The Latest Blogs Wednesday Posted: Tuesday, September 14th, 2021, 10:02 PM by Tony Basilio Tennessee Tech Wednesday The Purpose of Tennessee Tech: Sure it's a wonderful opportunity for some local kids and others from the state and region on Tech's team to get a chance to play a game in Neyland Stadium. This is fun! As for Tennessee this is an opportunity to run Joe Milton back out there at QB and get it right. Or at least get him going. Through two games Joe Milton has been relatively lame at QB and has absolutely failed to connect on the long ball. If I'm Josh Heupel and Tennessee's brain trust and I've come to the conclusion that Joe Milton gives me the best shot to win at Florida, then I have one choice. Milton must start the Tennessee Tech game and Tennessee must use this opportunity to hit some deep throws and get Milton going. Is there any other alternative purpose for this game on Saturday? If you think about it, this is a best case opportunity for Tennessee....[more] Tuesday Posted: Monday, September 13th, 2021, 11:11 PM by Tony Basilio Tennessee Tech Tuesday: Ear To The Ground On QB Situation: I hear from a source internally that, believe it or not, Joe Milton actually graded out better than Hendon Hooker while the film was graded from the Pitt game. That seems counterintuitive until you consider the following. Hooker's two overthrows on screens were worse than any pass Milton threw besides the one to Tillman. Hooker's INT was egregious on Tennessee's final drive. Milton hasn't thrown a pass that could be INT'd all year. The deep ball to Hyatt was as good of a pass as you'll ever see. Hyatt also dropped two balls vs BG, one a TD. The deep shot to Walker Merrill in the end zone on the left hash could've been caught by a better positioned WR....[more] Monday Posted: Sunday, September 12th, 2021, 11:01 PM by Tony Basilio Tennessee Tech Monday: Josh Heupel's Worst Case Scenario Came To Life Saturday: Joe Milton performed horribly while Hendon Hooker gave a scrappy Tennessee team a chance to win versus better than decent Pitt. Now Heupel and staff have a QB situation to manage going forward. Orange Throat Time: Our UT Insider leads off our coverage today ... ON TO A BETTER SUBJECT ... Tennessee Basketball. The 2021-22 schedule is out and 13 teams Joe Lunardi currently has going to the NCAAs are on it. There are some interesting non-conference road trips if you are game, starting off with a delish Tip Off Tournament in Uncasville, CT, where the Vols play Villanova and either North Carolina or Purdue....[more] PITT OF DISAPPOINTMENT BUT NOT DESPAIR Posted: Sunday, September 12th, 2021, 10:10 PM by Beano ON MY ALLEGED MIND (9-13-21) LOST TO PITT BUT NOT THE PITS: Tennessee dropped a game it could have won on Saturday putting their chances of winning enough to become bowl eligible formally on the ledge but somehow, I came away encouraged rather than depressed. I see -or more accurately feel- something about this team I like that gives me hope going forward. Here are my major takeaways from Saturday’s action: STILL UNFULFILLED PROMISE: I understand why our coaching staff -and probably Michigan’s before them- want so badly for Joe Milton to be their QB. He oozes potential with his combination of size and physical skills that can’t be taught. Unfortunately, as a couple of High School coaches, at least two personal QB gurus and now two college staffs can attest little else can be either when it comes to Big Joe. This ain’t punt, pass and kick....[more] Friday Posted: Thursday, September 9th, 2021, 10:15 PM by Tony Basilio Happy Pittsburgh Friday ... Johnny Majors Day Friday ... Tony Basilio Show listeners knew him as the crusty, witty Paison from his caller days. Don would have been doubly emotional this Saturday. Not only was he a huge Vol fan who cherished the Tennessee traditions that Johnny Majors so richly represented but spent from three days after the attacks, until the completion of the cleanup, at Ground Zero protecting the health of Operating Engineers -Heavy Equipment Operators- and consoling families who lost loved ones in the tragedy. Don also had an affinity for the city -and the people- of Pittsburgh spending countless hours there in both professional and recreational pursuits. The Johnny Majors Classic would have been right in the Paison’s wheelhouse. Wish you were here to see it old friend....