NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio -- The sale of recreational marijuana becomes legal today
(Dec. 7) in the state of Ohio.

However, in accordance with the recent voter-passed Issue 2, which allows
municipalities to decide whether to allow for the sale of cannabis, North
Olmsted City Council earlier this week voted to opt out of the conversation.

“The amendment that was passed by the voters allows for the state to make broad
changes to how recreational marijuana is regulated,” North Olmsted City Council
President Lou Brossard said.

“Given how new this is for the state, I think it’s wise to prohibit the
commercial growing and selling of recreational marijuana in the city until we
see what the state does and how other cities react and handle this. After
watching how this plays out throughout the state, City Council can revisit this
if it chooses to.”

North Olmsted Mayor Nicole Dailey Jones proposed the ordinance, which mirrors
the city’s current anti-medical marijuana dispensary position.

“It’s just a business regulation code that we asked City Council to pass, which
they did,” she said.

“We’re not talking about what’s going on in people’s homes. We’re just strictly
talking about the sale of adult cannabis within the city limits. So storefronts,
that’s what we’re prohibiting.”

North Olmsted Director of Economic and Community Development Max Upton said the
city’s decision was also based on the confusion experienced over the last month
after the passage of Issue 2.

Yesterday the Ohio Senate and Gov. Mike DeWine pushed for immediate recreational
sales at medical marijuana dispensaries.

In terms of revisiting the ordinance, the mayor said the city could bogart the
issue by incorporating language from other communities related to the sale of
recreational marijuana.

“What’s helpful is to see how other cities handle the situation,” she said. “You
can learn a lot from your peers. I know some cities have taken the approach of
doing a moratorium.

“We felt confident enough in our ability to come back and change our code if
need be that this was the way we felt comfortable going with it.”
