African Development Bank’s Climate Resilience Program Gets $151 Million Boost
from the Green Climate Fund Up to 4.6 million people across Djibouti, Somalia,
Kenya, Ethiopia and South Sudan will benefit from the new funding that comprises
a $90.7 million grant and a $60.3 million loan.  The financing will support
community-driven and gender-balanced resilience solutions. These include
sustainable land management practices, access to climate-smart technologies and
best practices, renewable energy, capacity-building for cooperatives,
#agribusiness and micro, small and medium enterprises, credit and climate
services, early warning, and index insurance.  “These resources will further
help consolidate the #FeedAfrica Strategy and complement the Country Food and
Agriculture Delivery Compacts presented at the Dakar 2 Feed Africa: Food
Sovereignty and Resilience Summit. This will support the reduction of poverty
and food insecurity while contributing to accelerated sustainable economic
growth in the region,” said Dr. Martin Fregene, the Bank’s Director for
Agriculture and Agro-Industry.  Discover more about this impactful initiative:

🌍💼 Financial Inclusion: Key to Climate Adaptation in Africa Africa faces
60-80% of global climate impacts, including severe droughts and floods,
despite contributing only 3.8% of global emissions. Financial inclusion can
help vulnerable communities adapt by: ✅ Providing Climate-Smart Financing:
Supporting smallholder farmers, who produce 80% of Africa’s food, with tools
like drought-resistant seeds and irrigation systems. ✅ Strengthening Risk
Management: Weather-indexed insurance helps mitigate the $520M annual climate
damage in sub-Saharan Africa. ✅ Driving Green Transitions: Facilitating
access to renewable energy for the 43% of Africans without electricity. ✅
Empowering Marginalized Groups: Ensuring women, who make up 50% of the
agricultural workforce, access tailored financial services. 💸 Each $1
invested in disaster prevention saves $4 in recovery costs. By expanding
access to financial services, Africa can build resilience, promote
sustainable practices, and drive economic stability. #ClimateResilience

The Great Green Wall of Africa: A Beacon of Hope for a Sustainable Future In
2007, the African Union launched an ambitious initiative to combat
desertification, climate change, and poverty in the Sahel region. The Great
Green Wall of Africa, conceived by former Nigerian President Olusegun
Obasanjo, aims to create a 7,000-mile belt of trees and vegetation across 11
countries, from Senegal to Djibouti. The project began in 2010, with the
support of the African Union, the United Nations, and various international
organizations. The participating countries, including Burkina Faso, Chad,
Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, and
Sudan, have committed to restoring 100 million hectares of degraded land by
2030. The project is funded by a combination of government contributions,
international aid, and private investment. The African Development Bank, the
World Bank, and the European Union are among the major donors. But who is
doing the actual planting of trees? Local communities are at the forefront of
this effort. Smallholder farmers, pastoralists, and rural communities are
working together to plant and care for the trees, using traditional knowledge
and innovative techniques. Women's groups, in particular, are playing a vital
role in the project, as they are often responsible for collecting and
planting the seeds. The benefits for local communities are already being
felt. The Great Green Wall has created jobs, improved livelihoods, and
enhanced food security. In Niger, for example, farmers have seen their
incomes increase by 20% due to the project. Progress has been impressive,
with over 18 million hectares of land restored so far. In Senegal, a
50-kilometer belt of trees has been planted, while in Ethiopia, over 2
billion seedlings have been distributed to farmers. Projects like the Great
Green Wall demonstrate the power of collective action in addressing global
challenges. Similar initiatives, such as the Green Belt Movement in Kenya and
the Trillion Tree Campaign globally, show that we can make a difference when
we work together. As we face the pressing issues of climate change,
desertification, and sustainable development, the Great Green Wall of Africa
serves as a beacon of hope. Let us continue to support and learn from this
incredible initiative. Follow Takunda Mhazo for more insights and stories on
engineering, construction, energy, and the environment. Together, we can
   build a more sustainable future. #GreatGreenWall #Sustainability #Africa

Africa's Infrastructure: Challenges & Opportunities The statistics reveal
untapped potential: • 40% have access to electricity • 34% have improved
sanitation • 65% have access to clean water • Only 5% of agriculture is
irrigated Yet, there is reason for optimism: mobile phone adoption is
surging, outpacing global growth rates. These gaps represent more than
challenges—they are opportunities for transformative investments. Join us at
the Global Africa Forum on 25 September 2025, in New York, USA, as we explore
how to bridge these divides and unlock Africa's vast potential.

