Menu * About The Artist * The Artwork * Contact Robert REALISTIC DRAWINGS & PAINTINGS BY ROBERT HERD ABOUT When I was a young boy, I loved to draw and paint. The results were encouraging and by the age when most kids were considering other livelihoods, I was already thinking seriously about a career in art. After graduating from the design program at art college I spent most of my creative career working with exhibit designers and architects. A few years back, I retired and once again began to draw and paint. TECHNIQUE I draw and paint in a realistic style. Most of my work is commissioned. For reference I usually work from clients' photographs, but whenever possible I take photos of my own. Before committing the work to canvas, I do several sketches first. This allows me to focus on the composition and solve any potential issues regarding perspective, shapes, volumes, light source and shadows. My canvas sizes vary depending on subject and my client parameters. INSPIRATION To paraphrase a famous writer: "All the beauty of life is made up of light and shadow". Light is a very important element in my paintings. Whatever the subject, I’m always aware of how the light plays on it. Light adds vibrancy to colours, depth to shadows and focus to fine details. It conveys mood, atmosphere and a sense of realism. I’m inspired by the art of Canadian realist painters Robert Bateman and Ken Danby. I have always been in awe of their work.
