[...]]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Since March, dental providers at Tooth Berry Kids Dental in Carmichael, as well as many other dental providers nationwide, have seen a limited number of patients with practices operating at 50% below normal capacity.</p> <p>For pediatric dentist Dr. Eman Ghoneim, these numbers were necessary in order to maintain proper social distancing, as per CDC guidelines.<em> </em></p> <p>According to a <a href="https://www.fresnostate.edu/chhs/cvhpi/documents/DENTIST%20SURVEY%206.9.COVID%2019%20report.pdf">report</a> by the <a href="https://www.fresnostate.edu/chhs/cvhpi/">Central Valley Health Policy Institute</a> at Fresno State, dentistry has been one of the hardest hit sectors during the COVID-19 pandemic, for both providers and patients.</p> <p>In mid-March, the American Dental Association recommended dental practices temporarily postpone elective procedures and only treat patients with urgent and emergency conditions. This recommendation aimed to alleviate the burden that dental emergencies would place on hospital emergency departments and to mitigate the virus transmission in dental settings. With a rise of cases in California, many dental practices opted to temporarily close their doors or to provide emergency services only.</p> <p>This left many in limbo, including Ghoneim of Tooth Berry Dental.</p> <p>“Although our practice did not close completely in March, we were only open for emergency patients,” Ghoneim said. “This forced us to postpone all non-emergency patients until June. Since then, we’ve had to adapt to more conservative ways of providing treatments in order to shorten dental visits. In turn, we’ve incurred more expenses for hand hygiene products and proper personal protective equipment.”</p> <p>As of May 18, the majority of states have allowed dentists to re-open their practices and to resume providing elective dental procedures. The Central Valley Health Policy Institute examined this in its report, <a href="https://www.fresnostate.edu/chhs/cvhpi/documents/DENTIST%20SURVEY%206.9.COVID%2019%20report.pdf">“Dentistry During and After the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Dental Providers’ Perspective.”</a></p> <p>As a timely response to the pandemic, this work aims to understand the dental providers’ perspective on how dentistry will be impacted by COVID-19 and to make policy recommendations to support the dental community. A survey shared with contacts nationwide showed that dental providers whose practices are located in California made up 34% of the total responses of 47 states surveyed.</p> <p>“As many dental providers and their staff re-opened their practices, it is essential to understand their perspective on how the COVID-19 pandemic may have a short- and a long-term impact on their practices and on dentistry in general,” said Hayam Megally, a research analyst at the Central Valley Health Policy Institute.</p> <p>In the report, a few key areas were surveyed, including the effectiveness of infection control and protection at the dental office amid the pandemic; adequacy of financial support offered to dental providers; overall needed support; and changes in the dental practice due to COVID-19.</p> <p>Of those surveyed, 62% believed the financial support they received from the CARES Act was adequate, while 33% believed it was inadequate. Timely dental practice guidelines and availability of personal protective equipment were other areas of support needed, but not provided, according to the survey.</p> <p>The institute says increased measures are expected to be implemented to ensure the safety of the dental team and patients, possibly causing a ripple effect as additional expenses will be imposed on dental providers, leading to increased fees for individuals receiving dental services — particularly those on Medicaid.</p> <p>“It is likely that the rising costs for dental care will widen the gap between Medi-Cal’s currently low payment rates and the actual costs of care, causing more dentists to increasingly limit the number of low-income patients they see,” said Dr. John Capitman, executive director of the Central Valley Health Policy Institute.</p> <p>According to the institute, patients who will be hit the hardest are the vulnerable and underserved.</p> <p>“These are individuals who are already experiencing disparity in accessing dental care,” Megally said. “They are communities of color, older adults, patients with special health needs and patients who rely on public insurance.”</p> <p>In the Central Valley, this is especially true being that Medi-Cal Dental beneficiaries currently access dental care at a low rate. According to the Central Valley Health Policy Institute, in 2015-2016, 28% of pregnant women who relied on Medi-Cal in Fresno County accessed dental care during pregnancy in comparison to 52% who had private insurance.