WHAT IS YOUR ROLE?

I am the recreation coordinator for the Sportsplex with the City of Brandon. I
oversee the day-to-day operations of the facility as well as all of the
programming for the North Hub of the City of Brandon.

HOW MANY STAFF WORK AT YOUR RECREATION FACILITY?

We have 40 staff members working at the facility.

WHAT IS THE AGE OF YOUR RECREATION FACILITY?

The facility is 46 years old.

WHAT DIFFERENTIATES YOUR RECREATION FACILITY IN YOUR COMMUNITY/CITY?

We are the only facility in Brandon that has an NHL-sized hockey rink, indoor
swimming pool, three racquetball courts, and a full-size 400-metre outdoor
track.

WHAT SERVICES/PROGRAMS DO YOU PROVIDE AT YOUR RECREATION FACILITY?

Our pool offers Lifesaving Society swimming lessons, and leadership courses,
including Swim for Life instructor courses and National Lifeguard award courses.
We provide drop-in court times for our racquetball courts as well as some
introductory courses. In the arena we offer a comprehensive learn-to-skate
program as well as many other public programs, including public skating, sticks
and pucks, and disco skate. We also have many children’s programs and have a
very popular summer day camp program.

SHARE A SIGNIFICANT EVENT OR OTHER IMPACTFUL MOMENTS THAT OCCURRED AT YOUR
RECREATION FACILITY.

While I have only been at our facility for three years, the most impactful
moment was when we were able to open the doors after the pandemic. It was so
great to see people using our facility again and to have our programs that we
had been planning for so long come to life.

WHAT MEASURE HAVE YOU TAKEN TO ENSURE YOUR RECREATION FACILITY IS ACCESSIBLE TO
EVERYONE?

Because our facility is aging, accessibility can be a challenge at times. We
work with local groups that face accessibility issues and assess the areas of
the facility that need improvement and develop a plan to overcome these
obstacles. The City of Brandon also does its best to make its facilities
affordable so that everyone can participate.

SHARE ANY FUN FACTS OR HISTORICAL REFERENCES ABOUT YOUR RECREATION FACILITY.

The City of Brandon hosted the Canada Games in both 1979 (Winter Games) and 1997
(Summer Games). The Sportsplex was one of the main facilities used during these
games. The Sportsplex has the only 50-metre pool between Regina and Winnipeg.

ANY NEW CHANGES OR FUTURE PLANS YOU CAN SHARE ABOUT YOUR RECREATION FACILITY?

The Sportsplex is currently undergoing some renovations that include the
replacement of the ice plant for the arena. There are further renovations being
discussed for the future including some accessibility upgrades and adding more
community meeting spaces.
