PRE-HARVEST EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE KATIE LANGEL SPADE – FARM & RANCH UNDERWRITING DIRECTOR The summer months give farmers a chance to recover from the busy spring planting season and prepare for their hectic, and hopefully bountiful, fall harvest. Part of regular preparations should include making sure equipment is properly maintained and ready to be employed for harvest. Items like combines, grain carts and harvest trucks are a big part of this restless season and are subject to controllable losses if not properly managed. If one of these items is lost to a fire or otherwise breaks down during the farmer’s busiest season it can have costly consequences to a farm operation. Completing the following summer maintenance can help give farmers a productive fall season. * Having a preventative maintenance plan in place for the operation and abiding by the manufacturer’s service schedule. * Fluid analysis - including engine coolants and lubricants, air conditioning refrigerant, hydraulic and driveline fluids. * Investigate hot running engines or bearings. * Check equipment tire pressure. * Maintain proper fire extinguishers and locate the nearest water source in case of a fire. * Clean out dust and debris, such as husks and pods, from the machinery. * Communicate equipment safety and a response plan to all operators or employees. We offer Connect Farm & Ranch coverages that can be beneficial to your insured’s livelihood in a worst case scenario.
