DUEX MAX PORTABLE MONITOR REVIEW 2023 – PRODUCTIVITY MAX

INTRODUCTION

As with most, if not all photographers, we all appreciate having quality screen
estate for our edits and I am not an exception. When I go for trips, it is
obvious I won’t be able to lug along my 32 inches or 27 inches display alongside
my MacBook Pro 14 and thus I was looking at potential solutions and Mobile
Pixel’s Duex Max available here appeared as a worth considering option.

My 27 in monitor setup at home which is hardly portable.

If you have been following this site, you will know I very rarely cover
non-photography equipment and this is one of those times I have come across this
one item that has impressed me and let us find out more.

TL:DR

The Duex Max from Mobile Pixels addresses the issue for laptop users on the move
who need more screen estate space to complete their professional or creative
work in an efficient and effective manner.

> The Duex Max can be described as a high quality plug-and-play portable monitor
> that attaches to your laptop by magnets.

The Duex Max stands out for the quality of its display and most important of
all, the ease of set-up and in our world of many other portable monitor options.
It is not the cheapest and likely will never be, but you get value for your
money as the Duex Max belongs to the category of ‘buy once buy right’ products
and worth considering if you are looking for one.

TECHNICALITIES

My set of the Duex Max in Blue

The Duex Max is not Mobil Pixel’s first foray into monitors, in fact thus is the
4th generation and currently their top tier model specially designed for laptops
with monitors 14 inches upwards. This recommendation is important to pay heed to
as the Duex Max attaches to the laptop itself on the laptop monitor back side
and it is simply not the smartest move to attach say a 14.1 inches monitor to a
11 inches sized laptop.

 * Dimensions:  32 x 22.6 x 0.6 cm (12.6 x 8.9 x 0.25 in)
 * Weight: 816 grams (1.8 lbs)
 * Material: PC-ABS plastic & aluminum alloy
 * Display: 1080p full HD display, 300 nits maximum at 60 Hz and 16:9 aspect
   ratio.
 * Screen size: 14.1″
 * Connectivity: two USB-C ports
 * Signal type: hybrid, DisplayPort Alt, and USB video signals can be used
 * Compatibility: Windows, macOS, Nintendo Switch, Dex, select Android phones

What is also important for me is that it only weighs 800+grams for a monitor
size larger than the most common 13 inch laptops. And at 1.47 cm (0.58 inches)
at its thickest point, it is a truly portable option. For the ones bothered
about colour coordination, I understand there are silver, blue, red, and green
options for the chassis.

The 14.1 inch Full HD screen of the Duex Max

The monitor slides out from its casing for use, providing options for a
landscape experience attached to the laptop, and a standing portrait orientation
if you prefer so. The stand’s range of motion is commendable too, being able to
fold 180 degrees on the back of the laptop for use in presentations.

At 300 nits, 60 Hz, and with a 16:9 aspect ratio, the Duex Max performed well
for the writing of this review, which easily took a cumulative 20 plus hours.

> I was surprised to find out that the Duex Max had exceeded USD1.6 million in
> Kickstarter and Indiegogo funding.

PERFORMANCE

Setting up the Deux Max was actually simpler than I had expected, and an
one-time affair.

In fact, all one needs to do after unpacking the portable monitor is to simply
place the included cupboard template onto one’s laptop to align the position of
the magnets, affix the four magnets and you are done. Anyone can probably finish
this in say, 5 minutes? Assuming you are literally trying to drag the process as
long as possible.

> I have to be honest that while the design concept of the Duex Max isn’t
> revolutionary, but similar to Apple, the Duex Max simply works the way it
> should out of the box and this is extremely important to me.

Once the one-time setup is done, all one needs to operate the Duex Max is to
well, clip the Deux Max onto the laptop monitor side, slide the screen out and
attach the USB-C to USB-C cable and ahem, that’s it.

Once plugged in, the monitor Duex Max wakes up immediately and is ready for use.

The back of the Duex Max presents three buttons, allowing you to make
adjustments to the image quality such as colour, tint, and brightness. Two
interesting options were the EyeCareMode allowing change in temperature of the
screen and the G-Sensor which controls the auto-rotation function. It flips the
screen image when you rotate the monitor to slide it out on the opposite side or
stand it up next to your laptop.

Any worries I had about the Duex Max being too heavy for the laptop were
completely unfounded too, with the device well build more sturdy than I actually
expected.

And of course, using the Duex Max next was a breeze, with one side managing the
photo editing side of things and the other side managing the write-up in this
case.

OF COURSE, THERE IS NO PERFECT PRODUCT…

I am nit-picking here, hence if you are also the owner of one, please do not be
offended.

One thing to note however as portable monitors go, the Deux Max despite how good
it is, will not match the colour accuracy and sheer quality of the Macbook Pro
14’s built in monitor and in this sense, I do my photo-editing on the Mac side
of monitor while using the Deux Max for word-processing or in today’s sense,
typing out this review.

Another potential issue is I guess I am not sure how over the long-run, will
attaching the weight of the Deux Max to your laptop’s monitor side cause any
issues. I was bothered with directly sticking the magnets onto the laptop, so I
opted to attach the magnets to a well fitted plastic cover on the Macbook Pro 14
instead. Of course there are many other ways to use the Duex Max without a
direct attachment such as using it as a vertical orientation.

> Also, if one isn’t keen on the magnetic system, Mobile Pixels does sell stands
> which one can use to have the Duex Max work side by side with your laptop.

Note that Mobile Pixel does include spare stickers for you if you ever wish to
make adjustments or change a laptop.

CONCLUSIONS

In my opinion, key to a good choice for a portable monitor would be a good
balance between portability, screen quality and power consumption in which the
Duex Max maintains a very good balance between these three.

Not mentioned often enough is that there are also actually at least 4 different
ways to use the Duex Max monitor: as a presentation screen, in a standing
vertical orientation mode, a slide out extended monitor or an extended second
monitor and these also coupled with a decent Full HD resolution at 60 Hz refresh
rates makes the Duex Max a competent choice for anyone looking for a quality
portable monitor.

> Not mentioned enough is that there are multiple ways to use the Duex Max.

In all, even in this market where options are aplenty, not all options tick as
many boxes as the Duex Max does, and I can confidently say the Duex Max is one
well thought out product I use myself and which I can recommend.

All folded up and portable

Thank you for reading.

Thank you for the review, would you know how long the MBP14’s battery can
    last with the screen attached?

Hi William, welcome. Foremost, I will highly suggest that we use the Duex
Max be used with the MBP connected to power. If not and really on the go,
this is highly dependent on how power intensive the software we use are,
but I figure a few good hours is definitely doable for a MBP that’s rated
       for 24 hours.
