PRE-HARVEST EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE

KATIE LANGEL SPADE – FARM & RANCH UNDERWRITING DIRECTOR

The summer months give farmers a chance to recover from the busy spring planting
season and prepare for their hectic, and hopefully bountiful, fall harvest. Part
of regular preparations should include making sure equipment is properly
maintained and ready to be employed for harvest. Items like combines, grain
carts and harvest trucks are a big part of this restless season and are subject
to controllable losses if not properly managed. If one of these items is lost to
a fire or otherwise breaks down during the farmer’s busiest season it can have
costly consequences to a farm operation. Completing the following summer
maintenance can help give farmers a productive fall season.
 * Having a preventative maintenance plan in place for the operation and abiding
   by the manufacturer’s service schedule.
 * Fluid analysis - including engine coolants and lubricants, air conditioning
   refrigerant, hydraulic and driveline fluids.
 * Investigate hot running engines or bearings.
 * Check equipment tire pressure.
 * Maintain proper fire extinguishers and locate the nearest water source in
   case of a fire.
 * Clean out dust and debris, such as husks and pods, from the machinery.
 * Communicate equipment safety and a response plan to all operators or
   employees.

may be combined into one specific time period provided that no time period
extends beyond the expiration date of the policy.

Non-Depreciation of Partial Losses - Farm Machinery - FR37
When this endorsement is attached the loss settlement provision for farm

apply. Any irrigation system scheduled under Coverage F is also included.

Replacement Cost Farm Machinery - FR24
The loss settlement provision for items of farm machinery scheduled for this

coverage is needed for each item of machinery. The item of farm machinery

BACKDATED POLICY CHANGES

In recent months we’ve had several instances where our agreement to backdate a
policy change request has resulted in a corresponding loss. Due to this recent
increase in unusual activity please be advised of the following changes in our
procedures.

We will allow change requests to be backdated within your Agent Binding
Authority.
 * Legacy Changes - 30 day binding authority
 * Connect Changes - 7 day binding authority

In instances where there are suspicious timings with change requests and
subsequent losses, these will be turned over to the State Auto CARE Special
Investigations Unit and we will pursue fraud or agent E&O as needed.
