Employee or independent contractor? What the recent DOL Rules mean for employers

For the past several years, U.S. federal and state agencies have been ramping up
their efforts to root out employees who have been misclassified as independent
contractors. The distinction is important, because independent contractors
generally aren’t protected by such things as discrimination laws, workers’
compensation, and wage and hour requirements. On March 11, 2024, the Department
of Labor (DOL) raised the stakes by issuing new rules that make it more
difficult to be an independent contractor.
