in a day of on-campus activities, including offering feedback on strategic

Appleby College has been awarded the Platinum Certification from EcoSchools for
the 2022-2023 school year! Thank you to faculty members Han Chau and Amanda
Sobol, along with students in the RP2 Eco-Mentors co-curricular for gathering
data and submitting the application. This is the first year that Appleby has
obtained the Platinum level of certification and it is a reflection of the many
student-led sustainability initiatives that have been happening around the

From May 19 to 27, 13 students participated in a science and culture trip to
Switzerland along with faculty members Daniel van Walleghem and Anjuli Ahooja.
The group met multiple scientists, experienced private tours of facilities, and
participated in hands-on experiments. The trip included a visit to the Paul
Scherrer Institute in Bern where they received a rare tour of the Swiss Light
Source, a massive synchrotron, and the group learned about proton therapy for
cancer treatment. Everyone also visited CERN in Geneva, which included the
Antimatter Factory and Large Hadron Collider, where protons are smashed together
at over 99.99% the speed of light, to learn more about the very nature of our
universe. The trip also included a visit to the top of Mount Titlis and St.
Beatus Caves. #ApplebyCollege #IndependentSchool

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day. It is held each year on the summer
solstice and is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the history, heritage,
resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis across Canada. Later
today, as part of Appleby College’s Closing Day Ceremonies, Appleby's Choir will
perform “Earth Blessings” by Cree-Dene composer Sherryl Sewepagaham. The piece
will provide an opportunity to reflect on our relationship with the earth and
our responsibility to protect and care for our land and waters. Members of the
choir participated in virtual workshops with Sherryl Sewepagaham to work on the
pronunciation of the Woodland Cree Y-dialect and to receive coaching on the

and Leaving Class Luncheon on campus. It was a wonderful opportunity for the

Following a Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA)
Championship, on June 11 and 12, Appleby's Junior Boys' Rugby team competed in
the Barbarian Cup in Belleville, Ontario. The tournament is composed of regional
champions from around the province as well as wildcard entries. Appleby won
Group D on the first day of the tournament, going 3-0 while outscoring opponents
88-0 and playing some incredibly sound defensive rugby. This set up a semi-final
match against Waterloo Collegiate Institute who also won their group. Appleby
took the semi-final game with a dominant defensive performance by a score of
22-10. Appleby then met La Salle Secondary in the final, they rallied throughout
the game putting together strong defensive stands and getting the score to 14-10
before running out of time. While taking home the silver medal against some
formidable opponents, the students were exceptional ambassadors both on and off
