ANDREW JANOWCZYK Assistant Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology and Department of Oncology, Division of Precision Oncology, Department of Diagnostics, Division of Clinical Pathology, Geneva University Hospitals, Switzerland Dr Andrew Janowczyk is an Assistant Professor at the Emory Precision AI for Health Institute (EmPathI) at Emory University, and a data analyst at the Geneva University Hospitals in the Oncology and Pathology departments. For nearly 15 years he has applied computer vision algorithms to digital pathology images to build tools for disease diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy response prediction. He helped co-found and was elected secretary of the Swiss Digital Pathology Consortium (SDiPath). He leads the development of the HistoTools suite, a set of open-source computational pathology tools for quality control (histoqc.com), annotation (quickannotator.com), labeling (patchsorter.com), validation (cohortfinder.com). His newer research focuses on the tasks of predicting prognosis and therapy response using machine and deep learning. He maintains a research-oriented blog, andrewjanowczyk.com, which aims to provide digital pathology related insights, code, and datasets to the research community. KATRIEN GRUNBERG Professor & Chair of the Department of Pathology, Bigpicture co-coordinator, Radboud University Katrien Grünberg is a professor of pathology and head of the department of pathology at Radboud university medical center in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Pathology Radboud UMC focuses on innovative molecular diagnostics and on computational pathology science and solutions. The department made a full transition to digital pathology in 2020, including a transition to working from home, online expert consultation and regional collaboration. As president of the Dutch Scientific Society, she was one of the initiators of the Pathology Image Exchange platform (PIE) that allows all Dutch pathology labs to share whole slide images for consultation, revision and panel discussion. She co-coordinates the IMI BigPicture project that aims to create a European platform for sharing data, tools and algorithms to promote AI science and drug development and eventually to bring AI tools to clinical pathology practice. ANNA BODÉN Deputy Director, Consultant Pathology, Department of Clinical Pathology, and Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences. Linköping University Hospital DAVID SNEAD Professor & Consultant Pathologist UHCW NHS Trust Coventry and Director of PathLAKE and Professor of Pathology Warwick Medical School Coventry, UK Professor Snead is a consultant cellular pathologist at the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW). He has been in post at Coventry for 27 years. He is the founding director of PathLAKE He is an international expert in the use of digital pathology, having led Coventry to be one of the first hospitals in the world to switch to digital pathology for routine diagnosis. He served as clinical service lead for over 10 years at UHCW and is an expert assessor for UKAS for DP. This experience has given him a unique understanding of how innovative AI based solutions can be deployed to address the major challenges facing cellular pathology departments globally. In 2023 he co-founded Histofy a company producing AI solutions for digital pathology. After boot-strapped investment of £1m the company aims to complete its seed round funding shortly and is launching its first products on to the market in 2025. There are no shortcuts to achieving excellent results with AI solutions, but a career’s experience in diagnostic cellular pathology gives an invaluable understanding of where these innovations can be best deployed for the benefits of patients and pathologists. ISABELLE SALMON Head of the Department of Pathology, Erasme Hospital JO MARTIN Professor of Pathology, Queen Mary University of London Professor Martin qualified Cambridge University and London Hospital Medical College, has a University of London PhD and Masters in Leadership. She has over 130 published papers including Nature group and Science journals and is Deputy Vice Principal (Health) and Professor of Pathology at Queen Mary University London. Her clinical specialist expertise is in the pathology of gastrointestinal motility disorders, and she is an Honorary Consultant Histopathologist at Barts Health NHS Trust. She is an award winning eCPD app designer and co-founder of Biomoti, a drug delivery development company. She developed and leads an innovative multi-million pound adaptive learning programme for RCPath and the NHS England Technology Enhanced Learning team. She served as a director on the Board of Barts Health NHS Trust for 5 years. She has very broad experience in healthcare management including responsibility for local and regional research and for the training and education of over 17,500 staff and as Medical Director of the large multi site Trust. National Clinical Director of Pathology for NHS England April 2013-16, Jo was President of the Royal College of Pathologists from November 2017-2020, and has been National Specialty Advisor for Pathology for NHS England since 2020. PETER SCHIRMACHER Director, Institute of Pathology Heidelberg University Hospital; President, European Society of Pathology MARILYN BUI Scientific Director of Analytic Microscopy Core at Moffitt Cancer Center, Moffitt Cancer Center; Chair of digital and computation Pathology Committee of CAP Dr. Marilyn Bui is a patient-centered pathologist dedicated to enhancing patient care through a blend of pathology practice, research, education, advocacy, and service. Her expertise spans bone and soft tissue