As someone who has worked for four decades in the corporate workplace, the last
20 years of which I spent time training the younger generation how to navigate
the complexities of the organization with professionalism, empathy and respect,
I was thrilled to see this new book by workplace expert and consultant, author
and creator of Be The Ultimate Assistant, Bonnie Low-Kramen.
I read Ms. Low-Kramen's previous book, "Be The Ultimate Assistant," and thought
it was a game changer for assistants. Now, "Staff Matters" is the book that
should be in the hands of every member of the workforce, including CEOs,
assistants and managers at all levels, HR professionals, recruiters and everyone
else who has anything at all to do with a workplace, including corporate board
members!
The matters that Ms. Low-Kramen examines in her book should be familiar to us
all. They also have been familiar to our parents, grandparents and
great-grandparents. Many of the issues covered have existed and have been
tolerated in workplaces around the world for decades, and in some cases for
centuries! They include, but are not limited to, discrimination, bullying,
sexual harassment, unfair pay and other compensation, leadership not asking the
staff before making decisions that directly affect their lives, human resources
and recruiting issues and great company policies that are not always adequately
or effectively enforced.
These issues have been talked about separately for ages. In "Staff Matters," Ms.
Low-Kramen pulls them together in one compelling book. She covers the waterfront
on the difficult workplace issues that affect the people who have been called
the backbone of business and industry: the staff, how they are — or are not —
valued, treated, nurtured and retained. And as the double meaning of the title
indicates, Ms. Low-Kramen stresses throughout the book that staff matters, and
it’s about time to recognize that fact.
Ms. Low-Kramen has stated that she believes that what makes "Staff Matters"
different from other workplace leadership and management books is perspective. I
couldn’t agree more. This is the book we’ve been waiting for, the book that

Ms. Low-Kramen looks at the workplace and its function in society from all
angles in this fascinating new book. The book is thoroughly researched and chock
full of anecdotal evidence to support the real, imminently relevant, and
NECESSARY topics of discussion in today's workplace. From leading with empathy,
to workplace bullying, to our current post-COVID workplace life, Ms. Low-Kramen
tackles it all with a verve and immediacy that is palpable. Her passion for the
topic and desire to look under every rock (however scary) really gives the
reader a sense that you are reading THE word on the modern workplace. Everyone
who works in an office should read this - from the CEO to the Janitor - everyone
can take something from this book. The last sentence could be the first one
(*and every sentence in between)... "We need to talk with each other."
Also - Chapters 14 & 15 on "Respect" and "Disrespect" could be their own book.
Such an in-depth look at a tough topic.

Bonnie Low-Kramen is passionate. Her book dedication says it all – “For the
staffs of the world. For our grandchildren, who will be joining them one day.”
She is passionate about people, respect, and building a better workplace. It’s
not about being a “their problem” but an “collective us solution.” And it starts
by understanding all sides. No one should ever have to leave work defeated, in a
state of tears, or feel the need to take out work frustrations on a boxing bag
at the gym because it’s seldom actually about the work but the people at work.
This book is for everyone. -- I was gifted this book, and I am very grateful.

This book is a true inside look into the challenges we are facing in today's
workplace. She talks about the wage gap, toxic work environments, dysfunctional
leadership, siloed communication, workplace bullying, sexual harassment, and
discrimination, to name a few. She interviewed Leaders, Assistants, HR
professionals, Recruiters, Leadership Experts, and Business School professors to
hear about their first-hand experiences and opinions about how to build the new
workplace.
She not only eloquently describes the issues, she also provides realistic and
attainable solutions to help us get through these troubled times. This book is a
MUST READ for HR, Leaders, Business School students, and anyone who is ready to
peel back the onion, take a hard look at the state of business today, and make
the changes you want to see in the world.

I read this author’s earlier book “Be The Ultimate Assistant” and recommended to
a few colleagues as well. Both books are important resources for everybody, no
matter what their title.