[more] Thursday Posted: Thursday, September 9th, 2021, 10:39 AM by Tony Basilio Tennessee Pittsburgh Thursday As we get closer to the Johnny Majors Classic we're going to do some quick hits news and notes ... Tennessee Neyland Stadium Renovation News: UT is seeking an approval of a revision in their Neyland Stadium Project Renovation tomorrow when they go before the State Building Commission in Knoxville. The Tony Basilio Show reported yesterday that the total project cost for this phase of work being done to Neyland Stadium is $180 million. Tennessee's change in request on this project for which they're seeking approval is the addition of a new south video Jumbotron to go with the proposed new video billboard being added that's already been announced for the Neyland Stadium's north end-zone. What this means is that Tennessee is attempting to add TWO STATE OF THE ART VIDEO BOARDS IN Neyland Stadium. The project will also include renovations to the south ground and concourse levels and includes what UT is terming 'life safety issues'. Also improvements to west bowl seating are in this deal along with demolition of South Hall including updating utilities. New amenities will include gates as well as specialty patron features....[more] Tuesday Posted: Wednesday, September 8th, 2021, 4:38 PM by Tony Basilio Pittsburgh Tuesday: Tennessee Playing It Smart With Byron Young? Let's hope so. Tennessee is absolutely trying to go the Urban Meyer at Florida route with Byron Young's suspension dating back to a few weeks he spent at one of these pop up schools that are percolating around the country. Any hoo, Tennessee is attempting to allow Young to serve his last game left on his two game suspension during the Tennessee Tech game next weekend. That's vintage Urban Meyer. If the Vols can pull this off it's going to give me some hope for the Danny White Era. Here's Josh Heupel on Young's Status ... Put it to bed for his team. As we've told you for weeks here it was going to be Joe Milton. Heupel felt like he had to make the choice public for credibility with his team. He felt like it was important to reward a guy who did everything they asked of him and performed well enough to be named the starter. Was Joe Milton a world beater in camp? Not really but he was better than his two competitors and that's what this is all about. The Hand Holding With Harrison Bailey Is Real & It Is On: Remember that in this space we called that not only would Joe Milton be named the starter but also that Hendon Hooker and Harrison Bailey would be bracketed behind thus not giving up the real depth chart....[more] Monday Posted: Sunday, August 29th, 2021, 11:00 PM by Tony Basilio Gameweek Monday! Can’t promise I’ll be as regular as past years but I will attempt to be less regimented and more concise. That should better serve both you and I. STILL EXCITED FOR VOL FOOTBALL: I can certainly understand if you’re not or are waiting for the Grid Vols to give you something to hang your hat on before investing any true emotional energy. You’ve earned that right many times over. I guess I’m just a hopeless, sentimental, sheep when it comes to College Football in general and Tennessee Football in particular. College Football is still easily my favorite sport to follow and the most eagerly anticipated on an annual basis and apparently the Vols lack of success can never dull that enthusiasm....[more] HEUPEL'S STAFF TAKING SHAPE RIDING THAT VOL HOOPS ROLLERCOASTER Posted: Thursday, February 18th, 2021, 7:49 PM by Beano FOR OPENERS: The Vols play baseball this weekend. Think warm thoughts. REALIZE PRESS CONFERENCES DON’T WIN GAMES BUT… I don’t blame the Tennessee Administration for putting the entire offensive staff on display front and center in Wednesday’s presser. Every one of them were very well spoken and convincing that they are in solidarity. They also appear to be united in how to approach, instruct and install an offense that will be fun for players to be a part of and for fans to watch. It is one of the reasons that I think you’re always better to put an offensive mind in charge of the program and let him delegate defensive duties rather than vice-versa....