On Level I there are stunning student art displays commemorating the Year of the Dragon. We are looking forward to African Diaspora Night tomorrow night following a month-long celebration of Black History. March is Women’s History Month and it seems that everywhere you look there are tributes and recognitions of women who have contributed to the nation and the world. Celebrations include achievements. Here at school all members of the Class of 2024 completed their Senior Debates, bringing this talented group of students together in one room and one step closer to graduation. The Senior Debates are a graduation requirement as well as a storied school tradition. We could not be more proud of this class and all they have accomplished here at South Shore Charter. This year has been one of ongoing strategic planning as we map our direction for the next five years. Our school community has been engaged with and immersed in Strategic Planning Focus Groups. In January we held eleven Faculty and Staff Focus Groups. Last week we held family focus groups throughout our sending districts, Brockton, Randolph, and Weymouth, in addition to holding Family Focus Groups on campus and by Zoom. Through these focus groups, we are learning why families seek out our educational model and what they envision for the future of South Shore Charter. Next week we will host Student Focus Groups and later in March, two additional Family Focus Groups by Zoom. The Strategic Planning Focus Groups have been an important initiative to hear multiple voices and perspectives. We have been pleased with the commitment and participation from our families. On behalf of the Strategic Planning Committee, I would like to thank all school community members who have participated thus far. In addition to Strategic Planning, student enrollment is another important element of our school’s development. As a public charter school in Massachusetts we would be remiss if we did not pay attention to statewide enrollment trends. According to data provided by DESE, Massachusetts has shown a significant decline in student enrollment by 3.85% over the past six years; approximately 36,672 fewer students statewide. It seems that schools everywhere are feeling the impact of declining enrollment. As we look to the future, it is important to consider the impact these trends may have on South Shore Charter. We remain grateful for the families who believe in our mission of inspiring every student to excel in academics, service, and life. Through the strategic planning process and focus group feedback we have reaffirmed that we are college preparatory for everyone. Despite nationwide discussions regarding the costs versus value of a college education, we hold fast to the belief that higher education is the best route for our students. College preparatory is what we offer to carve out a path towards a successful life outcome for our students beginning on Level I and continuing all the way to high school. This is the vision that guides our mission. We are not alone in our beliefs. Throughout the South Shore we are fortunate to have continuously strong interest in our school. This year, we received 784 applications for 95 anticipated openings; reminding us all how our school’s impact is widening. We remain grateful for our school community and our current families who have shared their experiences at the South Shore Charter Public School with others, spreading the word and supporting our mission. The Enrollment Lottery will be held this upcoming Friday, March 8, 2024. This will be a half day for students. With 784 applications to be sorted, it is a tremendous undertaking. The months leading up to Friday have been filled with admissions events and community outreach. Beginning on November 1, we actively recruit new families throughout the South Shore for the upcoming school year. This year we were able to host an enrollment Open House on November 2 at both buildings. We hosted 225 visitors at 100 Longwater Circle and 71 visitors at 700 Longwater Drive. During Talk to us Tuesday sessions in January and February prospective students and families were able to visit the campus during the day, tour the hallways and classrooms while classes were in session, and meet students and teachers. Anticipated openings are determined by the number of students currently enrolled, the number of students graduating in June, and the number of students who have indicated they will be returning next year on the Intent to Return form. To determine optimal class size, taken into consideration are the number of available seats at each grade level, academic programming, student social/emotional health, and reaching all students in the classroom. Anticipated openings are posted above and on the day of the Enrollment Lottery. In addition to posting anticipated openings and the number of applications received, we post the number of applications received from each sending district. This year we received the highest number of applications from Brockton (165), the second highest number of applications from Weymouth (155), and the third highest number of applications from Randolph (100). We are eagerly anticipating the Enrollment Lottery and the opportunity to welcome new students and families to our school community. We are excited to host accepted student events in March and we cannot wait to meet the newest members of our school community. Thank you for your ongoing enthusiasm and support as we define and embrace the future of South Shore Charter Public School. If you would like to view this Weekly Update in it's entirety click here.
