Loader Find Us ADVERTISEMENT News World Greece GREEK PROTESTS: FARMERS SAY REDUCING ELECTRICITY COSTS NOT ENOUGH Farmers at a protest in Athens. - Copyright Euronews Copyright Euronews By Euronews with AP Published on 21/02/2024 - 12:22 GMT+1 Share this article Comments Share this article Facebook Twitter Flipboard Send Reddit Messenger Linkedin VK Copy/paste the article video embed link below: Copied Like many of their European counterparts, farmers in Greece are demanding their government do more to improve their working conditions. ADVERTISEMENT Scores of bright-coloured tractors were parked outside Greece's parliament on Tuesday, horns blaring, as thousands of farmers angry at high production costs brought their demands to Athens. “Without us, you don’t eat," one banner said. Some farmers carried mock coffins and funeral garlands as symbols of their plight. The farmers, whose grievances are similar to those at farmer protests elsewhere in Europe, have spent weeks staging sporadic blockades along highways and in rural towns. Along with the overall cost pressures, many of those who farm in central Greece are still reeling from major floods last year. The centre-right government has expressed sympathy with the farmers but said budgetary constraints prevent it from meeting all their demands, beyond substantial electricity cost reductions. Protesters say that's not enough. They want tax-free fuel, debt forgiveness, measures against foreign competition and speedier compensation for damage from natural disasters. Farmers are also frustrated at the substantial markup in shelf prices compared to what wholesalers pay them for their produce. Manolis Liakis, a farmer from the southern island of Crete, singled out fuel costs. He said farmers pay more than three times as much for petrol as shipping companies due to tax disparities. "We can’t be producing and (selling) our products for ridiculously low prices while the consumer buys them at extremely high prices,” he said. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in a television interview on Monday said he could not support additional tax breaks and concessions but wanted to continue discussions with protesters. All rights reserved In a show of solidarity, hundreds of students joined the farmers and protested government plans to end the state monopoly on university education. The government took back a previous threat to block Tuesday’s protest. Police were deployed to help divert highway traffic, and much of central Athens was blocked to motorists and public transport. The rally ended peacefully – but some farmers planned to stay outside parliament all night and leave with their tractors on Wednesday. ADVERTISEMENT Until now, UNESCO has refused to classify arenas of war as World Heritage Sites – but the institution has now changed its mind and said it is ready to study a new application. On 6 June, 1944, 150,000 men landed in just a few hours on the beaches of Omaha, Juno or Gold Beach in Normandy, France. They arrived as part of Operation Overlord, which marked the beginning of the liberation of Europe from the Nazi yoke. 10,000 men did not make it. Related * Bolero declared UNESCO intangible cultural heritage On the eve of the celebrations for the eightieth anniversary of the D-Day landings, this UNESCO listing is all the more relevant given that these beaches will soon be the only first-hand witnesses to a day etched into Europe's memories. The news from UNESCO is welcomed by the Normandy region and all those who pass on the memory. ADVERTISEMENT Only one in ten Europeans believe that Ukraine can defeat Russia, according to an EU-wide poll. Conducted across 12 EU countries - including France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and Sweden - the survey found that pessimism about the war's outcome was being fuelled by Ukraine's failed counteroffensive, a potential US policy shift and the possibility of Donald Trump getting into the White House. The report - titled 'Wars and Elections: How European leaders can maintain public support for Ukraine' - found that 20% predicted a Russian victory. The findings come on the eve of the second anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022. Though support for Kyiv among Europeans remains high, some form of "compromise settlement" is seen by those polled as the most likely solution to the war. This marks a shift in sentiment, with a majority of Europeans saying Ukraine must regain all of its lost territory this time last year. The report's authors argued that, based on these findings, EU politicians should take a more "realistic" approach that centres upon establishing how peace can be achieved. “In order to make the case for continued European support for Ukraine, EU leaders will need to change how they talk about the war,” co-author Mark Leonard of the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), which commissioned the polling, was quoted as saying by the Guardian. Most Europeans “are desperate to prevent a Russian victory” but do not believe Kyiv can win militarily, he continued. Facing an increasingly sceptical public, Leonard explained that arguments for more aid should focus on how it “could lead to a sustainable, negotiated peace that favours Kyiv – rather than a victory for Putin.” Ukrainians largely remain opposed to any settlement that cedes territory to Russia, according to polls. Some experts argue that a peace deal which handed over Ukrainian soil could embolden the Kremlin, possibly leading to more conflict in the future. Others believe that ending the bloodshed should be paramount. The poll was carried out in January. Moscow has since achieved a strategic and symbolic victory in the eastern Donetsk region, after Ukrainian forces were forced to withdraw from Adiivka this weekend. A preference for pushing Kyiv to accept a settlement was most common in Hungary (64%), Greece (59%) and Italy (52%), while support for Ukraine regaining territories was strongest in Sweden (50%), Portugal (48%) and Poland (47%). Opinions were more evenly split in Spain, the Netherlands, Germany and France.
