LAKE LURE, N.C. — A lone pontoon boat glided slowly Monday across the muddy,
debris-choked surface of this once-bustling lake.

The silence and solitude felt eerie in a place lined with vacation homes, in a
town typically brimming with retirees and tourists who flock to peep leaves or
walk along the famous Flowering Bridge. Many come to climb to an outcropping on
the mountains above and gaze over one of the nation’s most magnificent views,
before descending to the cafes and shops below in Chimney Rock.