</p> <p>Among Central Valley Medi-Cal Dental beneficiaries in 2018, only 25% of adults over 21 had annual dental visits.</p> <p>An online webinar discussing this report and its local impact is scheduled for sometime in August. Since 2015, Fresno State has been an impacted campus (one of [...]]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For a fifth straight year, Fresno State will open its spring admissions period, allowing upper-division transfer applicants from local and non-local community colleges to apply to start classes at Fresno State in spring 2021.</p> <p>The spring admissions period runs from Aug. 1 through 31.</p> <p>Since 2015, Fresno State has been an impacted campus (one of six in the 23-campus CSU system), meaning the University receives more qualified applicants than its state funding model will support.</p> <p>Being impacted makes admission to Fresno State increasingly competitive — meeting the minimum California State University requirements does not guarantee admission to Fresno State.</p> <p>“The high-quality, affordable education students receive at Fresno State opens up an array of professional opportunities for them upon graduation, in addition to the internship and service-learning experiences available during their time here as students,” said Dr. Malisa Lee, associate vice president of enrollment management in the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at Fresno State.</p> <p>As an impacted campus, the GPA requirement for spring 2021 will not be determined until after the priority application filing period ends. It will be based on the number of applications received and the number of enrollment spaces available.</p> <p>A decision has not yet been made if instruction in the spring semester will be primarily virtual, as the fall semester will be. It will depend on the evolving pandemic situation and guidance from the CSU Chancellor’s Office and public health officials. Campus leaders hope to be able to announce that decision in October, to allow students time to plan.</p> <p>Transfer applicants must first meet the CSU eligibility requirements for admission. Applicants will then be reviewed for provisional admission through Fresno State’s admission selection process.</p> <p>Fresno State is committed to serving the local region and gives priority to local applicants. Non-local applicants will have to meet a higher admission GPA.</p> <p>All<a href="http://fresnostate.edu/studentaffairs/are/futurestudent/transfer/requirements.html"> upper-division transfer requirements</a> must be met by the end of summer 2020 for student applications to be considered. No courses taken in the fall will be considered to satisfy admissions requirements for spring 2021.</p> <p>Students can apply online at <a href="http://www.calstate.edu/apply">www.calstate.edu/apply</a> starting on Aug. 1. As the sun rose over Hiroshima on a clear summer morning on Aug. 6, 1945, air-raid sirens blared, rousing a sleeping city awake. Several minutes later, an all-clear was issued, the sirens stopped, and the estimated 350,000 residents of the city began their daily routines on a hot summer day.</p> <p>An hour later, 31,000 feet over the city, a B-29 Superfortress silently began a bombing run that would change history. At 8:15 a.m., in a flash of light, about 70,000 people were instantly killed, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Tens of thousands more would die by the end of the year due to the effects of radioactive fallout. Except for a few buildings, the city was leveled, and the resulting fires completed the devastation.</p> <p>Less than three-quarters of a mile from ground zero in the shadow of Hiroshima Castle, a camphor tree was damaged and bent by the blast but remained standing. It was one of 170 hibakujumoku, a Japanese term meaning atomic bombed tree, that survived the cataclysm. They would become symbols of peace and hope.</p> <p>Three seedlings from this tree will be planted at <strong>8 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 6, in the </strong><a href="http://www.fresnostate.edu/adminserv/arboretum/peace-garden/index.html">Fresno State Peace Garden</a> to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, remember those who died and to hope that nuclear weapons are never used again. Due to <a href="http://www.fresnostate.edu/president/coronavirus/index.html">COVID-19</a> concerns, the public is asked to remain home and experience the ceremony <a href="https://www.facebook.com/FresnoEthicsCenter/">live on Facebook</a>.</p> <blockquote><p>“We are honored that our Peace Garden will be home to such special trees — trees whose ancestral memory imparts insight about life, hope and the human power to envision a harmonious future,” said Fresno State Provost Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval.</p></blockquote> <p>Rev. Kakei Nakagawa, rinban of the <a href="http://www.fresnobuddhisttemple.org/">Fresno Buddhist Temple</a>, will give the blessing. Speakers include Rev. Akiko Miyake-Stoner, <a href="https://www.ujcclife.com/about-us">United Japanese Christian Church</a>; Toru Maeda, <a href="https://www.sf.us.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_en/about_us.html">Consul General of Japan</a> in San Francisco; and Norman Otani, president of the Hiroshima Chuka Kenjinkai.</p> <p>The ceremony also marks the beginning of a three-day <a href="https://www.fresnostate.edu/artshum/ethicscenter/documents/Howard%20On%20Fasting.pdf">fast</a>, which will end at 11 a.m. Aug. 9, in recognition of Nagasaki’s atomic bombing. It is up to each participant to define how they will fast during this commemoration.</p> <blockquote><p>“We fast to affirm our commitment to nonviolence, peace, justice and to move forward the elimination of nuclear weapons and war as a tool of foreign policy,” said Dr. Sudarshan Kapoor, Fresno State professor emeritus of social work education and peace and conflict studies.</p></blockquote> <p>The seeds from the parent tree (<a href="http://glh.unitar.org/en/trees-in-hiroshima/">No. 17</a>) were collected by the <a href="http://glh.unitar.org/">Green Legacy Hiroshima</a> and sent to <a href="http://www.osdinitiatives.com/Green_Legacy_Hiroshima.html">One Sunny Day Initiatives</a> in Oregon in 2017. It brought back memories of [...]]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Although they graduated more than a decade apart, Fresno State alumni Nathan Cardella and Joseph Maldonado fondly shared the same memories as many current enology students.</p> <p>“The smell that would radiate during crush, bottling or racking,” Cardella said. “The best part was being able to still smell it during classes. It brought back memories of working in our family vineyards while I was growing up.”</p> <p>That experience also prepared Cardella to start the <a href="http://www.cardellawinery.com/">Cardella Winery</a> with his father, Rod, on their property in Mendota after he graduated in 2004. The shipment also included a coupon for a two-person tasting at the scenic, Panoche Circle-area winery that is situated in the Central Coast foothills.</p> <p>Cardella’s Barbera vintage received an impressive 90 point score from Wine Enthusiast magazine. The Pinot Grigio’s profile was equally complex and a nod to the family’s roots in Tuscany, where Nathan Cardella worked and studied for a year after graduation.</p> <p>“Fresno State armed me with the knowledge to make flawless wines,” Cardella said. “The industry knows that Fresno State is a premier school that teaches not only the science of winemaking but also how to use winery equipment and run a wine business.”</p> <p>The Cardella Winery and vineyard are rooted in the family tradition that goes back to Marlia, Italy before Carlo Cardella emigrated to Firebaugh in 1902. The winery still specializes in Italian varieties that are all grown on the estate, and currently includes Chardonnay, Merlot, Moscato, Prosecco, Ruby Cabernet, Syrah and Vin Santo vintages.</p> <p>“I fondly remember classes with <a href="https://fresnostate.edu/jcast/ve/faculty-staff/s-gu.html">Dr. (Sanliang) Gu</a> and experimenting in the campus vineyard to make wines from crop-forced vines,” Cardella said. “That was a tremendous experience learning that you could shift the ripening period of vineyards from summer to fall and produce grapes with more color, tannin and acid. We share those same general ideals at Cardella. We want to share incredible San Joaquin Valley wines with the people that live here.”</p> <p>He reconnected with the Fresno State <a href="https://fresnostate.edu/jcast/ve/index.html">Viticulture and Enology Department</a> by hiring Maldonado soon after he graduated in May 2016. Cardella now focuses more on the family’s commercial vineyard and ranch operations while serving as a winemaking consultant.</p> <p>Maldonado may not have had the same family connection where he grew up in Dos Palos, but quickly found a similar passion once he arrived at Fresno State.</p> <p>“Helping out at the campus winery and working in the cellar at Toca Madera Winery were instrumental experiences,” Maldonado said. “Also being able to assist faculty like Dr. Thornton and Dr. Rodriguez in research while being involved with the fall crush helped prepare me tremendously for the industry.”