[more] ANOTHER NEW ERA LET IT BEGIN Posted: Tuesday, February 2nd, 2021, 3:25 PM by Beano FOR OPENERS: Coaching hire has been made. Time to get up, get out, get on with our lives. Thank Heavens NOT TOO HYPED FOR HEUPEL..BUT OK WITH IT The Josh Heupel hire doesn’t excite me, wouldn’t have been my choice and I can’t say I’m terribly optimistic how his tenure will develop. But it doesn’t make me angry or despondent and I’m far from devastated by it. I had already talked myself into a Tony Elliott hire when it appeared imminent and Heupel’s resume is 100X better than Elliot’s My preference would have been Lane Kiffin or Jamey Chadwell but if I’m perfectly honest Lane may not have been open to taking the job in spite of all his histrionics behind the scenes and my Chadwell love may have been more about recency bias, his local ties and the way he projects. There is no guarantee Lane would have behaved himself had he even accepted the job or that Chadwell would successfully make the jump from the shadows to the bigtime with no prior Power-5 experience....[more] THINGS MOVING QUICKLY MAYBE WE HAVE A PLAN AFTERALL Posted: Thursday, January 21st, 2021, 2:40 PM by Beano FOR OPENERS: I thought I would feel more relief after Jeremy Pruitt’s dismissal than I do. The way we got here is still a tad bothersome. I don't know that it was a good day but I'm certain it was a necessary day. A WEEK LATER I’M QUESTIONING MYSELF: Just last week I laid out a transition plan that I felt pretty confident in. The events of the days since have me questioning most everything I said. My original plan is in italics followed by my current thoughts in bold....[more] ACT 1 ABOUT TO CLOSE PLEASE MAKE ACT II BETTER THAN THE LAST 3 Posted: Wednesday, January 13th, 2021, 3:41 PM by Beano FOR OPENERS: Looks like Phase I of Tennessee’s latest cluster should come to an end by this weekend. Then the ‘real” fun starts DO WHAT’S BEST FOR ALL INVOLVED With evidence -and not necessarily the NCAA violations kind- mounting daily that Jeremy Pruitt’s time as the Head Coach of our Tennessee Volunteers is coming to a close it’s time to bring an end to all the cloak and dagger nonsense and let everyone move on with their lives. The longer Tennessee continues to dig into its own dirty laundry the greater the likelihood they damage the program worse than they would leaving it under the direction of a coach most have long-since deemed incapable. The only things that can come from extending the pressurized bargaining shenanigans are uncovering major violations leading to crippling sanctions, increased bleeding of an already weakened roster, diminishing the attractiveness of the opportunity for recruits and prospective coaches, or all of the above. Jeremy Pruitt hasn’t earned the right to continue as Tennessee’s Head Coach but he also doesn’t deserve for his reputation to be damaged beyond repair. He wasn’t ready for the job -and may never possess the tools necessary to lead his own program- but he did accept the challenge when offered and has worked tirelessly toward the goal that both he and Tennessee fans covet of making the program relevant again....[more] TIME TO CHILL ON ALL FRONTS I CAN'T DO JACK ABOUT ANY OF IT ANYWAY Posted: Thursday, January 7th, 2021, 4:10 PM by Beano FREE THOUGHT FRIDAY FOR OPENERS: Happy New Year. Good to be back and I wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous 2021. THINK I’LL JUST CHILL AND ENJOY: As I agonized through the Vols Wednesday basketball victory over Arkansas I finally took a brief timeout and asked myself "what the hell are you doing?” I came to the realization I was turning something fun into something miserable. It’s my shortcoming and one of my many flaws. I’m guilty of it in my softball playing and in following most all of my favorite sports teams. With the 2021 BasketVols I’ve put the cart waaaaay ahead of the horse....[more] PRUITT ERA MAY BE CLOSING PRUITT DERANGEMENT SYNDROME NEEDS TO GO REGARDLESS Posted: Sunday, December 20th, 2020, 3:46 PM by Beano ON MY MONDAY MIND FOR OPENERS: Nobody does bizarre like the Tennessee Football Program. Nobody! HOW (OR WHEN) DOES IT END HERE FOR PRUITT? Sitting in the North End Zone of Neyland Stadium Saturday my buddy Jeff showed me an article his sister had forwarded about an internal investigation The University of Tennessee was conducting into its football program for alleged recruiting violations authored by Fox Sports Knoxville’s Trey Wallace. My years on the radio have been exhilarating but have also raised my level of skepticism and curiosity on any breaking news concerning Tennessee Athletics as to timing and any sinister motive hidden within. I’m almost ashamed to say that I’m less trusting and more jaded than I desire to be. My first thought was the machine was moving on embattled Vol Coach Jeremy Pruitt and arming themselves with ammunition to pay only a portion of his contractual buyout....