pathology, cytopathology, biomarker testing, digital pathology, and AI. She has authored over 224 peer-reviewed articles, 30 book chapters, and three books. She is an award-winning educator and mentor. She is an inventor with three patents in digital pathology and cancer diagnostics. Her leadership roles in digital pathology and imaging informatics include that she served as Chair of the expert panel for the HER2 quantitative image analysis of breast cancer guidelines for the College of American Pathologists (CAP), is the current Chair of the Digital and Computational Pathology committee of CAP and sits on the boards of the Digital Pathology Association and the Society of Imaging Informatics in Medicine. CARA BRODIE histopathology/ISH Core Facility, Cancer Research UK CORINNA WOLF Subject Matter Expert Digital Pathology After graduating from the University of Heidelberg, Corinna joined Roche’s Pharma Research & Early Development unit as a postdoctoral researcher in the field of tissue biomarkers & histopathology. Her research raised awareness for the susceptibility of certain tissue-based biomarkers to pre-analytic variables, and her participation in Roche’s Postdoc Fellowship Program enabled cross-functional fertilization. After her tenure at Roche, Corinna coordinated the m4 Biobank Alliance as part of Munich’s m4 Cluster of Excellence. For the past ten years, Corinna has been with Merck Healthcare KGaA, where incipiently she established the company’s biorepository. Since 2018, Corinna has been providing state of the art digital pathology support for the company’s biomarker and companion diagnostics activities in clinical development. EVITA SADIMIN Chief, Division of Pathology Informatics and Data Science Department of Pathology, City of Hope National Medical Center Evita Sadimin, MD is an Associate Professor of Pathology, and Chief of the Division of Pathology Informatics and Data Science at City of Hope. She completed her Fellowship in Pathology Informatics and her residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, serving as Chief Resident, at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She then completed a Fellowship in Genitourinary Pathology at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. After her Genitourinary Pathology fellowship, she joined the faculty of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Her experiences include working with informatics, LIS and IT teams in establishing digital pathology services, supporting daily informatics activities in clinical and research efforts, improving and expanding clinical data warehouse, and supporting biorepository services. In addition, her clinical work focuses on urologic oncology pathology. NINA LINDER Professor (Guest), Uppsala University, Sweden and Researcher at the Institute for Molecular Medicine - FIMM, University of Helsinki, Finland Nina Linder is an MD, PhD, currently holding a position as Guest Professor of Medical Diagnostic Artificial Intelligence at the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health, Uppsala University, Sweden. She is also a researcher at the Institute for Molecular Medicine – FIMM, University of Helsinki, Finland. Her research focuses on the development of novel AI-based solutions for cancer and infectious disease diagnostics. The overall goal of the research is to promote the implementation of digital diagnostics to improve the translation from basic medical research to the clinic. She has co-headed several clinical studies employing AI-based diagnostics at the point-of-care in a global setting STEFAN PLATZ Clinical Pharmacology & Safety Sciences, AstraZeneca Stefan Platz is the Senior Vice President of Clinical Pharmacology and Safety Sciences within AstraZeneca’s BioPharmaceuticals R&D unit. In this role, Stefan is responsible for the non-clinical safety assessment of all drug candidates, delivery of non-clinical and clinical bioanalysis strategies and clinical pharmacology and pharmacometrics. He leads a global department of 600 scientists spread across Sweden, UK and the US. Stefan has a degree in veterinary medicine from the University of Munich and is a German certified veterinary pathologist as well as Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology. He started his career in 1996 at Boehringer-Ingelheim. Before joining AstraZeneca in February 2012, Stefan led the non-clinical safety organisations for Hoffmann-La Roche in both Basel and Palo Alto. During this time period he also had extended periods of strategic responsibilities for the early safety screening as well as biologics safety. Stefan is particularly interested in exploring novel approaches and technologies to better predict human safety based on in vitro and in silico data. Recent investments by AstraZeneca in microphysiological systems may help to understand safety risks in patients based on a dynamic cell system mimicking full organ functionality. Together with modelling and simulation of human data this might accelerate drug development and result in a reduction in number of animal used in preclinical testing. LAURI DIEHL Executive Director Nonclinical Safety & Pathobiology, Gilead LORENZO RESSEL Professor of Veterinary Pathology, University of Liverpool Lorenzo Ressel is a Professor of Veterinary Pathology and Head of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy and Physiology at the University of Liverpool. He earned his veterinary degree in 2005 in Italy, followed by a PhD in Veterinary Medicine (Pathology). Ressel worked in biomedical research on animal models for stem cell therapy before moving into diagnostic histopathology and cytology. He joined the University of Liverpool as a Lecturer, became a Senior Lecturer, and was promoted to Professor in 