Pocket Guide to Novenas

The History of Exorcism

As you may know, Adam Blai has become one of the world’s leading authorities on
exorcism.

His newest book gives you the fascinating history of exorcism, which goes far
beyond the Hollywood movie “The Exorcist,” which was based on a real case,
Robbie Mannheim, who was exorcised in 1949. Adam Blai makes it crystal clear
that when the Church directly confronts a demon who has taken over a person’s
body, it’s a situation fraught with severe danger.

That’s because the possessed person can strike out, speak, tempt, and manipulate
others. Having attended over 1,000 solemn exorcisms using the time-tested rite
of 1614, Blai has seen it all:

• He has witnessed levitation and other supernatural phenomena • He has been
spat upon hundreds of times

• He has experienced verbal abuse in the filthiest language imaginable

• He has been punched, kicked, gouged with fingernails, bitten, choked, and

So is demonic possession. But no solemn exorcism can be performed on a person
unless mental illness is ruled out. There are four proofs that a demon is
actually possessing a person:

• Speaking a language the person doesn’t know

• Knowledge of things (such as secret sins) that the person has no way of
knowing

• Supernatural strength

Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith made a crucial change in what
laypeople are allowed or forbidden to do in the case of demonic possession.

This change, which protects laypeople from being manipulated and deceived by a