</p> <p>Looking ahead, future campus Alumni Vintners Wine Club deliveries will occur three times a year in the same delivery time frame as normal wine club shipments. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic [...]]]></description> <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Macie Saiz was looking forward to spending the spring 2020 semester back on the Fresno State campus after a semester studying abroad in Thailand. She had a great lineup of finance classes with professors that she admired, and she just started a service-learning project at the Valley Dream Center in Fresno.</p> <p>Then, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, forcing classes to go virtual, community service initiatives to be canceled and many service-learning projects, including Saiz’s, to come to an end.</p> <p>“What now?” Saiz thought. The service project was a critical part of Fresno State’s <a href="http://www.auxiliary.com/foundation/mcgarryloan.html">Mary E. McGarry Student Loan Fund</a>, which provided Saiz with a low-interest loan to help cover her college expenses. Some or all of the loan can be forgiven if students take a community service course and complete a service project through the University’s <a href="http://fresnostate.edu/academics/cesl/index.html">Jan and Bud Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning</a>.</p> <p>“It made me feel so good to be part of the community,” Saiz said about helping Fresno residents with tax preparation through the Valley Dream Center. She was also excited to work with children in a Saturday morning sports program once tax season was over. When her project abruptly ended, Saiz reached out to Richter Center director Chris Fiorentino to see what else she could do. “I’m open for anything. Anything you want to do, give it to me,” she said.</p> <p>Saiz, a finance major from Fresno who expects to graduate this fall, is one of thousands of Fresno State students, faculty and staff who provide service hours to the community every year. Despite the pandemic putting a halt to many service initiatives this spring, the University still provided a total of 1.2 million hours, according to the Service Impact on the Community Report by the Richter Center. This is the 11th year in a row that Fresno State has provided more than 1 million hours of service.</p> <p>The estimated economic impact of these hours is $38.8 million based on calculations from the <a href="https://independentsector.org/">Independent Sector</a>, a national nonpartisan network of nonprofit and philanthropic organizations and professionals. The 2018 value of an hour of volunteer time in California was $29.95, according to the network. The 2019 value, which is calculated using government data, is delayed due to the pandemic.</p> <p>“Despite the unprecedented impacts that the coronavirus had on normal campus operations and on our community partners, Fresno State continued to selflessly serve. Ultimately, the campus community provided a total of 1.27 million hours of service this year,” Fiorentino said.</p> <p>Highlights of this year’s report include an increase in the number of faculty and staff service hours, and the coronavirus-related service initiative from the Lyles College of Engineering <a href="https://magazine.fresnostate.edu/shielding-heroes/">to develop personal protective equipment</a>for Valley health care workers.</p> <p>Then, there were students like Saiz who found an alternative project to complete while juggling virtual classes. She worked with Fiorentino on an independent assignment to develop a resource list of fun and educational activities for people and families sheltering in place.</p> <p>“I did tons of research. I just kind of started building ideas and started working with it,” Saiz said. “There was so much I learned about. I tried to think nationally, globally, [and include] a children’s section, adult section, entertainment … I wanted things to keep people active, keep them positive.”</p> <p>The <a href="http://fresnostate.edu/academics/cesl/documents/GoingVirutalResources2020.pdf">resource list</a> was distributed across campus and posted on the Richter Center and Fresno State <a href="https://www.fresnostate.edu/chhs/recreation/">Department of Recreation Administration</a> websites.</p> <p>The Richter Center is responsible for coordinating the University’s community engagement and service-learning efforts. In August 2007, Jan and Bud Richter pledged to provide $3.5 million to establish the center based on the Richters’ belief that it would “instill in students a lifelong character trait of giving to the community.”