Our Story
An underutilized building is a strain upon any company, and Mark Twain Cave
properties was waiting and hoping for divine intervention and inspiration on
what to do with such a large building. So, while attending a the National Cave
Association in 2010, and when a New York cave mentioned news on their winery,
inspiration struck. A winery was just what we needed, and the aforementioned
building would suit the endeavor perfectly. A winery would complement the caves,
our campground, and serve as both a tourist attraction as well as a waiting
place for our customers who visited the cave.
Naturally, the pressing question was where would I find wine? My goal was to
open a tasting room for Missouri wines rather than plant and maintain a
vineyard. I knew I wanted to partner with a professional, local Missouri
winemaker. Soon enough we discovered the Missouri Wine Board, which listed 107
Missouri wineries who could potentially become our partners. We agreed upon a
set of questions to pose to our new potential partners, divided the list in
half, and set our to compare apples to apples; or, in our case, grapes to
grapes.
I began at the bottom of the list while my assistant began at the top, and after
one phone call and site visit with the first name I read, I was convinced that
West Winery was the perfect partnership. Their mission was to create “small
batches of excellent wines” which matched my vision to open a local tasting room
that featured quality, Missouri made wine. The rest was easy. In 2012 we opened
our tasting room, thereby creating a perfect blend of wines and caves at Cave
Hollow West Winery.
