RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IS OUR FIRST FREEDOM. DESANTIS’ IMMIGRATION POLICIES PRESENT A
GRAVE THREAT | COMMENTARY

Religious freedom has been called the first freedom ― not only because it is the
subject of the first clause of the First Amendment, but also because, for many
Americans of faith, it is the most essential freedom. That’s why, as evangelical
leaders who respect some other policies championed by Florida’s Gov. Ron
DeSantis, we joined evangelical pastors from throughout Florida recently to
speak out against his new immigration bill, State Bill 1718, that gravely
threatens religious liberty.

Jesus taught his followers that the greatest commandment was to love God and to
love one’s neighbor. He then told the story of a Good Samaritan who exemplified
neighborly love by transporting a vulnerable traveler in need to get help. If SB
1718 passes into law unamended, such transportation would be a felony in Florida
— at least if the Good Samaritan knew or had reason to suspect that the neighbor
in need had entered the United States unlawfully.
