Two sisters, both below five years of age, died within a span of four days in a
‘mysterious illness’ in Rajshahi.

The deceased are Muftaul Mashiya, 4, and Muntaha Marisha, 2, daughters of Manjur
Rahman, a mathematics teacher at Rajshahi Cadet College, and Poly Khatun.

Following the death of the two children, Manjur Rahman and wife Poly Khatun have
been kept in isolation at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on Saturday
afternoon.

Poly Khatun said that they live in the Rajshahi Cadet College staff quarters at
Sarda of Charghat upazila in the district.

She said that their maid gave the sisters unwashed plums (Indian jujube, boroi)
plucked from a tree on the quarter premises in the morning of February 13.

‘Next morning, Marisha developed a fever and was drinking water repeatedly,’
said the mother. When the child started vomiting shortly after noon, they
started for Christian Mission Hospital in Rajshahi with her but she died on the
way.

The mother said that Mashiya showed similar symptoms on Friday morning and they
admitted her to Charghat Upazila Health Complex and then took her to Christian
Mission Hospital.

As Mashiya also started getting dark spots all over her body like her sister on
Friday night, doctors referred her to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where
she passed away at its Intensive Care Unit on Saturday afternoon, the
agony-stricken mother said.

Hospital director brigadier general FM Shamim Ahammad said that they kept the
couple in isolation at the hospital, suspecting that the deceased sisters might
have died from Nipah virus infection.

He said that samples collected from the deceased sisters, however, tested
negative for Nipah virus infection in both ELISA and PCR tests.

‘The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research plans to initiate
further testing to detect the presence of any other causative agents viral or
bacterial,’ he added.

Abu Hena Mustafa Kamal, in-charge of the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital,
said that the mother, Poly Katun, also developed fever on Sunday and that they
would keep the couple under observation for Sunday night.

‘We will release them if she has no fever on Monday,’ he added.

Meanwhile, an expert medical team from the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease
Control and Research in Dhaka would reach Rajshahi on Monday to investigate the
death of the two sisters, said institute professor Tahmina Shirin.
