care to share? i have several options from aaa, but, being from kentucky, am not
too familiar with east coast traffic patterns. i imagine it is going to be a
long trip. thanks in advance.

Ok---I assume you're going from DC? If so, here's one way--you'll still have to
endure part of I-95--head up 95 to the Baltimore Beltway (I-695), stay on it
until you pick up I-83 and head north until you get to I-81. Another way to get
to I-81 that avoids I-95 altogether--but would take you somewhat out of the
way--get on I-270 to Route 15 (you'll be in Frederick, MD at that point). Take
Route 15 to I-81. So how you get to I-81 is your choice.



Once on I-81, stay on it until you hit Scranton, then get on I-84/I-380 and stay
on it until it becomes I-84. Stay on I-84--it will take you to Massachusetts.
When you get to I-90 (Mass Turnpike), head east--it will take you right into
Boston.

I assume, as your message says, that you're going from Boston. Regardless, I'd
go with AAA's recommendations. Everyone has their favorite "secret" shortcut,
and they mostly just take you out of your way and dump you in with 10,000 other
people in on the secret. I-95 is the most direct route up the east coast even
though it's a pain in the neck. But you really can't out-think all the other
people who will be traveling over the holiday weekend. Just plan on it taking a
long time.

Not true---I've used this way during Thanksgiving and even though it's about 100
more miles of driving, we still made better time than if we took I-95. We
know--we beat other family members by hours who were going back to the DC area
to join us. The didn't listen and used I-95.

What day are you driving?







The worst time on I-95 is the Friday of a holiday weekend from late afternoon
into the evening, when rush hour combines with the weekend getaway. I would
highly advise avoiding I-95 from about 3 PM to 7PM on a Friday. The farther you
get from this time period in either direction, the better. The 4th itself will
be the end of a 4 day weekend for a lot of people, so expect heavier than usual
traffic at night.







I've never tried the 100 mile detour, so I can't comment on it. Sounds like it
might be worth a shot, though. I'll tell you what I know, though.







There is a good alterative from Boston to New York or even New Jersey that isn't
much longer than 95 and usually has better traffic. Take I-90 (the Mass Pike)
west to I-84. Take I-84 west (has some bad pockets of traffic, especially around
Hartford, but still better than I-95) to I-684 South in NY State. I-684 is very
rural and usually fast. Before you get to NYC, take I-287 West. Then you can
take I-87 South through the Bronx to meet up I-95 right before the George
Washington Bridge into New Jersey. Or if you want to avoid New York City
altogether, you can stay on I-287 West and cross the Tappan Zee Bridge, and then
take the Garden State Parkway South through NJ. The Garden State Parkway meets
up with the NJ Turnpike (I-95 South) in Woodbridge, NJ.







If traffic on the southern part of the NJ Turnpike is bad, I-295 is usually much
better. You can get to I-295 from the Turnpike in various spots, starting with
Exit 7A to I-195 West. One usual major bottleneck when the NJ Turnpike ends
before hitting the Delaware Memorial Bridge into Delaware. I-295 often has a
better approach to the bridge.







If you have a good map and are confident using it, it often helps to listen to a
traffic report on the radio. 1500 AM has traffic every 10 minutes for the New
York City area, and 101.5 FM has traffic every 15 minutes for New Jersey. 103.5
FM every 10 minutes for the DC area. Those are the ones that I know off the top
of my head.







If you had more time before your trip, I would highly recommend getting EZ-Pass
if you don't have it already. With all the tolls on the 95 corridor, you could
easily shave a half hour, maybe even an hour off the trip in the heaviest
traffic. The stupid toll plazas cause most of the traffic between NJ and DC
expecially.

Yes---by all means avoid driving anywhere near NYC if at all possible---been
there done that--no fun!

number of locations -- e.g., turnpike plazas supermarkets -- in both Maryland &
New York:

I lived in DC for four years and drove that route OFTEN, especially the stretch
as far as NYC. Here's my advice:







1) LISTEN TO TRAFFIC REPORTS. 95 is the most direct route, so when it's moving -
stay on it. Here are places where you can easily circumvent it.







WHERE DID NYC GO?:



As soon as you cross into Connecticut hop onto the Merrit Parkway - it runs
parrallel to 95 but keeps you further from NYC and its more populated suburbs.
You'll also be able to then connect into I-84 taking you over the Tapanzee
Bridge - crossing the Hudson well north of NYC. From there you can hop onto the
NJ Parkway (called I-87 for it's portion in NY) and that will let you COMPLETELY
circumvent NYC. Note: these are toll roads.







NJ STINKS [seriously - I lived there for 20 years]:



You're stuck on the NJ Parkway now... but not for long. Take the NJ Parkway to
the NJ Turnpike (rejoining 95). When you get to Trenton you can hop over to 295,
which runs completely parrallel to I-95 all the way to the Deleware Memorial
Bridge. Unless you are absolutely cruising - I highly suggest this route. First
- it's free, the NJ Turnpike / 95 is NOT. Second... typically only people from
NJ actaully think to use this route, and NJ drivers are always in a hurry. You
can do 80mph and be the slowest car on the road. Just look out for the goofy
interchange near exit 27 - just keep right and you'll be ok through South
Jersey.







BALTIMORE BYE-BYE:



Very simple, when 95 and 895 split... take 895 (left lanes I think). DO NOT TAKE
695 - it's MUCH slower and saves no time, but 895 CAN. It's a smaller tunnel but
a LOT less people use it.







Then it's also easy to get onto 295 - the Balt/Wash Parkway. It's not much
faster OR slower, but it's quick to access from 895 and I like to pair those two
shot-cuts together. Plus it's more local traffic and people who know what they
are doing - less crazy interstate drivers.







INTO DC:



Use Rt. 50. You'll approach from 495 Eastern (Inner) loop of the Cap. Beltway.
If you're taking 295... you'll be a stone's throw from the district before you
exit for Rt. 50. Take Rt. 50 west (NY Ave. once you enter the city) until you
hit N. Capital St. Turn left - and you should be 1 mile north of the Capitol
Building driving towards it (downtown).







Again, 95 is ALWAYS the fastest route, unless it's packed with traffic. Listen
for those traffic reports and if things sound rocky - use those shortcuts. GOOD
LUCK!

Just wanted to point out---if you don't want to pay lots of tolls, the way I
suggested is, IMO, the way to go. You won't have to pay any tolls until you
reach the Mass Pike.
