Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, Amsterdam in 1982 and today. Motor traffic now removed
entirely here, now a route for bikes and trams only in this direction

One of the most intriguing & misunderstood street design and place-making ideas
in the world is the Dutch
#Woonerf
, or “living street.” When I studied woonerfs while working for the City of
Groningen, I learned the key is street design that makes it impossible to drive
faster than people can walk.

In 2011, a stretch of I-195 that ran right through the heart of Providence was
demolished and relocated, freeing up 26-acres of Downtown adjacent land for new
housing and an innovation district, reconnecting neighborhoods once divided by
the highway. 📍Providence, RI

Oh now we’re stopping in the 18th street yard and the conductor has released the
emergency door release so 20-30 employees can get into their personal cars and
drive home. Awesome use of a revenue train, guys.

7 seconds late today. Lots of problems with Metra but their trains do tend to
leave the terminal on time.

I live on the ME. Mom is coming to visit but we can't use transit to get her
downtown bc elevators. Which means driving and finding parking for her van. So
obnoxious.

POV you definitely run an accessible rail line and are not just installing
elevators and letting them break to comply with the ADA without actually making
it easy for people who can't climb stairs to ride your trains.

Not even listed is the fact that Millennium Station's elevator has been out for
over a year. It's been broken so long it's dropped off the list. That means
Millennium, Van Buren, and Museum campus -- all three downtown stations -- have
broken elevators.

New York City built more housing in the 1920s than it has built in the 1970s,
1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s COMBINED. Nobody alive knows what an actual urban

That cyclists "ride the inside for extra visibility from turning drivers" is
exactly the same intuition behind protected intersection design, where the cycle
lane itself swerves away from the car lane at intersections. It's just that
reflex codified in cement.

i think that this starter pack era will be over in a few weeks and we'll see
more experimentation with feeds and lists, instead of having all the different
things we want to follow in one stream. this tool can be useful for that today!

Metra boldly asks the question: “what if we make this rush hour train stop only
at half the platform, but don’t tell anyone, thus forcing people to run down the
platform and hamstringing our dwell times?” But — who shall answer?

does it so quietly and garbledly that no one can understand?” But again i ask:

Europe is lapping America on 24 hour service on weekends. All of Chicago's L
lines and Metra Electric used to run overnight. Now they don't. Meanwhile many
cities in Europe are now running subway and suburban trains all night on
weekends, plus a robust night bus network.

What Portland planned for a streetcar network in 2009 and what it thinks it can
do, maybe, 15 years later. Notwithstanding if urban mixed-traffic streetcars are
a good idea, this is an indictment on bad urban governance.