2019. In 2015, he became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary. His research focuses on digital technologies in veterinary pathology, animal models pathology, and forensic veterinary pathology. He serves on the editorial boards of international scientific journals and has authored over 90 peer-reviewed publications. BASHARAT HUSSAIN Deployment Director, National Pathology Imaging Co-operative (NPIC) DR DARREN TREANOR Consultant Pathologist, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Clinical Professor of Pathology, University of Leeds, Adjunct Professor of Digital Pathology, Linköping University and Director, National Pathology Imaging Co-operative JOHN LE QUESNE Professor of Molecular Pathology, CRUK Beatson Institute John Le Quesne trained as an RNA biochemist (1992-1999, Cambridge and Leicester) before studying medicine (1999-2004, London) and specialising in histopathology (2005-2013, Cambridge, Leicester). Since 2014 he has been a group leader at the MRC Toxicology Unit in Leicester. His group uses a combination of classical and novel quantitative pathological methods to make and test hypotheses about human tumour biology, using large archival tumour collections, with pulmonary adenocarcinoma as a model system. Their biological interests are centred upon genotypic and phenotypic heterogeneity within tumours, and especially the role of altered translational control in the development of the malignant phenotype, and subsequent epithelial plasticity. They are identifying recurrent pathways and mechanisms by which translational dysregulation is employed by developing tumour clones in the microenvironment of primary human malignancies. LASZLO IGALI Consultant Histopathologist, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Being a practising histopathologist at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital since 1999, one of the busiest department in the UK, I appreciate the importance of state of the art medical informatics. Had a strong interest in healthcare informatics, been active on the field since 1980s, involving paperless hospital systems and cross-system database integration. Digital pathology also one of main interests interested in the standardisation of the digital pathology data, metadata development, dynamic SNOMED CT coding and educational aspects. Have been appointed as the Informatics Advisor for the Royal College of Pathologists 2011, Chair of the RCPath Informatics Committee since 2020. Have completed an MSc in Healthcare management in 2011 and MSc in Healthcare Informatics in 2022. MATTHEW HUMPHRIES Research Portfolio Delivery Manager, National Pathology Imaging Co-operative (NPIC) ORLY ARDON Director Digital Pathology Operations and Assistant Attending, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Orly Ardon is the Director of Digital Pathology Operations and an assistant member at the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She has expertise in microbiology, molecular, and digital pathology. Orly completed the degrees of BSc, MSc, and Ph.D. in Microbiology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and an Executive MBA from the University of Utah. Her postdoctoral training was in cell biology and virology at the University of Utah. Before joining MSKCC, Orly was heading the development of novel computer assisted diagnostic tools and the expansion of digital pathology collaborative initiatives at ARUP Laboratories in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dr. Ardon career focuses on diagnostic test advancements and laboratory innovation. Her work in digital pathology is centered on operational aspects of the digital technologies and the clinical implementation of laboratory automation. Her interests also include process improvements and healthcare economics. RENATE KAIN Head of Pathology, University of Vienna Renate Kain, MD., PhD, Head of Department, Full Professor of Pathology at the Department of Pathology of the Medical University of Vienna, is a research active, fully trained histo- and cytopathologist with special focus on inflammatory disorders of the kidney and leads a basic research group investigating molecular mechanisms of autoimmunity. Dr. Kain has previously shown herself to be highly effective in promoting collaboration between research centers throughout the US and Europe. She has coordinated the EC funded projects INTRICATE and RELENT and was partner in the ITN HELICAL (https://helical-itn.eu/) designed to prepare the next generation of health informatics researchers. She is also partner in the IMI2 project BIGPICTURE (https://www.bigpicture.eu/) that has been designed to establish a large database of pathology images to accelerate the development of artificial intelligence in medicine. In this project she leads as academic partner WP3, dedicated to data collection and management. MAXIMILIAN KOELLER Pathology Resident & PhD Student, University of Vienna LUIZA MOORE Senior Director of Clinical Diagnostics, Global Oncology Diagnostics, AstraZeneca Luiza Moore is a Senior Director in Global Oncology Diagnostics at AstraZeneca. In her current role, she works closely with multiple franchises, cross-functional partners, and global markets to coordinate delivery of diagnostic solutions. In particular, she leads efforts to maximize biomarker adoption and facilitate decentralised molecular testing and digital and computational pathology solutions in global markets. Together with Medical affairs, she also develops medical education programs to support the adoption of molecular, digital and computational pathology. Prior to this role, she was a Director of Translational Pathology in Cancer Biomarker Development/R&D/Early Oncology division of AstraZeneca.