[more] BACK TO FOOTBALL NOT THINKING ABOUT PRUITT'S FUTURE (WHILE HOPING MORE INFLUENTIAL FOLKS ARE) Posted: Friday, December 18th, 2020, 8:10 AM by Beano FREE THOUGHT FRIDAY FOR OPENERS: I hoped to never get back to the point in my Vol fandom where it was all about the coach. Unfortunately, here I am again. WHAT VOLS MUST DO VERSUS A&M PROTECT OUR QBs This will easily be the greatest challenge that our young QBs have faced since wrestling control of the position out of Jarrett Guarantano’s iron grasp. Florida does not possess the stingy, physical, aggressive defense we are accustomed to seeing from the Gators and Vandy fielded no better than an average JUCO unit. A&M’s defense is the real deal. They are 2nd in the SEC in rush defense (100.8 ypg), 3rd in pass defense (229 ypg), and 3rd in scoring defense (22 ppg)....[more] HAPPY THE KIDS GOT A WIN REGARDLESS OF HOW LITTLE IT MEANS TO THE REST OF US Posted: Wednesday, December 16th, 2020, 7:23 PM by Beano ON MY MONDAY MIND FOR OPENERS: I have a lot of respect for the kids on both sides of the Tennessee-Vandy game. All have been given ample reason to say “to heck with this” by almost everyone involved but have persevered. Thanks guys. VANDY TAKEAWAYS: BLOGGER’S DISCLAIMER: I realize everything I write below is tempered by the fact Vandy played with what amounted to a middling FCS program roster. But let’s just do our best Phillip Fulmer and Jeremy Pruitt imitation and pretend they didn’t....[more] TOO MUCH VANDY TALK LET'S RIP TENNESSEE FOOTBALL INSTEAD Posted: Thursday, December 10th, 2020, 5:01 PM by Beano FREE THOUGHT FRIDAY FOR OPENERS: Not sure how to preview a game that may not happen and our opponent is unsure who they’ll put on the field if it does. So, let’s do one last (I almost promise) Tennessee Football/Jeremy Pruitt rant instead. IT’S NO LONGER IMPORTANT TO WIN BIG AT TENNESSEE: Winning is important at Tennessee; for its undying, long-suffering, longer-underserved fan base. But not to those in power getting rich off of Big Orange Nation’s passion. As long as enough seats are sold and donations continue to flow in everything else takes a back seat. Hell, you barely have to register a heartbeat to share in the vast TV riches the league soaks up, just ask this week’s opponent Vanderbilt....[more] GATORS DON'T NEED THE ACCELERATOR VOLS ARE JUST A SPARRING PARTNER Posted: Sunday, December 6th, 2020, 2:03 PM by Beano ON MY MONDAY MIND FOR OPENERS: It wasn’t the bloodthirsty Gators we’re used to seeing but the results were the same FLORIDA TAKEAWAYS: -Florida was actually primed for an upset if the Vols had enough team and leadership to pull it off. The Gators dropped passes, allowed more pressure on Kyle Trask than normal, messed around with a running game that was obviously ineffective and lacked their normal juice we’ve become accustomed to seeing them play with in this rivalry. They also punted several times on 4th and short in plus territory which they rarely do. They now treat us as if we’re Kentucky or Vandy....[more] VOLS PATH TO VICT.. AH FORGET IT WHAT MORE IS THERE TO SEE WITH PRUITT? Posted: Friday, December 4th, 2020, 7:24 AM by Beano FREE THOUGHT FRIDAY FOR OPENERS: Okay, it’s time. When you are granted the opportunities I’ve had to express a generally uninformed but passionate viewpoint on the air you’re bound to have some horrendous takes. Being lukewarm on Dan Mullen getting our job after the firing of Butch Jones was an egregious one. With the Gators coming in off of two double-digit win seasons under Mullen -headed for a third- and about to trounce our bohunkus for the third consecutive time, I’ll just have to own that one. NOW, leave me alone Tony, Throaty and TGMD AND NOW TO OUR COACH: The news of Kivon Bennett’s arrest on drug and weapons charges is the latest in a string of embarrassments for the University of Tennessee’s football program and embattled head coach Jeremy Pruitt. I know that coaches shouldn’t be held accountable for poor decisions made by a few young men under their tutelage -especially those they inherited- but the truth is even those who care little about whether the Vols ever win another football game do care about law breakers brought on campus for the express reason of being good on the football field....[more] Listen Live!
