Most abstractors did not include the names of individuals signing or witnessing the application for pension, and those names can sometimes be very revealing. You can obtain an entire military record, including any land warrants, from the National Archives and Records Administration, using the required Form 80. Copies of this form can be obtained by Email. Be sure to include in your email the number of copies you want and, most importantly, your name and address. You will receive the form(s) in about 10 - 12 days. Once you have submitted the form and they have searched their records, you will receive a letter stating what they have found, along with a request for payment if you desire copies of the record. This is usually $10.00. One way to speed up the process is to go ahead and include a credit card number in your original request (there is an area on the Form 80 for this information). This knocks many weeks off of the waiting period, and, of course, wont be used if no records are found. Military records can also be obtained on microfilm from the LDS Family History Centers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- William, or William BARTLETT, S12964, VA line, appl 26 Sep 1832 Clarke Cty KY aged 77, b 17 Jan 1755 in Frederick Cty VA & had ent in Loudon Cty VA, sols father William BERKLEY or BARTLETT d in Loudon Cty VA & Sols mother d prior to 1832, sol refers to his bros but none are named in the file. William (X) BERKLEY alias William BARTLETT, a resident of said county, aged 77 on 7 or 17 January last, declares he enlisted in Loudoun Co., Virginia, in February 1777 with Captain Charles Porterfield in the 11th Regiment of Virginia troops of Colonel Daniel MORGAN, and was discharged in Loudoun Co. Virginia, after or about October 1781. He marched to Winchester, Virginia, in March 1777 where the troops were rendezvoused and about 25 March were marched to Philadelphia and there inoculated for the small pox. They marched to Bon Brook where he was attached to Capt. Gabriel LONGs company of Morgans rifle regiment. LONG had resided in Culpeper County. He was in battle in New York when General BURGOYNE was taken and General GATES commanded the American troops. In that battle the lieutenant of his company, ____ HARRISON of Culpepper County, was killed. James WRIGHT of Fauquier County was later captain of the company in place of LONG and under WRIGHT they marched to Charleston, South Carolinia. Major POSEY commanded the regiment after MORGANs promotion to General. He was in Charleston during the seige, was wounded and was taken prisoner for about fourteen months. He was a Monmouth while the battle there was going on but MORGANs regiment was not engaged. He was in a battle in the Gennessee country with the British and Indians under General SULLIVAN. He was born 7 or 17 January 1755 in Frederick Co., Virginia. His father William BERKLEY died in Loudoun County. Applicant could never write and was an indifferent reader. His name on the roll of soldiers may be written BARTLETT as his fathers name and that of his descendants in the male line is sometimes pronounced BARTLETT, sometimes BERKLEY and sometimes BARCLAY and pronounced sometimes in one way and sometimes in the other. Some of his brothers write their names BARTLETT and others write their name BERKLEY. William BERKLEY alias BARTLETT of Clark Co., Kentucky, private in the company of Captain PORTERFIELD in the regiment of Colonel MORGAN in the Virginia line for two years, was placed on the Kentucky pension roll at $80 per annum under the act of 1832. Certificate 7648 was issued 11 May 1833. [Dorman] [Dormans abstract contributed by Carol A. Selander.] William BARTLETT, alias William BERKLEY, is listed in the 1835 Pension Ceusus, age 79 (in 1835), showing service as a Private, Virginia Line. His pension started May 11, 1833 with an annual allowance of $80.00, and total received $240.00. ~~~~~~~ Endnotes 1. William Berkley/Bartletts Will, dated Jul 4, 1833, Clark Co., KY [WB 3:70] names his children: Matilda, Silas, Melesa, Oliver, Hiram, Louisa and Nancy. 2. One Hiram Bartlett married Nancy Priest Sep 8, 1818, Montgomery Co., KY. Is he the son of William Berkley/Bartlett? (Montgomery formed from Clark Co. 1796) 3. What happened to Silas? Is he the same Silas that md. Barbara McDaniel 1837 Mason Co., KY? Some researchers show Silas (w/Barbara) was the son of Ebenezer Bartlett of Nicholas Co., KY (d. 1843 Hancock Co., IL), but he is not named in Ebenezers will and to date Ive found no other records indicating he was Ebenezers son. 1850 Census records show Silas (w/Barbara), age 30, (b. ca 1820). Ebenezer Bartlett had a son, b. Mar., 1818 and a daughter b. Nov, 1820. It's possible, but seems unlikely there was a son born in between. Barbara McDaniel BARTLETT died 1902 in Bath Co., KY (formed from Montgomery Co. 1811). 4. Other researchers show Silas was the son of Samuel Bartlett of Nicholas Co. Again, Ive found no documents to prove that. If he was not the son of Ebenezer or Samuel, perhaps Silas (w/Barbara) is Williams son, Silas. Does anyone have any primary source proof of Silas parents? Your ideas would be appreciated. Sandra G.
