Ben Affleck’s big break as an actor came when he was 11 years old with The
Voyage of the Mimi, a PBS show designed to educate kids that ran for one season
in 1984. In it, the character of C.T. Granville is played by Affleck, a boy
whose quest for knowledge about how the world works finds him seeking out
conversations with scientists and other wise men and women.

Now, 38 years—and what feels like a number of professional and personal
lifetimes—later, the 49-year-old Affleck is no longer the searching boy but, in
a new film directed by George Clooney, the wise man. He plays Uncle Charlie, the
emotional heart of The Tender Bar, a bestselling memoir by J.R. Moehringer in
which he recounts how, largely abandoned by his own father, he found a world of
loving, generous, sometimes cockeyed father figures in his uncle’s Long Island
bar, with Uncle Charlie the greatest of them.
