WILDLIFE BIOLOGISTS ARE USING ‘SCOUT SNAKES’ WITH RADIO TRANSMITTERS TO CAPTURE
INVASIVE PYTHONS

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. — Spanning more than 74,000 acres in all, the Picayune
Strand State Forest east of Naples is expansive.

The forest is a true piece of Florida wild: it’s home to black bears, bald
eagles, and even the Florida panther.

But also living in the forest is an apex predator that threatens the very
wildlife within: the invasive Burmese Python. Their massive size — upwards of
16-feet long — is emblematic of the problem they pose.

“(They are) decimating native wildlife. In fact, it’s easier to say what they
don’t eat than what they do eat,” Ian Bartoszek, a wildlife biologist with the
Conservancy of Southwest Florida, explained to NBC2 inside their headquarters.

“They’re severely disrupting the natural balance of the greater Everglades
ecosystem,” Bartoszek added.

That’s why Bartoszek and his team at the conservancy work to capture and remove
the pythons — and they’ve gotten creative in how they do it.

“Here’s a radio transmitter. This will be surgically implanted inside a male
python,” Bartoszek explained, showing NBC2 a small, red piece of equipment.

Male pythons implanted with a transmitter are referred to as ‘scout snakes.’
Using a directional antenna, biologists can track the males, which leads them
straight to the reproductive females.

“So when we are pointing to our animal, it’ll be loud,” Bartoszek explained with
the antenna. “And then when we’re pointing away, it’ll be faint.”

This past season, thanks to funding from the Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission and support from the Naples Zoo, the conservancy was
able to put ten more scout snakes out into the wild.

“This season, I believed we removed 4,000 pounds of python,” Bartoszek said.
“We’re looking for those haystacks. Those breeding areas where the pythons are
taking us to. That’s half the battle. But then you have to find the needles —
the females — and so using our scout snakes, they help us find the needles in
the haystack.”

But why is targeting females so important?

Ian Easterling, a wildlife biologist with the conservancy, brought out one of
their recent captures to help illustrate.

The female python, a massive 16-feet long and 150 pounds, was humanely
euthanized after it was caught. With an NBC2 camera rolling, Easterling cut open
the snake to reveal dozens of egg follicles inside it.

Easterling counted each of them, ending at a huge number: 82 egg follicles
inside just one python.

“She was going to drop almost double the average size clutch. High-value
target,” Easterling said. “That’s a lot of pythons that aren’t eating more
animals and making more pythons.”

The high-tech tracking can help keep the wildlife in the Florida wild.

“We want (Burmese Pythons) out of the system,” Bartoszek explained. “We’re not
going to find them all, but our research, our tracking, our understanding of
this animal has led us to the removal of extra-large pythons.”

Bartoszek said no matter how much people may be spooked by the pythons, they are
not interested in humans.

People can help combat the invasive species by reporting sightings to wildlife
officials:
