Meet Joanna - less than 10 months ago Joanna was clinging to life when an accident left her body wedged, motionless, pinned under the front of a car. As the Wellington Free Ambulance crew arrived, Joanna was barely conscious. Collapsed lungs, a serious head injury, and significant crush injuries meant Joanna was in the most serious of life-threatening situations and immediate expert medical treatment was vital to keep her alive. Our paramedics knew what was needed and swiftly moved into action. "THE PARAMEDICS RUSH TO PEOPLE LIKE ME, HAVING THEIR WORST, LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCES. THEY SHOW UP AND THEY SAVE LIVES." JOANNA. JOANNA IS JUST ONE OF THE 53,000 PATIENTS THE WELLINGTON FREE PARAMEDIC TEAM RESPONDED TO AND HELPED IN THE PAST YEAR. The immediate response and medical treatment from the Wellington Free Ambulance crews gave Joanna the best chance possible, tending to each of her injuries and doing everything they could to keep her alive. “It is hard to imagine the things that the paramedics see and have to deal with, they are amazing people who rush to people like me, having their worst, most life changing experiences. And they do show up, they show up and they save lives. Those words sound far too simple, but it’s the truth, they showed up, gave me expert medical care, and saved me.” After being stabilised, Joanna was transported to hospital for further treatment, waking to find her family by her ICU bedside. She endured multiple operations and was eventually well enough to return home after seven weeks in hospital. An outcome the Wellington Free paramedics describe as "simply remarkable" given the serious nature of her extensive injuries. It is without doubt that the quick and expert medical care and response from the Wellington Free paramedics is the main reason Joanna is here to share her story.
