irasional yang berasal dari keadaan masa kanak-kanak, yang mereka eksploitasi
dengan cara yang spesifik. Apa yang dapat diketahui seorang klinisi tentang ini?
Saya rasa metode psikonalitik pada dasarnya adalah sebuah metode historis.
Bahkan bila metode ini memfokuskan pada data medis, ia menginterpretasikannya
sebagai sebuah fungsi pengalaman masa silam. Untuk mengatakan bahwa
psikoanalisis mempelajari konflik antara yang matang dan yang infantil, antara
lapisan-lapisan terkini dan yang kuno di dalam pikiran, akan berarti bahwa
psikoanalisis mempelajari evolusi psikologis melalui analisis tentang individu.
Pada saat yang sama, ia menyoroti fakta bahwa sejarah kemanusiaan adalah sebuah
metabolisme dahsyat siklus-siklus kehidupan individu.

Jadi, saya ingin mengatakan bahwa buku ini adalah sebuah buku tentang
proses-proses sejarah. Tetapi seorang psikoanalisis adalah sebuah pengecualian,
mungkin seorang sejarawan dengan jenis baru; dalam mengkomitmenkan dirinya
sendiri untuk mempengaruhi apa yang diobservasinya, psikoanalis menjadi bagian
proses historis yang dipelajarinya. Sebagai seorang terapis, ia harus menyadari
reaksinya sendiri terhadap apa yang diobservasinya; “Ekuasi” (penyamaan) dirinya
sebagai seorang observer/pengamat menjadi instrumen observasi/pengamatannya.
Dengan demikian, penyelarasan terminologis dengan ilmu-ilmu yang lebih objektif
maupun pelepasan yang bermartabat dari kegegeran zaman dapat dan mestinya tidak
menjadikan metode psikonalitik apa yang disebut H. Sullivan “partisipan,” dan
secara sistematik memang demikianlah adanya. Menulis buku ini merupakan
pekerjaan yang menantang dan sekaligus menyenangkan. Menantang, karena ada
begitu banyak penelitian baru dan sangat menarik mengenai pelbagai aspek agresi
yang perlu dijadikan bahan pertimbangan.
