I am specifically interested in the improvement of walking assessments using robotic assistance devices to better understand physical and psychological self-imposed walking limitations. In 2018, I began my medical training at the UTMB School of Medicine and have received my first two years of medical education. This medical training has added to a foundation of biophysiological understanding that I have been pursuing for over 10 years since my time at Baylor University began in 2001. I spent countless hours volunteering and shadowing in medical settings, and in 2016, I worked as a Junior Project Manager and Quality Assurance Manager in the field of Oncology for a medical scribe company. It was during this time that I witnesses firsthand the importance of the physician and patient contribution to medicine as I attended research meetings and tumor boards. The art of medicine and the experience of the patient came together to improve treatment and provide ways for individuals to participate in the optimization of their own care.

My professional goal is to become a physician-scientist in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and I wish to become an expert in health services methodologies that contribute to the safety and individualization of rehabilitation care. These skills will enable me to inform and develop clinical practice guidelines and policy around neurologic assessment and intervention during rehabilitation. </div> <input

A better understanding the of the neuroscience underlying these illnesses will allow us to create better treatments to improve the lives of many and advance the field of psychiatry. I am a neuropsychiatrist with advanced training in the clinical care of those with complex neuropsychiatric conditions. I completed a Psychiatry Residency followed by a Clinical Neuroscience and Neuropsychiatry research fellowship at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine.
I am a full time employee of the Hines VA. I work as a clinician 25% of the time, splitting my time between the neuromodulation service (performing electroconvulsive and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapies) and outpatient clinic. I also serve as the team psychiatrist on the Hines VA polytrauma team, the team that caters to the complex needs of Veterans with TBI. 75% of my time is devoted to research endeavors. I maintain a position in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University as an Adjunct Research Assistant Professor with ad hoc clinical duties in the Consult Liaison service. I teach psychiatry residents at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University and the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University. I serve as an early career investigator at the Hines VA and was recently awarded a CDA1 grant for my project titled “Establishing Relationships and Developing a Therapeutic Target for Impulsivity and Suicidality Among Veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury and Co-Occurirng Conditions,” wherein I am attempting to establish a link between suicidality and impulsivity in Veterans with TBI.</div> <input

The majority of this research uses data from large, representative cohort studies of older Mexican and Mexican-American adults. My colleagues and I also use National Medicare claims files to study the healthcare utilization of older adults with and without dementia. This includes a focus on the differences in healthcare utilization by older Mexican-Americans with and without dementia.</div> <input

Your professional identity is constantly evolving and will change as you advance
in your career, take on new roles and responsibilities, reflect on past
experiences, and re-evaluate goals. Given the importance that professional
identity development has on career outcomes, the theme of the 2022 Early Career
Development Course is defining, adapting, and promoting your professional
identity.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Early career researchers, clinician scientists, and clinicians interested in
starting a research agenda will find the course especially beneficial.
Attendees range from graduate students nearing the completion of their degree,
to postdoctoral scholars and junior faculty.
The course program changes annually, enabling attendees to enjoy a unique and
informative experience year after year.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

* Describe ways to identify areas for professional development and how to
 advocate for your professional needs.
* List strategies and resources to develop a career development plan.
* Summarize current policies, career opportunities, and research priorities at
 federal funding agencies.

KELLI L. LACROIX, BA

Student/Graduate Assistant
University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston
Fort worth, Texas, United States

As a current AHRQ T32 predoctoral fellow in the MD/PhD Combined Degree Program
at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, TX, I am pursuing
a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences with a focus in clinical research and
rehabilitation. I am specifically interested in the improvement of walking
assessments using robotic assistance devices to better understand physical and
psychological self-imposed walking limitations. In 2018, I began my medical
training at the UTMB School of Medicine and have received my first two years of
medical education. This medical training has added to a foundation of
biophysiological understanding that I have been pursuing for over 10 years since
my time at Baylor University began in 2001. I spent countless hours volunteering
and shadowing in medical settings, and in 2016, I worked as a Junior Project
Manager and Quality Assurance Manager in the field of Oncology for a medical
scribe company. It was during this time that I witnesses firsthand the
importance of the physician and patient contribution to medicine as I attended
research meetings and tumor boards. The art of medicine and the experience of
the patient came together to improve treatment and provide ways for individuals
to participate in the optimization of their own care.

My professional goal is to become a physician-scientist in the field of Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation, and I wish to become an expert in health services
methodologies that contribute to the safety and individualization of
rehabilitation care. These skills will enable me to inform and develop clinical
practice guidelines and policy around neurologic assessment and intervention
during rehabilitation.

I do not have any relevant financial / non-financial relationships with any
proprietary interests.

My career goal is to improve treatments for individuals with complex
neuropsychiatric conditions, particularly those with traumatic brain injury
(TBI) and co-occurring psychiatric sequelae. A better understanding the of the
neuroscience underlying these illnesses will allow us to create better
treatments to improve the lives of many and advance the field of psychiatry. I
am a neuropsychiatrist with advanced training in the clinical care of those with
complex neuropsychiatric conditions. I completed a Psychiatry Residency followed
by a Clinical Neuroscience and Neuropsychiatry research fellowship at
Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine.
I am a full time employee of the Hines VA. I work as a clinician 25% of the
time, splitting my time between the neuromodulation service (performing
electroconvulsive and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapies) and
outpatient clinic. I also serve as the team psychiatrist on the Hines VA
polytrauma team, the team that caters to the complex needs of Veterans with TBI.
75% of my time is devoted to research endeavors. I maintain a position in the
Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University as an
Adjunct Research Assistant Professor with ad hoc clinical duties in the Consult
Liaison service. I teach psychiatry residents at the Feinberg School of Medicine
at Northwestern University and the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola
