The financing will support community-driven and gender-balanced resilience solutions. These include sustainable land management practices, access to climate-smart technologies and best practices, renewable energy, capacity-building for cooperatives, #agribusiness and micro, small and medium enterprises, credit and climate services, early warning, and index insurance. “These resources will further help consolidate the #FeedAfrica Strategy and complement the Country Food and Agriculture Delivery Compacts presented at the Dakar 2 Feed Africa: Food Sovereignty and Resilience Summit. This will support the reduction of poverty and food insecurity while contributing to accelerated sustainable economic growth in the region,” said Dr. Martin Fregene, the Bank’s Director for Agriculture and Agro-Industry. Financial inclusion can help vulnerable communities adapt by: ✅ Providing Climate-Smart Financing: Supporting smallholder farmers, who produce 80% of Africa’s food, with tools like drought-resistant seeds and irrigation systems. ✅ Strengthening Risk Management: Weather-indexed insurance helps mitigate the $520M annual climate damage in sub-Saharan Africa. ✅ Driving Green Transitions: Facilitating access to renewable energy for the 43% of Africans without electricity. ✅ Empowering Marginalized Groups: Ensuring women, who make up 50% of the agricultural workforce, access tailored financial services. 💸 Each $1 invested in disaster prevention saves $4 in recovery costs. By expanding access to financial services, Africa can build resilience, promote sustainable practices, and drive economic stability. #ClimateResilience #FinancialInclusion #Africa #SustainableDevelopment #Adaptation * 2 Like Comment Share * Copy * LinkedIn * Facebook * Twitter To view or add a comment, sign in * Takunda Mhazo Construction | Interior Design | Property Development | Real Estate | Renovations | landscaping 4mo * Report this post The Great Green Wall of Africa: A Beacon of Hope for a Sustainable Future In 2007, the African Union launched an ambitious initiative to combat desertification, climate change, and poverty in the Sahel region. The Great Green Wall of Africa, conceived by former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, aims to create a 7,000-mile belt of trees and vegetation across 11 countries, from Senegal to Djibouti. The project began in 2010, with the support of the African Union, the United Nations, and various international organizations. The participating countries, including Burkina Faso, Chad, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sudan, have committed to restoring 100 million hectares of degraded land by 2030. The project is funded by a combination of government contributions, international aid, and private investment. The African Development Bank, the World Bank, and the European Union are among the major donors. But who is doing the actual planting of trees? Local communities are at the forefront of this effort. Smallholder farmers, pastoralists, and rural communities are working together to plant and care for the trees, using traditional knowledge and innovative techniques. Women's groups, in particular, are playing a vital role in the project, as they are often responsible for collecting and planting the seeds. The benefits for local communities are already being felt. The Great Green Wall has created jobs, improved livelihoods, and enhanced food security. In Niger, for example, farmers have seen their incomes increase by 20% due to the project. Progress has been impressive, with over 18 million hectares of land restored so far. In Senegal, a 50-kilometer belt of trees has been planted, while in Ethiopia, over 2 billion seedlings have been distributed to farmers. Projects like the Great Green Wall demonstrate the power of collective action in addressing global challenges. Similar initiatives, such as the Green Belt Movement in Kenya and the Trillion Tree Campaign globally, show that we can make a difference when we work together. As we face the pressing issues of climate change, desertification, and sustainable development, the Great Green Wall of Africa serves as a beacon of hope. Let us continue to support and learn from this incredible initiative. Follow Takunda Mhazo for more insights and stories on engineering, construction, energy, and the environment. This is because, according to the African Development Bank: 1. we have 95% of rain-fed agriculture; and 2. Seven of the 10 countries that are most vulnerable to climate change are on the Continent. They are Mozambique, Malawi, Ghana and Madagascar. Climate change represents a major threat to Africa's economies, our development, our infrastructure investments, water and food systems, public health, agriculture and livelihoods. But, as I always say, challenges provide opportunities. So, as entrepreneurs, we need to find solutions that will harness our huge resource potential and demographic dividend to address climate change in Africa. As we observe World Environment Day today, let us - as entrepreneurs and businesspeople - commit to doing our part to ensure that Africa escapes the worst-case scenario and continues to develop for the benefit of our people. #WorldEnvironmentDay * 15 Like Comment Share * Copy * LinkedIn * Facebook * Twitter To view or add a comment, sign in * MADANY T. The irony? Redirecting these funds toward sustainable development could transform rural economies and create millions of local jobs. The missed opportunities are massive: 💡 Imagine an Africa where every drop of water is optimized for agricultural productivity.
