SANMAR, KONGSBERG AND RAL RETHINK THE TWIN-THRUSTER HARBOR TUG

Published Jan 24, 2022 3:45 PM by The Maritime Executive

Sanmar Shipyards is getting ready to build a large series of next-gen harbor
tugs with twin azimuth thrusters arranged fore and aft. The 60-tonne bollard
pull tugs were designed by Robert Allan Ltd., and the propulsion arrangement has
a conceptual resemblance to the firm's other high maneuverability fore-and-aft
designs, the triple-thruster RotorTug and the twin Voith-drive RAVE.  RAL
designed the unique new series for longtime client Svitzer, the global towage

LNG TAKES OFF WITH ORDERING BOOM AND NEW BUNKERING INFRASTRUCTURE

2021 was a banner year for the expansion of LNG as a marine fuel, according to
industry association SEA-LNG. In its annual report, the group pointed to
record-setting newbuild orders for dual-fuel LNG vessels and an expanding
network of bunkering facilities as further evidence that this fuel option is a
popular and growing choice for vessel operators.  Citing data from Clarksons,

NEW OPTIONS TO STOP LA'S INTERMODAL RAIL THEFT PROBLEM

During mid-January, news reports from Los Angeles exposed the ongoing problem of
theft from shipping containers carried aboard slow-moving trains. Thieves climb
aboard slow-moving trains and cut open locks of container doors before throwing
out boxes of items. There may be a few strategies that while initially costly,
could reduce future theft from containers while being carried at low speed
aboard railway cars. Introduction Brazen thieves have been boarding slow moving
container trains in a district of Los Angeles...

UNMANNED PATROL BOATS TAKE ANOTHER STEP FORWARD

Unmanned small craft are filling an increasing number of roles in defense, like

dangerous jobs that are harder to carry out with human sailors. This week,
Turkey and the UK both announced new steps forward in fielding capable unmanned
patrol craft for defending harbors and high-value assets. In Turkey, ARES
Shipyard and Meteksan Defense completed testing of an integrated .50-caliber
remote-controlled weapon system on their ULAQ unmanned vessel. The first...

TOTALENERGIES AND CHEVRON WALK AWAY FROM MYANMAR'S YADANA GAS FIELD

Myanmar's military junta is losing Western participation in the Yadana field,
the offshore development that supplies half of the country's gas (and half the
fuel for power generation). The project provides a steady stream of export
revenue for the state-owned Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE), and it is a
key source of income for the regime.   After years of pressure from human rights
groups, TotalEnergies - which owns a 31 percent operating stake in Yadana - has
announced that...

CONTAINERSHIP ORDERS AT RECORD LEVELS WITH NEW ORDER LINKED TO MSC

After a record year for containership construction orders, 2022 is starting
strong with China reporting a first large order. The contract reported by Dalian
Shipbuilding Industry, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation
(CSSC), also is the latest convergence of two trends in shipbuilding,
containerships and LNG-fueled ships. DSIC reported that it has entered into a
construction contract for six dual-fuel containerships with “a well-known
European shipowner.” The order is being linked to Mediterranean Shipping
Company, which was moving aggressively...
