SCORCHED EARTH

After a summer of unprecedented heatwaves, the autumn hasn’t provided much
relief as the sting of global warming is felt everywhere from the Amazon
Rainforest to the banks of the Mississippi River.
Dolphins in drought
A severe drought in Brazil is responsible for the deaths of more than 100 river
dolphins in the Lake Tefé region of the Amazon Rainforest over the last two
weeks. Scientists believe the elevated water temperatures are to
blame—temperatures in the region have soared above 39 ℃ (102 ℉) every day in the
last week.
Salty Mississippi
The Mississippi River has received an influx of saltwater from the Gulf of
Mexico this year, roiling Louisiana’s drinking-water supply and scuttling the
area’s agricultural industries. In a typical year, the river’s currents are
strong enough to keep saltwater at bay, but drought conditions have weakened the
Mississippi’s strength over the last two years.
Victoria sizzles
Australia is a land of extreme temperatures. But things have reached a fever
pitch in Victoria, which just recorded its warmest and driest September, as
heavy winds add fuel to the perennial threat of wildfires, and the parched
ground spreads fears of flash floods.
