Roxie Hart, the murderer awaiting trial in the famed Broadway musical Chicago,
has been played by everyone from Liza Minnelli to a Spice Girl and even a few
Real Housewives.

But for the first time in the play-turned-musical's nearly 100-year history,
producers cast Angelica Ross, a Black transgender woman, as the femme fatale.
She razzle-dazzled audiences by putting her own spin on the role for an
eight-week limited run in 2022.

Ross, best known for starring in the Emmy-winning drama Pose, told The
Washington Post that when she found out about the opportunity, she vowed to
Black trans women everywhere to “meet the moment.” But it’s only one way the
actress is helping others.

With her can-do attitude, she’s started her own record label and taught herself
coding, eventually creating her own creative design company to teach other trans
people about tech and career skills.

A Trans Movement
Ross’s Broadway debut took place almost a year following the Trans March on
Broadway. Actress and advocate Sis organized the march to show that trans
people, especially Black and brown trans people, are already in the theater and
deserve a seat at the table. Roughly 200 protestors marched from Central Park to
Shubert Alley, the center of the New York theater district.

Peppermint, a transgender theater actress and RuPaul’s Drag Race star, was on
hand to speak at the protest. She said, “When I look out, I see so many
beautiful faces. Of the trans faces I see, I see actors, performers, speakers,
writers, and creators. And I don’t see a single ‘gimmick.’ What I see are
opportunities, and it’s time that they—they who are in the business of
Broadway—know it.”

Watch: Having never appeared on Broadway before, why did Ross want to take on
the iconic role of Roxie? In this video by Playbill, she explains why she took
the role and what she hopes audience members get out of seeing her performance.

In another example of creatives working to make Broadway more inclusive, Arthur
Miller’s Death of a Salesman, a two-act tragedy set in late-1940s Brooklyn, was
reinvented in 2022. In the new version, Willy Loman, the washed-up traveling
salesman who is disillusioned by the American dream, and his dysfunctional
family are shown from the perspective of a Black family in a white world.

Consider This: Justin David Sullivan, a transgender, nonbinary singer and actor
who stars in the hit Broadway musical & Juliet, withdrew from consideration for
a Tony Award after being told they would have to choose between one of the two
gendered categories. The prior year, Asia Kate Dillon, a nonbinary performer who
had a role in MacBeth, also asked not to be considered.
