WELCOME TO SERENA’S WORLD


WHAT I’M UP TO NOW

Excited about AI/LLM and applied AI startups

 * Extremely fascinated by large language models (LLMs), I want to be directly
   involved in the training and deployment of SOTA billion parameter models, so
   I cancelled school this term to intern at Cohere as a Machine Learning
   Engineer.
 * Waterloo is full of tech talent, but imo the predominant culture is “find a
   good job” for stability. I want to reshape our culture to be less risk averse
   & more impact-oriented. So I’m one of two UWaterloo campus asssociates at 8VC
   (New York based firm) to bolster the builder/startup culture.
 * Planned a gap term to do a “project to project” lifestyle going around Europe
   while building
 * I also previously interned at CarperAI as a research assistant and at RBC as
   a SWE in the summer.


WHAT I’M UP TO (2022)

2022
 * Addicted to learning about AI safety, ML systems and AI.

   Organizing a 10-day long residential AI Alignment workshop with $10,000
   funding. Wrapping up on AGISF. Reading papers.

 * Interviewing ethical, non clout-chasing founders who genuinely help the world
   or causes they believe in. Exploring the future we’re working towards and the
   problems we’re deciding to dedicate our time to.
 * Learning about how I can genuinely solve important world issues.


WHAT I’VE WORKED ON

 * Making personalized climbing training accessible and affordable. Sits right
   on your phone. Working with cool people: Athletes from Team Canada and World
   Cup climbers & mentors from York Angel Investors & Spark Angels. Ft by Better
   Humans (385k followers) on Medium. Guest speaker at OPG (Ontario Power
   Generation) innovation event.
 * Won $12,000 from pitch competitions at Brilliant Catalyst. Youngest to be
   invited to pitch to York Angels Investors, 1517 Fund (San Diego).
 * Red Flags - Making travel safer. Hack The North winning project. Using NLP
   and scraping real time user generated data to report real-time crime in
   neighbourhoods.
 * Solo travelling - learning about life outside our echo-chamber & exploring
   world issues first hand.
 * Led a team of 23 brilliant high school students building a productivity web
   app for teens in Quarantine, supported by TD Canada. 2X National Finalist
   FBLA Canada.
 * Won 2020 York Regions Junior Girls Bouldering. 2x National Qualifier
   Bouldering.
 * Solo Travelled 💗 Paris, Montreal, Vienna, Toronto, Munich as a 17 years old


WILL ALWAYS LOVE

 * Thinking about obscure philosophical ideas & problems I want to dedicate my
   life to

I Skipped 5 Months of Online High School and Got a 99% Average

I SKIPPED 5 MONTHS OF ONLINE HIGH SCHOOL AND GOT A 99% AVERAGE

Ever since I was in grade 7 I've found school to be pretty inefficient for
learning. What do kids do in class these days anyway, you might wonder. Well
besides dating popular kids, chilling with friends, getting into social drama,
and chit-chatting about morning coffee with teachers, I guess kids also study at
school too.

What I Learned Solo-Travelling as a 17-year-old Girl

WHAT I LEARNED SOLO-TRAVELLING AS A 17-YEAR-OLD FEMALE

After finishing the last month of high school in June, I debuted my
solo-travelling journey. With no previous experience stepping more than 20km
outside my house on my own, I decided to start local first by taking a 3-hour
bus ride to Toronto for 10 days.

originated from my looming back pain and nagging sore neck. When was the last

Currently Thinking

I wonder if I want to become a douchbag whose end goal is to pursue
accomplishments and prestige without considering genuine personal interest or
impact on the world.

Chasing the feeling of being at the top of the hierarchy, then smirk at everyone
else as I sit at the top, looking down at the struggling population.

Thanks to this comparison juxtaposing my success with the their failures, I can
finally feel like I’ve made it.
