who has used the book tell about the studies they did.
You can be flexible when you use the methods. Sometimes it is hard to tell when
the study of a word becomes the study of a topic or a theme. You can use methods
from all three. There are lots of good Bible concordances, commentaries, and
encyclopedia's on the internet so you might not use the exact one that is
recommended in the book if you can't find it (or you could probably order it
from Amazon!). You can find Strong's numbers for KJV and NASB on BibleHub. I
would give this book 10 stars if I could. But to benefit from it you are going
to have to commit hours of time over days and in some cases weeks. Some of the
studies can be done in a few hours but others will take weeks. I recommend it
highly. You will have to get in and drive it around, but it will blow your doors
off!
