Is this a deepfake?

So there’s a creator called icemanfox1 on TikTok who uses Digital Combat
Simulator to make super realistic clips of fighter jets. You might call them
machinima, or link them to the use of Unity and Unreal Engine in Hollywood.
They’re not AI, but they are surely synthetic media, and it feels like only a
matter of time before game engines incorporate generative AI anyway. Where do
you think the line is? I bet we’ll be thinking about it for a long time to come.

CMA softens concerns over Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard deal.

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has provisionally concluded
that Microsoft’s proposed Activision Blizzard deal “will not result in a
substantial lessening of competition in console gaming services because the cost
to Microsoft of withholding Call of Duty from PlayStation would outweigh any
gains from taking such action.” The CMA still has concerns around the cloud
gaming market, but a key issue over Call of Duty has now been addressed.

with a devastating hack that took over his channels and replaced them with
crypto scams.

Now, in a video produced amazingly swiftly under the circumstances, Linus
explains exactly what went wrong. All it took was someone on his team opening
one dodgy email attachment to compromise his company’s accounts in seconds.

Don’t you go announcing any free insulin now!

Twitter has reduced the amount of time your account needs to have existed before
paying for Twitter Blue from 90 days to 30 days, according to a recently-updated
support page highlighted by TechCrunch.

As a reminder, Twitter introduced the cooling-off period after people took
advantage of its newly-launched paid verification feature to impersonate some of
the biggest brands on the platform (like Eli Lilly).

Scuttlebutt: Pico pulled the plug on a VR headset launch at GDC because of
TikTok.

“A new journey begins,” the Meta Quest competitor teased three days ago. “Save
the date: 22 March 2023.” But despite having one of the single biggest booths at
GDC, Pico had nothing to reveal.

An employee there tells me Pico planned to release the promising Pico 4 in the
US — but it’s waiting, because its parent company is currently getting grilled
in Washington over a better-known product: TikTok.

Neuralink’s Shivon Zilis has reportedly stepped down from the board of OpenAI.

Shivon Zilis, a director of operations at Elon Musk’s brain-computer interface
company Neuralink who also has twin children with Musk, has said she met him
through her work with OpenAI, which makes ChatGPT. Now The Information reports
Zilis has stepped down from its board of directors.

Musk left OpenAI’s board severely years ago and has recently claimed it is
training AI to be too “woke.” The Information reported previously that he is now
recruiting a team to build a rival chatbot.

NPR stops production on some of its podcasts.

NPR is in the midst of deep layoffs amid a $30 million budget shortfall, and a
number of its podcasts are getting the axe. Invisibilia, Rough
Translation, Louder Than a Riot, and Everyone and Their Mom are stopping
production, though network spokesperson Isabel Lara said that “we are exploring
ways this work can continue in other forms.”

Relativity Space successfully launched a 3D-printed rocket, but it didn’t make
it to orbit.

Last night Relativity Space was able to launch its methane-fueled, 3D-printed
Terran R rocket at 11:25PM ET (via Engadget, CNN) after being forced to scrub a
few prior attempts.

However, Terran R failed to reach orbit, as the second stage engine sputtered
out several minutes into the flight. Relativity called the launch “a huge win”
and said, “We will assess flight data and provide public updates over the coming
days.”

Glass Onion’s film grain had to be changed for streaming.

The movie’s cinematographer, Steve Yedlin, told Vulture that there are actually
two versions of the film: a grainier version for theaters and a toned down
version for Netflix.

> The grain was making the image look crummy. You could see really big
> compression blocks and swimmy stuff. There are actually different settings
> that would’ve made the grain in the theatrical version of Glass Onion look
> fine, but Netflix can’t change their settings just to make one show or movie
> look better.

Turns out, Netflix has a special system just for streaming film grain.
