Exercise 2 Article Netflix to Charge $8 for Extra Users on Shared Accounts Netflix has explained how it plans to crack down on the sharing of account passwords in the US, as it tries to attract more subscribers to its service. The company said it will limit US viewership to people living in the same household. Those who subscribe to Netflix's plans — which cost $15.50 to $20 per month — will be able to allow another person living outside their household to use their password for an additional $8 per month, a $2 discount from the company's basic plan. Netflix, which is based in Los Gatos, California, has about 70 million US subscribers. The company hasn't said how it will authenticate subscriber identities or accounts, but said that everyone living in the same household of a US customer will be able to watch TV series and movies "wherever they are — at home, on the go, on holiday." With these changes, Netflix hopes to end a practice that the company allowed to go unchecked for years — during which time it's believed 100 million people worldwide were getting Netflix passwords from family and friends. But after a year of reduced subscriber growth that included its largest customer losses in more than a decade, Netflix is cracking down. In February 2023, it began blocking non-paying viewers in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain, following similar moves in Latin America. Netflix also recently introduced a $7 monthly plan that added commercials to its service for the first time. An additional 9 million worldwide viewers have subscribed since the ad-supported option was introduced, although not all of those signed up for the low-priced plan. Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters said that the company will likely lose subscribers as a result of the crackdown, but he expressed confidence that Netflix will be better off once people get used to the changes.
