A colorful atmospheric phenomenon known as the Northern Lights might be visible
in the skies over New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania Friday night into
Saturday morning, and perhaps as far south as Virginia and the Carolinas.

That’s the word from astronomy experts and meteorologists, who say a large
geomagnetic storm triggered by explosions on the sun may spark bright colors
glowing in the sky — an event technically called the aurora borealis but more
commonly known as the Northern Lights.

The Northern Lights are typically visible in the far northern United States, in
Canada, Alaska and other places far north of New Jersey. The phenomenon is seen
from the Garden State only on rare occasions, including one such event in April
2023.

WHAT ARE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

The Northern Lights are created “when large numbers of electrically charged
particles (electrons) at high speed stream in towards the earth along its
magnetic field and collide with the highest air particles,” according to the
Tromso Geophysical Observatory at the Arctic University of Norway.

“The air then lights up rather like what happens in a fluorescent light tube,”
the observatory notes. “The resulting colors reflect which gases we find up
there, the most usual yellow-green color coming from oxygen.”

Some experts describe the phenomenon as “bright dancing lights” in the sky.

“The marvel appears in many shades, but pale green and pink are the most
common,” says TheActiveTimes.com. “Hues of red, yellow, green, blue, and violet
have been reported in certain places.” Forecasters from AccuWeather say “over
the past few days, the sun has launched massive clouds of charged particles
toward the Earth.”

The expected result: “When these hit Earth’s magnetic field, they will ignite
the aurora borealis over the Northern Hemisphere and the aurora australis over
the Southern Hemisphere.”

AccuWeather says the Northern Nights — assuming thick clouds don’t block the
view — “may be visible to the naked eye as far south as Virginia, Missouri,
Colorado and Northern California on Friday night into early Saturday morning.”

Other weather forecasters say the glowing lights may be visible as far south as
the Carolinas.

CONCERNS ABOUT COMMUNICATION DISRUPTIONS

The Associated Press described the solar event as “an unusually strong solar
storm headed toward Earth” and noted it has the potential to disrupt power and
communications this upcoming weekend.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the agency that oversees
the National Weather Service, issued a rare “geomagnetic storm watch” — the
first in nearly 20 years. That was expected to become a warning Friday night,
when the effects of the solar outburst were due to reach Earth.

NOAA already has alerted operators of power plants and spacecraft in orbit to
take precautions.

“As far as the worst situation expected here at Earth, that’s tough to say and I
wouldn’t want to speculate on that,” said NOAA space weather forecaster Shawn
Dahl. “However, severe level is pretty extraordinary. It’s a very rare event to
happen.”