🇹🇿The CCDR for Tanzania presents a comprehensive roadmap for integrating
climate considerations into the country's Vision 2050 development agenda,
ensuring alignment between climate action, economic growth, and poverty
reduction. The CCDR outlines five pathways for Tanzania to align climate
action with development goals: enhancing resilience through social services

Africa, despite its low contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, remains the
most vulnerable continent to climate change. This is because, according to
the African Development Bank: 1. we have 95% of rain-fed agriculture; and 2.
Seven of the 10 countries that are most vulnerable to climate change are on
the Continent. They are Mozambique, Malawi, Ghana and Madagascar.   Climate
change represents a major threat to Africa's economies, our development, our
infrastructure investments, water and food systems, public health,
agriculture and livelihoods. But, as I always say, challenges provide
opportunities. So, as entrepreneurs, we need to find solutions that will
harness our huge resource potential and demographic dividend to address
climate change in Africa. As we observe World Environment Day today, let us -
as entrepreneurs and businesspeople - commit to doing our part to ensure that
Africa escapes the worst-case scenario and continues to develop for the
   benefit of our people. #WorldEnvironmentDay

Sustainable Strategies for Food and Water Security in Africa: A Critical
Priority 🌍💧🍎 Food and water security in Africa remains a pressing
challenge, yet government development policies often seem disconnected from
real needs. 📉 Insufficient investments in sustainable agriculture 🌿 Weak
initiatives in water resource management 🔍 Meanwhile, billions are spent on
"fighting irregular migration." The irony? Redirecting these funds toward
sustainable development could transform rural economies and create millions
of local jobs. The missed opportunities are massive: 💡 Imagine an Africa
where every drop of water is optimized for agricultural productivity. Where
youth can find hope and opportunities at home instead of risking their lives
on dangerous migration routes. 👉 What if we rethought our priorities? At
Externa SARL, we firmly believe that sustainable development is the solution
to ensuring a prosperous future for Africa. Let’s work together to build
viable strategies, strengthen food and water security, and address the root
causes of migration, brain drain, and modern slavery. #FoodSecurity

🌊 River basin organizations: Making a difference for livelihoods,
development and peace 🌍 River basin organizations play a crucial role in
managing transboundary water resources for livelihoods, development, and
peace. In a recent Global Forum on Transboundary Water Cooperation,
representatives from RBOs worldwide emphasized the importance of cooperation
to address water-related challenges. The Senegal River Basin Organization
(OMVS) stands out as a successful example, working on joint investments in
hydraulic infrastructure to benefit member states in Africa. Partnerships
between the World Bank and RBOs, like OMVS, have led to significant
developments in water management and poverty alleviation. Moving forward,
there is a need to increase visibility and ensure financial sustainability
for RBOs through innovative funding, strategic communication, and knowledge
exchange. By working together, RBOs can effectively address global
development challenges and achieve sustainable water, food, and energy
   security in a changing climate. 🌊💰🌍 #RiverBasinOrganizations

3,200 feddans of land in Sudan are being optimized through agricultural
mechanization support from UNDP--which is helping address immediate food
security needs as well as enhancing resilience for Sudanese farmers.
Enhancing food security and livelihoods is just one way UNDP Sudan
effectively bridges the Humanitarian-Development-Peace (HDP) nexus,
connecting immediate humanitarian assistance with long-term sustainable
   development.
