He was a crewmember on the space shuttle program's STS-9 mission. During that space shuttle flight in 1983, Garriott became the first-ever person in space to communicate with amateur radio operators on the ground. He was also the first person to be heard directly from space by members of the public using simple radio receivers and scanners. That event transformed astronaut communications from space forever, allowing amateur radio operators and the public to communicate with people in space. But don't change that dial! Much more is coming in terms of amateur radio and the International Space Station. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Website : How Amateur Radio is Connecting Astronauts in Space with Kids on Earth: See the full story here: LINK × THE BEARS OF MANCHESTER ARE RADIO READY FOR THE ROAD RACE: THE BEARS OF MANCHESTER ARE RADIO READY FOR THE ROAD RACE: From : fox61.com on 2024-11-24 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MANCHESTER, Conn. -- How does the Manchester Road Race keep up the pace? Part of it is in the hands of the BEARS -- a group of Ham Radio operators who lend their time and talents to help keep the Road Race running. BEARS is an acronym for "Better Emergency Amateur Radio Service" and, this year, there will be 55 BEARs spread across the Manchester Road Race course providing both leading runners information and to help with any issues or emergencies that might occur. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Website : The BEARS of Manchester are Radio Ready for the Road Race: See the full story here: LINK × IOWA'S NEPM MILITARY-AMATEUR CROSS-BAND ACTIVATION PEARL HARBOR REMEMBRANCE IOWA'S NEPM MILITARY-AMATEUR CROSS-BAND ACTIVATION PEARL HARBOR REMEMBRANCE From : Doug Dowds, W6HB on 2024-11-23 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Battleship IOWA Amateur Radio Association (BIARA) and the IOWA's Innovation, Engineering and Technology Team (IET) will activate the ship's original NEPM Navy call sign on December 7 and 8, 2024. We thank the ARRL and their legal team for working with the Federal Communications Commission to obtain a waiver to Section 97.111(a) to allow appropriately licensed amateur radio operators to work NEPM for this limited event. Amateurs are reminded that they may NOT transmit on the military frequencies issued to NEPM. Amateur radio operators must operate within the privileges of their licenses. Licensees of other countries not under the US’s FCC jurisdiction are advised to refer to the regulations imposed by their licensing agencies before calling NEPM. Note that all phone operations are on UPPER SIDEBAND as the military does not authorize us to use LSB. NEPM transmit frequency and mode: Expected listening frequency: 7.469 MHz USB/J3E 7.261 MHz USB/J3E 12.382 MHz CW/A1A 14.061 MHz CW/A1A 14.667 MHz USB/J3E 14.261 MHz USB/J3E 19.160 MHz RTTY 21.150 MHz RTTY 21.856 MHz USB/J3E 21.361 USB/J3E Please note that listed listening frequencies are a starting point. The operator will tell you where we are listening to minimize your causing interference to stations in band that are not aware you are communicating with NEPM outside the amateur bands. For an NEPM QSL please follow the instructions found on our Web site at https://biara.org. The National Museum of the Surface Navy at Battleship IOWA will formally open on the US Navy’s 250th birthday on October 13, 2025. The Bellevue residents said they were concerned about safety and being able to communicate during emergency situations, so they decided to get a radio. Ham radio operators are restricted to use certain frequencies and are not allowed to do any business. It is simply for private recreation or emergency communications. This form of communication was developed in the early 1900s, with the word "ham" mocking operators who weren't skilled in Morse code. They were referred to as "ham-fisted," according to the National Association for Amateur Radio. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Website : Ham Radio Workshop Engages People of All Backgrounds: See the full story here: LINK PROPAGATION Issued 2024 Nov 25 0905 UTC Flux: 203 A-Index:7.
