MIKE HIGGINS

FOUNDER - CIRCULARWISE

"STRATEGIC INSIGHTS TO THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Mike Higgins is a circular economy strategic advisor and regular conference
speaker focussed on the commercial potential that circularity can deliver to
corporations, entrepreneurs, investors, and regional government development
agencies. Since establishing Circularwise in 2018, Mike regularly hosts
strategic workshops to establish the potential value of reusing products,
components, or repurposing waste materials. Clients include product producers,
waste / recycling processors, logistics firms and economic development agencies.

The Mckinsey organisation estimates that the global value of circular economy
(in reuse resource efficiencies) is worth $3.7 trillion per year. Likewise,
Accenture’s circular economy team forecasts that the circular economy will
contribute an additional $4.5 trillion to the global economy by 2030.
Furthermore, the EU Circularity report published in May 2019 identified that
Circular Economy operations will create 700,000 net new jobs, within this same
timeframe, across its European states. These scale efficiencies and new business
opportunities span all industrial and business sectors and is becoming a
strategic priority for executives to ensure their organisation obtain these
substantial cost savings and leverage innovative circular enabled business
models to build new competitive advantage. The industry-wide adoption of
circularity practices is moving beyond its initial innovation stage. Industry
thought leaders have already leveraged circularity practices to transform
circular generation product developments, manufacturing systems, and logistics
operations to gain major supply-chain efficiencies. This shift to reuse based
operations, effectively decouples future growth risk dependency on sourcing only
‘virgin’ supply-chain materials extracted from rapidly diminishing natural
resources. Taking a strategic perspective, we discuss ‘why’ industry needs to
rapidly transform from wasteful linear economy conventions.

happens when environmental issues outside of our control impact the supply chain
and how do we recover? Only this week the press reported that the Coronavirus
has impacted the Land Rover supply chain to such a degree, that they are having
to ship parts in suitcases to keep the production line running and they now only
have a couple of weeks worth of parts remaining. JCB may have to stop production

1999 and continued achieving excellence in teaching and research. He led dynamic
general equilibrium modelling tasks of the energy sector under the Supergen
research project from 2005-2007

Capital accumulation generates higher growth rates of output across sectors but
these raise levels of air, water and land pollutions as their by-products.
Energy and environment taxes in consumption and production of traditional
sources of energy aimed at abating pollution distort the labour leisure choices
by individuals, use of inputs by firms and lead to the unintended distribution
of income and welfare across households. It is better to allocate more resources
on energy saving technologies including renewables or wind-powers, that could
significantly reduce the pollution while maintaining the efficient process of
growth with right signals of relative prices. These strategies could be formed
after careful analyses of alternative scenaries from a dynamic general
equilibrium model of the economy concerned.

DERMOT BRABAZON

FULL PROFESSOR - ADVANCED PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH CENTRE AT DCU

"ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING - A GAME CHANGER FOR SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURING?"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Dermot Brabazon is Director of the Advanced Processing Technology Research
Centre at DCU; was co-founder in 2017 and is deputy Director of the I-Form,
Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre; and established in 2019 and is Director

Over the last decade in particular, improvements in Additive Manufactured (AM,
also called 3D printing) technologies have resulted in increased potential to
directly print in one step functional components. In order to achieve this in
produced parts, a number of important requirements have to be meet such as a
high level dimensional accuracy, the availability of an improved range of
functional materials, and a supply chain and cost model which is competitive
with traditional manufacturing. In recent years, great strides have been made in
these areas which enable a new range of applications to avail of AM
technologies. The dimensional, physical and chemical integrity of polymer and
metal printed parts have improved greatly allowing a broader range of end
applications. There are now over 100 AM equipment suppliers which is mirrored by
the increase in the materials supplied for these machines. Production speeds and
quality control also continue to improve. The AM process has the ability to
produce complex components with integrated functionality requiring less material
and fewer production assembly steps. The raw materials for AM can be recycled,
particularly for metal AM. The process can also be used to process parts in
remote locations, with reduced need for transportation costs. In this talk, an
overview of these developments and in particular their implications for
sustainable manufacturing will be presented.

MICHAEL BURROWS

SENIOR ADVISER INDUSTRY 4.0 - RS COMPONENTS

"UNDERSTANDING THE JURNEY TOWARD IIOT/INDUSTRY 4.0"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Mike was formally Managing Director of Monition from 2002 -2019. With over 35
years’ experience at the forefront of Reliability and Asset Management
development, Mike has steered Monition to become a leading independent Condition
Monitoring, Plant Reliability & Process Improvement Company, Pre acquisition by
Electrocomponents in February 2019..

