Get out in the community and enjoy some of the biggest events in metro Detroit. This weekend, Sept. 15-17, 2023, brings so many fun things to do including the Detroit Auto Show, fall festivals including Downtown Saline’s Oktoberfest and the Romulus Pumpkin Festival, a performance by Duran Duran, and much more. HARVEST MOON CELEBRATION Enjoy the pale moonlight in downtown Farmington as you taste harvest food, craft cider, and beer (over 40 options, to be exact), fine wines, and even live music. Those who wish to drink must purchase a ticket. Sept. 14-16. $10 ticket admission, must be 21+. 33113 Grand River Ave., Farmington; downtownfarmington.org. TROY FAMILY DAZE This 53rd annual event offers four days of fun including carnival games and rides, a 5K run, food, live entertainment, and so much more. METRO BOAT SHOW Boating enthusiasts gather along the water at Lake St. Clair Metropark to shop vendors selling sailing gear, lake cruises, live music at the Tiki Bar, lawn games, kids’ activities and much more. DOWNTOWN SALINE OKTOBERFEST Enjoy live musical performances by Local Heroes and Fifty Amp Fuse, get your fill of seasonal beers in the Bier Garden, visit the Kinderplatz for kids’ activities like magic shows and bounce houses, shop vendor booths, and more. ROMULUS PUMPKIN FESTIVAL Head to Romulus Historical Park for the Parade of Lights and a street festival that features music, food, crafts, and games. LYSISTRATA BY ARISTOPHANES This comedy tells the story of a woman who is weary of the Peloponnesian war and launches a campaign to end the fighting by withholding sex from all men. ROUGE PARK BUFFALO SOLDIERS AND BLUES FREEDOM FESTIVAL The Friends of Rough Park hosts this event to highlight the history of the all-Black U.S. Army units, the Buffalo Soldiers. Enjoy pony rides and museum and barn tours along with live music, food, and lawn games. Sept. 16. Free to attend but advance registration is required. FRANKENFEST Ghouls, monsters, and even Frankenstein himself roam downtown Detroit during this chilling festival, which hosts mystical artwork, scary literary vendors, and paranormal experts. DURAN DURAN Get ready for an ’80s throwback when this beloved English new-wave act stops at Little Caesars Arena to support its latest studio album, Future Past. Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, the band released a slew of influential hits in the early 1980s, including “Rio” and “Hungry Like the Wolf” — the latter of which won the group a Grammy Award for best short-form music video in 1984. Duran Duran will be joined by prolific disco stars Nile Rodgers and Chic along with contemporary British pop-rockers Bastille. Sept. 16. $29+. HARVEST FESTIVAL SPICER’S ORCHARD Take a drive to the countryside of metro Detroit and enjoy this family-friendly event, which offers pumpkins, apples, and delicious wine. NORTH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW The main draw is a variety of auto displays and demonstrations, but this annual also offers encounters with more than 80 dinosaurs, a drone show, and rides in an F-150 Lightning. Ten food trucks will be on site to keep you satiated and there’s a full schedule of music performances and other live entertainment. Sept. 16-24. $20 for adults, $12 for seniors, $10 for kids 3-12, and $50 for a family pass for two adults and three kids. Various locations, downtown Detroit. ENCOUNTER A collaborative exhibit featuring furniture designer Nina Cho and fiber artist Minji NamKoong, this gallery explores how their shared Korean cultural heritage creates a unified aesthetic between the artists’ differing design mediums: Cho’s specialization being minimalistic furniture and mirrors, NamKoong’s in hand-sewn compositions inspired by Korean patchwork. JESSICA KIRSON This New Jersey-born comedian, actress, and producer established herself by performing at some of New York City’s most notable comedy clubs — including Laugh Factory, Carolines, and Gotham Comedy Club. Her 2019 Comedy Central special, Talking to Myself, was produced by Bill Burr and featured Kirson’s self-deprecating takes on dating as a lesbian and growing up as the child of a therapist. Kirson currently works as a contributor on The Howard Stern Show, where she produces and participates in hilarious prank phone calls. Sept. 17. $35. DEATH GRIPS Combining elements of punk rock, electronic, and industrial music, this experimental hip-hop trio’s 2012 debut album, The Money Store, was met with rabid critical and fan acclaim. Known for incorporating extensive improvisation and bizarre stage stunts, including handcuffed performances and destruction of instruments, a Death Grips live show promises to be anything but boring.
