SEA RESEARCH FROM CLIMATE TO BIODIVERSITY

NIOZ, the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, is the national
oceanographic institute and the Netherlands’ centre of expertise for ocean, sea
and coast. We advance fundamental understanding of marine systems, the way they
change, the role they play in climate and biodiversity, and how they may provide
sustainable solutions to society in the future.

FEATURED NEWS

CO2 puts heavier stamp on temperature than thought

A doubling of the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere could cause an increase in the
average temperature on earth from 7 to even a maximum of 14 degrees. That is a
much larger rise than the 2.3 to 4.5 degrees that the UN climate panel IPCC
estimated so far.

NIOZ@Sea: follow our current research expedition

The RV Pelagia’s “Weeds of Change” research expedition has just left port in
Guadeloupe, France. The cruise sets sail to the “Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt”,
to study aspects of the causes and fate of this massive algal bloom.

Fungus breaks down ocean plastic

A fungus living in the sea can break down the plastic polyethylene, provided it
has first been exposed to UV radiation from sunlight. Researchers from, among
others, NIOZ published their results in the scientific journal Science of the
Total Environment.

SCIENTIFIC DEPARTMENTS

Our science is conducted in four scientific departments;. Three of them are area
oriented: estuaries and delta areas, coastal seas and open oceans. Marine
Microbiology and Biogeochemistry conducts science in all three area types.
