HALF OF HISTORY

HALF OF HISTORY

Print

Whether it’s medicine, business, sports, art, invention, or the military, there
is no part of history and culture that women have not touched. This Women’s
History Month, learn more about these contributions, and celebrate the continued
efforts of women today with this two-pronged approach:

Support Women-Run Businesses
While women make up half of the U.S. labor market and, according to Grow
Ensemble, “35 percent of all women in the U.S. had completed a four-year degree
or more [in 2019],” these achievements “do not translate proportionally to
entrepreneurship.” In fact, a study by the Kauffman Foundation found that women
are around half as likely to start a new business as their male counterparts.
The study also found that when they do, these businesses tend to be smaller,
slower to grow, and financed at a lower rate.

Despite this, Grow Ensemble reports that “in the last two decades, the number of
female-owned companies increased 114 percent." And “women-owned businesses
generate $1.9 trillion in revenue and employ 9.4 million people, which makes
them an essential part of our economy.”

This Women’s History Month, support female-run businesses with both your wallet
and your awareness. As Grow Ensemble reminds us, when we contribute to the women
who are boosting the nation’s wealth, we’re helping more women join the
workforce as they see themselves in leadership roles.

Those in the business world are uniquely positioned to improve inclusivity and
pursue gender equity. Organizations and their leaders can offer mentorships,
create initiatives to spur female employee engagement, and foster a healthy
workplace culture.

Reconsider What You Think You Know
Make a conscious effort to educate yourself about the experiences of women in
society, the workplace, and throughout history.

For instance, consider current issues of gender inequality such as higher prices
of everyday “female-only” products also known as the “pink tax,” the pay gap,
and the disparities in representation in politics, business, and entertainment.

Read books by women about female experiences, listen to podcasts, watch movies
and TEDtalks, and support nonprofit organizations that work to solve
women-specific issues. Ask the women in your life to share their experiences.
And take the time to research current and systemic issues to better understand
their origin and nuances.

Finally, don’t forget to thank the women in your life and practice mindfulness
for the sake of understanding and inclusivity every single day.

Try This: If you’re a woman in business with some spare pieces in your
professional wardrobe, consider donating to Dress for Success, a global
organization that empowers women to achieve economic independence. This
nonprofit not only provides support, but helps women develop their skills as
they network and interview.
