This post is a must-read for every Exchange administrator and Outlook IT Pro who deals with Exchange connectivity. From an end-user perspective, this change will offer faster reconnections to the Exchange server when for instance resuming from hibernation or switching between a wired and wireless connection. In the future, it will also offer support for native multi-factor authentication for Exchange accounts. Support for MAPI over HTTP will be made available to Exchange Online (part of Office 365 for Business) customers later this year. Outlook 2010 will also get support for MAPI over HTTP connections in a future update. A new version of the Outlook Hotmail Connector has been released. Checking the about box will reveal the version number 14.0.6106.5001. The main new feature is that it now supports HTTPS, which means that all communication between Outlook and Windows Live services (Mail, Calendar and Contacts) is now being encrypted and thus fully secure. There is no need to change any settings to make it work; just install the latest version of the Outlook Hotmail Connector and you’re set. Note: You could see some Send/Receive errors and Outlook reporting “Limited Connectivity” for some time after installing this Outlook Hotmail Connector version. This is due to the fact that your old non-HTTPS Cookies need to expire first. This will fix itself over time. For details see the Send/Receive errors section. Several other fixes are included in this release as well, including a fix for characters which are valid in Outlook but invalid in Windows Live Hotmail. Also, flagged items with reminders will no longer prompt even after it was dismissed. For more see; Full list of fixes. Posted on: July 31, 2011 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- COUNT SELECTED ITEMS MACRO Outlook’s Status Bar can show how many items you have in a specific folder and also how many of those items are unread. However, a much requested feature is also have it reveal how many items have been selected. Unlike Windows Explorer, Outlook doesn’t hold this option. The closest Outlook has to offer is a workaround where you press ENTER “pretending” to open all these selected items at once. In this case Outlook will warn you about how many items you are trying to open and offers you to cancel the action. More about this workaround can be found in the MSOutlook.info Quick Tip; Count selected items In that tip I also mention that whipping up some VBA code for it is not that hard to do. Using a VBA method to count your selected items might be preferred over the mentioned workaround as it won’t have the risk of (accidentally) actually opening all the selected items at once and cause Outlook to hang. In this guide I’ll provide you with this code and instructions on how to implement it. This decision left out all the people who are using BCM in a standalone environment or in an environment which needs less than 5 Office 2010 licenses. Microsoft has reconsidered this decision and has now made BCM 2010 available as a free add-in. There is a catch though; you must already have a license of a qualifying previous version (2003 or 2007) to be entitled to get BCM for Outlook 2010. This means that if you want to get started with BCM 2010 but do not own a previous license for it, you’ll still need to obtain a Volume License version of the Office 2010 suite to be able to use it legally. However, the BCM download site accepts any key of an Office 2010 suite that includes Outlook and no check is made for a previous version. So, considering the above fact that there is no technical limitation of using BCM 2010 with any version of Outlook 2010, let’s hope that Microsoft will reconsider again and adjust the License Terms to make BCM 2010 a truly free add-in for all Outlook 2010 versions!