What’s the right approach towards an IIoT strategy? An Organisational / People
centred approach to I4.0 is needed. The next industrial revolution has arrived.
Enabling technologies are ready but why has the uptake been slow? Cultural
change is needed from top to bottom enabled by group level next generation cross
discipline I4.0 standards and practices. Ten years ago operators would argue
that they don’t have any data. Increasingly operators have the data but now they
wrestle with what to do with it. In most cases even if improved maintenance
decision making was possible many operators don’t have the confidence or the
resources to make a difference. Step changes are required to invest in the IIoT.
Only then will longer term operational performance improvements be achieved

Why should a customer buy from you? What are you doing differently than your
competitors to keep the customer? Or are they just buying from you for
convenience but not for the experience? Better change this as someone else could
start supplying what you have or do. On average every year businesses lose 20%
of the customer base. The greatest reason for this is the lack of the customer
experience and where the staff couldn’t be bothered serving the customers in a
proper manner.

advanced of e-procurement technologies, the investment of procurement solution
providers to develop their knowledge, and companies hunting for competitive
advantages, the popularity of procurement outsourcing implementation by using
e-procurement technologies have increased. However, these practices should
always been based on collaboration and partnership to avoid any challenge, even

JING FARRELLY

GENERAL MANAGER - ZATINO LIMITED

"BRINGING FOREIGN INVESTMENT AND TALENTS TO NORTHERN IRELAND POST BREXIT"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

I founded a wealth management company on 2015; we provide consultancy service to
wealthy non-EEA individuals and their families to relocate to Ireland in the
past few years. The type of investments that we have achieved and on-going
including: Nursing homes, social housings, food factories, climate change
related companies, pharmaceutical companies, hotels and whiskey distilleries.

The UK Startup and Innovator visa categories are for non-EEA nationals wishing
to set up a business in the UK. To qualify for a visa in either category,
applicants must first obtain an endorsement from an approved endorsing body. All
applications will be assessed for Innovation, Viability and Scalability. A lot
of foreign entrepreneurs are having either good business ideas or experience in
certain industry, but hesitate to start a business in a foreign territory. After
Brexit, a lot of them will look at Northern Ireland as great opportunities. For
example, in the pharmaceutical industry, we have a lot of Chinese professionals
whom from either medical or pharmaceutical background, they are interested in
both investing or take part of R&D of new drugs.

LUKE FEENEY

COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR - DATACHEMIST

"INVENTORY MANAGEMENT KNOWLEDGE GRAPH"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Luke Feeney is the Commercial Director at DataChemist, a Dublin based startup.
DataChemist wants to empower enterprises with remarkable new insights from

Foreign Ministry for a number of years. He served in Ireland’s Permanent Mission
to the UN in New York and the Embassies in South Africa and Greece. He was
Ireland’s acting Ambassador to Greece for 2016 and 2017. Luke was the Head of
the Government of Ireland’s Brexit Communications Team and the Government Brexit
Spokesperson from 2017 to 2018.

Predictive analytics in inventory management has not been the traditional domain
of knowledge graphs and semantics; however, it is a surprisingly natural fit.
This talk will review knowledge graphs in the supply chain and look into the
details of implementation. In our central case, using a semantic model, we build
a ‘digital twin’ of a complex inventory management supply chain. Data from
heterogeneous sources - including warehouse management systems, point of sale
systems and weather data – are then imported into the knowledge graph. Using the
graph we carry out analytics, optimization, scheduling and Monte Carlo
simulations. A complex set of operations built around the central supply chain
knowledge graph. The net result is a predictive analytic system that delivers
real value to the enterprise (up to a 50% reduction in inventory). The knowledge
graph can be extended to include product information and other central
commercial data use cases. This presentation will draw on the production
delivery of TerminusDB to the largest retailer in Ireland.

BILL MCEWAN

LECTURER IN ENGINEERING - BELFAST METROPOLITAN COLLEGE

"THE PRACTICAL, AND REALISTIC, USE OF FDM FOR MANUFACTURING COMPETITIVE
PRODUCTS"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Dr Bill McEwan has been a lecturer in engineering at Belfast Metropolitan
College for the past 7 years. As part of the College's broader strategy to
promote and support the adoption of emerging technologies in industry, Bill has
worked closely with a number of engineering enterprises to help them develop
novel manufacturing strategies and techniques. The specific focus has been on
the adoption of FDM (FFF) printing as a means of producing parts which offer
expected and appropriate performance while simultaneously providing reduced
cost, lower supply chain dependency, and greater diversification of product
base.

The 3D printing of polymer parts has long been viewed as fit only for either
domestic entertainment or for exotic prototyping. Long print times, limited
materials, and unpredictable material properties are often cited as the key
reasons for the wholesale rejection of the technology as a viable manufacturing
alternative to more traditional techniques and materials. Many companies,
particularly SMEs, who are not producing components in the thousands or even
hundreds often reject injection moulding as a manufacturing solution due to the
inflated cost of low part numbers. In such cases, the adoption of metal parts,
cheaper but massively over specified, is a common though less than optimal
solution. But what if the lead times for the parts you need was not dependant on
outside agencies? What if an additive manufacturing solution, and hence limited
material waste, could produce savings? What if the capability to reproduce
heritage parts at a moment's notice was a significant advantage? Through an
illustrated case study, this presentation seeks to suggest that there are
multiple advantages to FDM that can indeed result in improved, and importantly,
practicable, products.