</p> <p>The center works closely with other Fresno State programs and departments also involved in community engagement such as the <a href="http://www.fresnostate.edu/socialsciences/sociology/humanics/index.html">Humanics Program</a> at Fresno State, <a href="http://fresnostate.edu/studentaffairs/careers/student/jobs.html">Community Service Scholarship Program</a> and the <a href="http://fresnostate.edu/academics/cesl/programs/scholars/">Scholars in Service Program</a>. That was just one of many hands-on experiments Barajas participated in while attending a summer science program at Fresno State 13 years ago.</p> <p>“The experiments were based on the idea of how we can push away from using fossil fuels,” Barajas said. “We were doing physics and there was a lot of hands-on construction.” This memory stuck with Barajas as he built a passion for science.</p> <p>Many teachers will say their passion for teaching came from having great teachers growing up — and Barajas is no different. He is able to complete both of these programs through the Fresno Teacher Residency Program.</p> <p>“It feels amazing, and I’m surprised,” Barajas said. “I feel weird that this is something that I accomplished and they saw that much potential in me.” This year, the National Center for Teacher Residencies is recognizing 15 resident nominees from around the country. This award honors the tremendous work residents are doing to learn and grow as they prepare to become full-time teachers.</p> <p>After graduating from Fresno State in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in biology, Barajas spent the next year working as a substitute teacher and after-school program guide. He remembers speaking with the librarian at Sunnyside High School in Fresno and learning the librarian’s daughter went through the teacher residency program. This was not the first time he had heard good things about the program, and he decided to enroll in summer 2019 with an anticipated graduation date of fall 2020.</p> <blockquote><p>“It’s an intense program, but you have more than enough support,” Barajas said. “The whole idea is that you aren’t going at this alone. There was never someone I couldn’t talk to.”</p></blockquote> <p>Fresno State is dedicated to making a difference in teacher preparation. <a href="http://fresnostate.edu/kremen/teaching-credential/multiple-subject/index.html">Teacher residency programs</a> are intensive preservice preparation through which residents become members of the school community on Day 1 and contribute to the community throughout their teacher preparation. The residency model combines rigorous masters-level coursework, teacher credentialing coursework and in-classroom apprenticeship. Evidence shows that residents, upon graduation, are more like second-year teachers in their first year of teaching.</p> <p>Amy Bennett, Fresno Unified School District’s teacher residency program coordinator, said the partnership between Fresno State and the district was established 12 years ago.</p> <blockquote><p>“The residency program allows for collaboration to occur on a regular basis,” Bennett said. “We have resident graduates that are coming in well prepared to work in Fresno Unified. Their entire credentialing experience has been contextualized in our district. Not only is their student teaching being conducted in our classrooms, but they are engaging in professional learning, throughout the entire school year provided by our district, so they’re up to date on all the current initiatives.”</p></blockquote> <p>Bennett nominated Barajas for the Resident of the Year award. “He stood out right away in our professional learnings because he is so highly invested in the conversation, willing to participate and make connections to his own experience. He brought background knowledge from his subbing experience that stood out to me right away. He was eager to learn, receptive to the information he was learning, willing to turn it around and apply it to the practice in the classroom.”</p> <p>Barajas completed his residency in a science classroom at Scandinavian Middle School in Fresno. The science teachers took him under their wing and helped him along the way. He recently accepted a job at Yosemite Middle School as an eighth-grade science teacher and will begin this fall. He is currently planning for his first year to be taught via distance learning and is working on his syllabus and management plan.</p> <p>“I’m getting used to the idea of working on Microsoft Teams. I have to get used to how to maneuver my way through it and how to set up different groups,” Barajas said. “I’m figuring out exactly how am I going to take attendance and be able to do a warm-up online.”</p> <p>Fresno Unified is supporting its teachers through this online transition, providing a hub of resources on its website that both teachers and residents have access to.
