FAIR TRADE & ETHICAL CLOTHING BRANDS

On April 24, 2013, the Rana Plaza tragedy killed over 1,100 garment workers in
Bangladesh and wounded over 2,200 more. The incident left consumers all over the
world questioning who makes the clothes we wear every day and in what kind of
conditions? Documentaries like ’The True Cost’ shine a light on how the fast
fashion industry depletes the earth’s resources and leverages slave labor to
pass on a "cheap" cost to the end consumer.

> “Who makes the clothing we wear every day and in what conditions?”

As consumers, we’ve become increasingly conscious about our purchases,
channeling the power of our vocalized objections to make a positive difference
for the people involved in the making of our clothes and goods.

Now, eight years after the Rana Plaza tragedy, dozens of slow fashion brands
have emerged that are dedicated to ethical and sustainable practices. The 35
companies we have listed below are some of our favorite ethical alternatives to
fast fashion companies. Each one has made it a central part of its mission to
approach fashion in an ethical and transparent way that considers both people
and the planet.

If you're making the shift to a completely ethical wardrobe, check out our
guides to responsibly made shoes, sustainable purses, and fair trade jewelry. If
you live in the UK, here are fair trade fashion brands in the UK. Are you
looking for secondhand and vintage instead? Check out our guide to affordable
places to shop secondhand clothing!

Great list! What about Nightswim? An brand based in LA whose super
nature-centric and uses Cupro fabrics to make on-demand production basically
custom-made pieces.

Excellent list overall. Unfortunately, Quince sounds good to be true and I did a
bit of digging and I think it might be. They make a lot of vague claims about
sustainability but don't back them up with much transparent data, and the
"ethics" of direct-from-factory shipping are murky at best. Shop carefully!

I prefer buying made-to-order linen dresses from ethical brands like
notperfectlinen.com or manufacturedelin.com etc.

Ethic Attire is an alternative clothing brand who’s emphasis is artist profit
shares, fair wages and intellectual property rights. While it isn’t high
fashion, worth a mention for those looking to support a small business that
supports artists, their local community.

I’m a fan of Kotn’s educational initiatives and the softness of their products.
But while Kotn can be called ethical, it cannot be classified as sustainable. I
believe their cotton is still not organic? Regular cotton, although it adds to a
growing economy, does not provide a safe environment for its farmers. The water
usage alone is extremely demanding for a country that suffers from water
shortage.

I love this article and I just wanted to keep us all informed so that we weigh
our options more accurately.

Hi Laura! Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment. Kotn's in the process of
working with farmers to pursue organic certifications and so far, the cotton
used is thoughtfully sourced and verified from the Better Cotton Initiative
(abiding by sustainable standards!). While not certified organic quite yet, we
hope to see that change too in the near future. x - The Good Trade Team

Hello!
For people in Europe; I always buy my clothes from TwoThirds. It is a super
sustainable brand from Portugal. Everything is designed and crafted in Portugal
and Spain.
I really love it. They also have a yoga line!

Great article. Please keep updating the list. We cannot maintain our quality of
life as human beings, the diversity of life on Earth, or Earth's ecosystems

Love this read, keep updating the list and share more sustainable choices with
us, I am a huge fan of sustainable clothing! Recently, I bought a yoga legging
and a sustainable face mask from this cool brand called Lumière Paris
(www.lumiere-paris.com), I really like their mission towards environmental
causes. We need more sustainable brands like this and we as consumers should
stay away from fast fashion and support these type of brands that makes
sustainable products and do good for the World.

This is a great list, but there aren’t any brands that sell talls. As a 6 ft
tall woman, sustainable clothing options are near nonexistent.

Hi Jessica! We recommend checking out secondhand through Poshmark or ThredUp for
existing apparel and for brands offering tall/custom sizing options, we love
Sotela (you can choose your own inseam!), Only Child, Taylor Tall (specifically
for tall women), and Warp + Weft. xx - The Good Trade Team

Hi Jaina! We don't have a particular brand source for that image, but we
recommend checking out Etsy or vintage platforms for something like that knit
halter! You could also check out stockists like Lisa Says Gah who we've seen
carry similar styles from women designers. xx - The Good Trade Team

Great list! I would love to add the brand Roni Helou that is a socially
conscious ready to wear brand that supports the local economies and artisans by
producing and sourcing everything locally. The brand also only uses dead-stock
fabric that is vintage unsold material that would otherwise be thrown into
landfills. Check it out at www.ronihelou.com

Can someone tell me which is better for the environment. A garment made of 75%
tencel & 25% polyester (not recycled), or one made of 100% conventional cotton?
Really curious!

Preview Post Reply

julia 10 months ago Pending Awaiting Moderation · 0 Likes

I go with natural fibers as much as possible! I cannot stand polyester but it's
OK in small percentage for outerwear like sweaters, jackets and pants for warmer
season. Tencel is of natural origin (bamboo or other plant by product) according
to www.tencel.com. I have tencel blends and it feels in between silk and linen
which is great for summer, though I still love 100% natural because fibers
because they are more breathable, healthier for the skin, softer and more
luxurious.

Meagan A year ago Pending Awaiting Moderation · 0 Likes

Sarah makes solid comments from a manufacturing perspective. From an additional
perspective, polyester is not the best for your body. Synthetic fabrics
exacerbate joint issues and aches and pains, because these fabrics do not allow
for transfer of energy and grounding. It is also not very breathable and traps
in sweat and other toxins trying to come out. Go with cotton (organic and
recycled if you can find it) when you can.

Preview Post Reply

Sarah A year ago Pending Awaiting Moderation · 0 Likes

It depends... Tencel is pretty good but a Tencel poly blend would be hard to
recycle. Conventionally produced cotton uses more water for sure. But once you
have the textile fibres there’s a whole manufacturing chain with impact on
people and the environment all the way along it.

A great list! My favorites are SKYE shop-skye.com and Mijeong Park
mijeongpark.com. They are both sustainable, ethical and their designs are
minimal, classy and elegant. Their pieces are also very reasonably priced
considering their unique designs and excellent quality.

So happy to find this list! Will definitely be more conscious of the brands'
philosophies and how they are giving back the society.

Also, check out moiaccessories.com, they are a Canadian small jewelry store that
donates their partial profit to World Vision Canada. It seems rare to me that
such a small business decides to go ethical.

specific purpose other than just fighting fast fashion. You can see their site

ocean. Its taking the brunt of the effects of climate change to this point.

Always great to see such articles which increase awareness of ethical clothing
brands. My only gripe is that there is very little choice when it comes to men's
fashion. For a unisex and more homouristic range of eco friendly garments try
crowear.uk

Interesting list, will definitely do more research on all the above! However, I
would reconsider editing the "Based in" category as it could mislead readers to
believe the company produces their garments in that country. For example, Levi's
is US based despite outsourcing and making their products in China. HQ vs where
the products are actually made can overshadow potentially problematic raw
materials and/or manufacturing practices.

I'd request that you change the sizing information for Sotela because their
sizing is 0-30 but they aren't a traditional size, a traditional size 4-6 would
wear a 1 or a 2 in Sotela, it's far more size inclusive than saying 0-30 makes
it seem!

Hi Em!

Thank you for pointing that out! Sotela offers sizes 0-10, which converts to
0-30 in the US size range, but we've added a link to their size guide for
further explanation xx
