charter trips and if you’re not yet certified we’ll pay for your certification
and on-the-road training.

SCHOOL BUS DRIVER FAQ

What is Zum?

Zum has reimagined student transportation, the nation’s largest mass transit
system. As a trusted partner for LA schools and beyond, Zum has modernized and
personalized the service to help deliver the best transportation experience to
families, communities, and schools.

What is a Zum School Bus Driver?

Certified School Bus Drivers at Zum play an essential role in our communities by
providing safe and reliable transportation for students, using a combination of
industry-standard tools and Zum’s own platform. 

Where will I be driving for Zum?

Zum has been awarded the Los Angeles Unified School District contract and you
will be driving a school bus for LAUSD students to and from home or charter bus
rentals.

How do I apply?

It’s easy. Call 1-760-DRIVEUP (1-760-374-8387) or apply online. Certified Bus
Drivers can skip the info session if they prefer. Others are encouraged to learn
more about starting a great career with Zum.

Do I need to have a commercial driver’s license (CDL)?

Yes, a California commercial driver’s license is required. Zum will pay for
on-the-road training and certification if you are not yet a Certified School Bus
Driver. Classroom training (40 hours) is not paid. 

What if I don’t have any experience?

Our training program has you covered! We will walk you through every step of the
certification process and make it easy for you to start your new career at Zum. 

Do I work directly with the schools or with Zum?

Zum handles the communication and logistics with schools so you can worry more
about safely and efficiently getting students to their destination. We offer
modern digital tools such as easy to use tablets that are in stock and ready for
use so you’ll quickly and easily know the routes (including changes) and
students you are picking up. 

Where are the bus depots located?

Our new, modern bus depots are located in Gardena, Sun Valley, and Downtown LA.

How many hours a week will I work?

Drivers shall be guaranteed a minimum of five (5) hours of work or pay,
regardless of whether buses are carrying students. You will work morning and
afternoons, 5+ hours a day on average, with opportunities for additional routes,
trips and hours for other assignments as they become available.

Am I compensated for overtime?

In the unforeseen event that you work overtime (we know LA traffic can be a
drag), you will be compensated accordingly.

What is included in my benefits?

Full medical benefits including dental and 401(k).

Do you have a 401(k)?

Yes, we offer a 401(k).

What is the overall pay rate for drivers?

Overall, drivers will be paid a base wage depending on years of driving
experience. A first-year, recently-certified driver would earn $26.00 per hour,
whereas a driver with 7+ years of experience would earn $33.00 per hour.

Will I get credit for my driving experience?

Yes, your prior commercial driving experience will be honored for the purpose of
determining your pay.

Will my seniority be recognized?

We plan to recognize seniority. We will eventually lock in the seniority and all
future hires will come in at the bottom of the seniority list. Want to ensure
you don’t lose your seniority? Easy—come to one of our ongoing info sessions and
we’ll help you through the process 100% of the way. Don’t wait til the last
minute and have all of your years count for nothing. Come over and apply now! 

Is Zum hiring unvaccinated drivers as well?

Los Angeles Unified School District mandates vaccines.  

If I apply to Zum now, will I still be able to collect unemployment if I don't
work the summer?

Yes, of course you can. Unemployment benefits are paid based on eligibility
criteria involving how many hours you’re able to work, not how many places
you’re actively employed.

I had a vacation planned this summer but really want to come to Zum, will you
accommodate this or should I wait until after I come back?

At Zum we believe in having a good work-life balance. We understand some of you
may have plans to go out for some ‘R&R’ this summer and will be happy to
accommodate your plans. Whatever you do, don’t let it stop you from applying and
getting an offer NOW. Simply make it known during the offer process what your
vacation plans are so we can schedule your road evaluation / training around it.