TIM MCGLOUGHLIN

JOHN MCLAUGHLIN.

DIRECTOR - DE-SKILL BUSINESS SOLUTIONS

"STRUGGLING TO FIND THE RIGHT SYSTEMS FOR YOUR MANUFACTURING COMPANY"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

John previously acted as Managing Director and Group board member of a number
companies across Northern Ireland and Czech Republic, covering R&D,
manufacturing and engineering. With this extensive experience, John recognised
the needs for strong systems to facilitate and accelerate growth and therefore
founded De-Skill business solutions. We now assist companies select and
implement the ‘best’ systems to suit their business. We drive the principles
-Process, Lean and then systems. Our approach de-risks the need for high capital
‘ERP’ systems and we actively support the change process in making a real
difference to your business.

Manufacturing is particularly difficult as the focus today is high
customisation, short lead-times and tight margins. ERP sounds great on paper,
unfortunately it was designed for a different ERA. We will show how to pull
sales orders from Sage, Epicor, QuickBooks, Spreadsheets etc.. straight to live
production schedules. Locate any production job in seconds. During this session
we will look at why 75% of all ERP projects fail (Gartner) and how companies can
de-risk by futureproofing their systems strategy through a shared data model. We
will discuss case studies and how it has turned businesses around. Getting the
right processes in place -adding value, driving ‘waste’ out of the ‘order to
cash’ -Lean and supporting with the ‘right information’ -systems unleashes new
energy into any business. Too many business are confused with the promises of
new systems. Unless companies embrace processes and systems together they will
likely join the 75% - ‘A bad process will beat any good system’ Come and
understand the alternatives to full ERP systems.

PAUL MCMAHON

SOLICITOR, TAX ADVISOR, LEGAL PUBLISHER - MCMAHON LEGAL / IRISH LEGAL GUIDE

"BREXIT AND THE NORTHERN IRELAND PROTOCOL"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Paul McMahon is solicitor and tax adviser with extensive experience in Ireland
and England. He advises extensively on all Brexit issues, including customs,
trade and legal issues. He has published Brexit (An Irish Guide)
(brexitlegal.ie) and Brexit Information (brexitlegalguide.co.uk), each with over
1,000 articles on all aspects of Brexit.

Paul McMahon takes a look across the range of issues that arise under the
Northern Ireland Protocol. The EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement sketches out broad
principles, to which detailed effect has not yet been given. The extent of the
controls that might apply to GB to NI trade and NI to GB trade is not yet clear.
The EU-UK Joint Committee is to work in 2020 to fill in the gaps. There have
been some UK Government impact documents that suggest various possibilities. It
is relatively clear that Northern Ireland businesses may have some significant
advantages relative to Republic of Ireland businesses in respect of GB trade,
and in respect of EU trade, relative to GB businesses. Paul will look at the
issues which may create significant new opportunities for Northern Ireland
businesses The NI protocol covers trade with the EU/Republic of Ireland in
goods, but not in services. A comprehensive agreement on services appears
unlikely in 2020 so that there may be a hard Brexit for cross-border services.
Paul will also look at the impact of Brexit in the area of cross-border services
with the Republic of Ireland and the EU. The common travel area and traditions
of close legislative alignment and cooperation are likely to mitigate the
position.

TONY OWENS

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Tony Owens is MD of Shibumi Consulting based in Wicklow and is an experienced
R&D engineering consultant. Past assignments included: keeping beer fresh;
de-smogging diesel engines, designing optics for space telescopes; novel medical
devices; engineering inflatable sock, preventing portable gas appiances from
exploding, and more.

Putting in place reliable 3D printing for a business, for engineering materials,
without having to spend months becoming a printing expert is a very real
challenge. Much of the printing industry doesn’t want to talk about this, but
I’d like to offer some advice about how to minimise the wasted time getting up
to speed. After extensive research and planning, two years ago my design firm
invested in a large industrial Fused Filament printer. The project did not go
remotely as planned! We learned a great deal about the 3D printing industry, the
competing technologies, and about how to dissect hype from reality. This may be
of interest to SME’s, architectural and engineering design consultants who need
to produce large prototypes, models and components in ‘real’ engineering
materials, but lack the budget to be Stratasys and EOS customers. Our
experiences led to our decision to begin developing a machine about the size of
a large fridge which 3D prints, laser engraves and performs light milling with
industrial levels of reliability, but with a space and noise footprint suitable
for an office environment. We will summarise this project too.
