OVERVIEW

Hamilton: An American Musical is not an average, everyday theater. It juxtaposes
America’s political history with contemporary music styles of hip-hop and rap.
Along with its modern sound, the musical also features actors to tell a story
that feels relevant in today’s time despite its origins.

Through its intricately penned lyrics and nuanced performances, Hamilton
presents a captivating experience. Telling the story of Founding Father
Alexander Hamilton, the musical follows his journey as an ambitious immigrant
who is eager to be a part of the American Revolutionary War. As the show
progresses, Hamilton evolves into a belligerent political figure plagued by
tragedy and scandal as he tries to set up America’s young government.

Inspired from Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton, full credit goes to
the writer and lyricist Lin-Manuel Miranda. His fusion of genres and the
amalgamation of pop culture encompass the appeal of Hamilton across multiple
generations.


HAMILTON – ORIGINAL SCORE

Hamilton is presented through songs and the story of the founding member is told
through hip-hop. The Hamilton Original Broadway Cast Recording became the first
Broadway cast album to reach number one position on the Billboard Rap Album
chart.

Hamilton mixes a base of hip-hop and rap to compose an ingenious songbook that’s
rich and diverse. The song Ten Duel Commandments takes inspiration from the
track Ten Crack Commandments by The Notorious B.I.G. and is a number that most
youngsters are familiar with. In the My Shot, Lin-Manuel Miranda engages the
older theater buffs by displaying Hamilton’s fiery determination as he struggles
to implement his political plans. The emotional trials are well presented in
songs like It’s Quiet Uptown.

Hamilton’s dynamic range earned it a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater
Album. For American listeners in particular, hearing the story of Alexander
Hamilton through familiar musical sounds and dialects is a powerful way for
reconnecting with history. And it’s one that people are likely to repeat.


HAMILTON – ORIGINAL CAST

Hamilton soared with its outstanding cast. In the original production Lin-Manuel
Miranda played the lead role of Alexander Hamilton. Leslie Odom, Jr. as Aaron
Burr, Alexander’s friend and later political adversary, shines in his emotional
arc. He comes across as a tragic character, seeking empathy instead of the
villain he is presented as in history books.

The original Broadway cast featured Phillipa Soo as Eliza Schuyler Hamilton,
Alexander’s wife. She played the part to perfection, a woman who falls in love,
only later to be betrayed by her husband, whom she eventually forgives. Renée
Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler, Hamilton’s sister-in-law is spectacular.
The musical touches upon her relationship with Hamilton which was at times
presumed to be romantic.

Daveed Diggs played the dual roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson,
presenting them with energy and crafty jollity.

Hamilton’s national tour features a brand new cast but Lin-Manuel Miranda has
promised to make a couple of appearances. He stated that it’s a role he would
like to go back to again and again.


HAMILTON – CRITICS REPORT CARD

Opening to positive reviews, Hamilton has been called the hottest ticket in town
by the Broadway World. The musical has seen its share of controversies, starting
with the actor Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr in the Broadway
replacement. In one of the January 2017 performances, Dixon addressed the vice
president-elect Mike Pence, who was in the audience. Delivering a scripted
speech during the final curtain call he said,

We, sir – we – are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new
administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or
defend us and uphold our inalienable rights.

While Pence took it in good spirit, President Donald Trump asked the cast of
Hamilton to apologize. He even took to Twitter, asking people to boycott the
musical.

In its review Hollywood Reporter stated that Hamilton delivers a history lesson
in an entertaining way.

The musical is a triumph...more to the point, it signals its immensely talented
creator and star as a game-changing figure in musical theater.
