MARS EXPLORATION ROVER

NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Mission (MER) is an ongoing robotic space mission
involving two rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, exploring the planet Mars. It
began in 2003 with the sending of the two rovers—MER-A Spirit and MER-B
Opportunity—to explore the Martian surface and geology.

The mission's scientific objective was to search for and characterize a wide
range of rocks and soils that hold clues to past water activity on Mars. The
mission is part of NASA's Mars Exploration Program, which includes three
previous successful landers: the two Viking program landers in 1976 and Mars
Pathfinder probe in 1997.

The total cost of building, launching, landing and operating the rovers on the
surface for the initial 90-sol primary mission was US$820 million. Since the
rovers have continued to function beyond their initial 90 sol primary mission,
they have each received five mission extensions. The fifth mission extension was
granted in October 2007, and ran to the end of 2009. The total cost of the first
four mission extensions was $104 million, and the fifth mission extension is
expected to cost at least $20 million.

EXPLORATION OF MARS

The exploration of Mars is the study of Mars by spacecraft. Probes sent from
Earth, beginning in the late 20th century, have yielded a dramatic increase in
knowledge about the Martian system, focused primarily on understanding its
geology and habitability potential.

CURRENT STATUS

Engineering interplanetary journeys is very complicated, so the exploration of
Mars has experienced a high failure rate, especially in earlier attempts.
Roughly two-thirds of all spacecraft destined for Mars failed before completing
their missions, and there are some that failed before their observations could
begin. However, missions have also met with unexpected levels of success, such
as the twin Mars Exploration Rovers operating for years beyond their original
mission specifications.

As of 24 September 2014, two scientific rovers were on the surface of Mars
beaming signals back to Earth (Opportunity of the Mars Exploration Rover
mission, and Curiosity of the Mars Science Laboratory mission), with five
orbiters currently surveying the planet: Mars Odyssey; Mars Express; Mars
Reconnaissance Orbiter; Mars Orbiter Mission; and MAVEN.

 * NASA PERSEVERANCE MARS ROVER BEGINS KEY JOURNEY TO FIND LIFE - BBC NEWS

Nasa's Perseverance rover has reached a big moment in its mission to find
evidence of life on Mars. The robot will begin to climb up an ancient delta
feature in the crater where it landed, stopping to examine rocks that could
possibly retain evidence of life. On its way back down, Perseverance will
collect some of these rocks, placing the samples at the base of the delta to
be retrieved by later missions. The goal is to bring this material back to
Earth in the 2030s for detailed inspection. The BBC’s Science editor Rebecca

 * MARS SAMPLE RETURN: BRINGING MARS ROCK SAMPLES BACK TO EARTH

NASA and the European Space Agency are developing plans for one of the most
ambitious campaigns ever attempted in space: bringing the first samples of
Mars material safely back to Earth for detailed study. The diverse set of
scientifically curated samples now being collected by NASA’s Mars
Perseverance rover could help scientists answer the question of whether
ancient life ever arose on the Red Planet. Bringing samples of Mars to Earth
for future study would happen in several steps with multiple spacecraft, and
in some ways, in a synchronized manner. This short animation features key
moments of the Mars Sample Return campaign: from landing on Mars and securing
the sample tubes to launching them off the surface and ferrying them back to
Earth. Animation is contributed by NASA’s Jet Prop...

Nasa's Perseverance rover has reached a big moment in its mission to find
evidence of life on Mars. The robot will begin to climb up an ancient delta
feature in the crater where it landed, stopping to examine rocks that could
possibly retain evidence of life. On its way back down, Perseverance will
collect some of these rocks, placing the samples at the base of the delta to be
retrieved by later missions. The goal is to bring this material back to Earth in
the 2030s for detailed inspection. The BBC’s Science editor Rebecca Morelle

NASA and the European Space Agency are developing plans for one of the most
ambitious campaigns ever attempted in space: bringing the first samples of Mars
material safely back to Earth for detailed study. The diverse set of
scientifically curated samples now being collected by NASA’s Mars Perseverance
rover could help scientists answer the question of whether ancient life ever
arose on the Red Planet. Bringing samples of Mars to Earth for future study
would happen in several steps with multiple spacecraft, and in some ways, in a
synchronized manner. This short animation features key moments of the Mars
Sample Return campaign: from landing on Mars and securing the sample tubes to
launching them off the surface and ferrying them back to Earth. Animation is
contributed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the European Space Agency,
Goddard Space Flight Center, and Marshall Space Flight Center. Learn more:

MER-A (Mars Exploration Rover -- A), is a robotic rover on Mars, active from
2004 to 2010. It was one of two rovers of NASA's ongoing Mars Exploration Rover
Mission. It landed successfully on Mars at 04:35 Ground UTC on January 4, 2004,
three weeks before its twin, Opportunity (MER-B), landed on the other side of
the planet. Its name was chosen through a NASA-sponsored student essay
competition. The rover became stuck in late 2009, and its last communication
with Earth was sent on March 22, 2010. The rover completed its planned 90-sol
mission. Aided by cleaning events that resulted in higher power from its solar
panels, Spirit went on to function effectively over twenty times longer than
NASA planners expected following mission completion. Spirit also logged 7.73 km
(4.8 mi) of driving instead of the planned 600 m (0.4 mi), allowing more
extensive geological analysis of Martian rocks and planetary surface features.
Initial scientific results from the first phase of the mission (the 90-sol prime
mission) were published in a special issue of the journal Science. On May 1,
2009 (5 years, 3 months, 27 Earth days after landing; 21.6 times the planned
mission duration), Spirit became stuck in soft soil. This was not the first of
the mission's "embedding events" and for the following eight months NASA
carefully analyzed the situation, running Earth-based theoretical and practical
simulations, and finally programming the rover to make extrication drives in an
attempt to free itself. These efforts continued until January 26, 2010 when NASA
officials announced that the rover was likely irrecoverably obstructed by its
location in soft soil, though it continued to perform scientific research from
its current location. The rover continued in a stationary science platform role
until communication with Spirit stopped on sol 2210 (March 22, 2010). JPL
continued to attempt to regain contact until May 24, 2011, when NASA announced
that efforts to communicate with the unresponsive rover had ended. A formal
farewell was planned at NASA headquarters after the Memorial Day holiday and was
televised on NASA TV. Hope you enjoyed it!

Summary: The Mars2020 Perseverance Rover took about 8 years to complete here
on Earth. Built at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena,
California. Then it was shipped to Kennedy Space Center in Florida where it
was launched. It took 7 months to get to Mars. Parts of the spacecraft
include Cruise Stage, Backshell, Descent Stage, Perseverance, and the Heat
Shield. Getting to the Surface of Mars is called EDL - Entry, Descent, and
Landing. This must happen autonomously. The main purpose of the rover is to
search for signs of life. Scientific instruments include SuperCam, MastCam-Z,
MEDA, SHERLOC, WATSON, PIXL, MOXIE, and RIMFAX. The rover also brought along
a helicopter called Ingenuity. This is the first helicopter to fly on another
   planet! ⌚Timestamps: 00:00-Intro 00:56-Previous Mars Rovers 01:34-Built on

Morelle reports. Please subscribe HERE http://bit.ly/1rbfUog #Mars #BBCNews

This short animation features key
moments of the Mars Sample Return campaign: from landing on Mars and securing
the sample tubes to launching them off the surface and ferrying them back to
Earth. Animation is contributed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the
European Space Agency, Goddard Space Flight Center, and Marshall Space Flight
   Center. Learn more: https://mars.nasa.gov/msr Credit:

   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rln_qHoWIqg From Wiki : Spirit, MER-A (Mars
Exploration Rover -- A), is a robotic rover on Mars, active from 2004 to
2010. It was one of two rovers of NASA's ongoing Mars Exploration Rover
Mission. It landed successfully on Mars at 04:35 Ground UTC on January 4,
2004, three weeks before its twin, Opportunity (MER-B), landed on the other
side of the planet. Its name was chosen through a NASA-sponsored student
essay competition. The rover became stuck in late 2009, and its last
communication with Earth was sent on March 22, 2010. The rover completed its
planned 90-sol mission. Aided by cleaning events that resulted in higher
power from its solar panels, Spirit went on to function effectively over
twenty times longer than NASA planners expected following mission completion.
Spirit also logged 7.73 km (4.8 mi) of driving instead of the planned 600 m
(0.4 mi), allowing more extensive geological analysis of Martian rocks and
planetary surface features. Initial scientific results from the first phase
of the mission (the 90-sol prime mission) were published in a special issue
of the journal Science. On May 1, 2009 (5 years, 3 months, 27 Earth days
after landing; 21.6 times the planned mission duration), Spirit became stuck
in soft soil. This was not the first of the mission's "embedding events" and
for the following eight months NASA carefully analyzed the situation, running
Earth-based theoretical and practical simulations, and finally programming
the rover to make extrication drives in an attempt to free itself. These
efforts continued until January 26, 2010 when NASA officials announced that
the rover was likely irrecoverably obstructed by its location in soft soil,
though it continued to perform scientific research from its current location.
The rover continued in a stationary science platform role until communication
with Spirit stopped on sol 2210 (March 22, 2010). JPL continued to attempt to
regain contact until May 24, 2011, when NASA announced that efforts to
communicate with the unresponsive rover had ended. A formal farewell was
planned at NASA headquarters after the Memorial Day holiday and was televised
on NASA TV. Hope you enjoyed it!

On January 25, 2004, nasa Opportunity rover spacecraft landed on Mars. It was
the second flight of nasa Mars exploration mission to the Red Planet. the
Spirit rover arrived, just three weeks before. The mission is now longer for
Mars Rover ,. These simulations show how both the Spirit and Opportunity
landed on Mars, lined inside airbags that bounced several times before
stopping. NASA's Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission was a robotic space
mission involving two Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, exploring the
planet Mars. It began in 2003 with the launch of the two rovers: MER-A Spirit
and MER-B Opportunity—to explore the Martian surface and geology; both landed
on Mars at separate locations in January 2004. Both rovers far outlived their
planned missions of 90 Martian solar days: MER-A Spirit was active until
March 22, 2010, while MER-B Opportunity was active until June 10, 2018 and
holds the record for the longest distance driven by any off-Earth wheeled
   vehicle.

Animations for media and public use. This reel depicts key events during
entry, descent, and landing that will occur when NASA’s Perseverance rover
lands on Mars February 18, 2021. In the span of about seven minutes, the
spacecraft slows down from about 12,100 mph (19,500 kph) at the top of the
Martian atmosphere to about 2 mph (3 kph) at touchdown in an area called
Jezero Crater. Perseverance will seek signs of ancient microbial life on
Mars, collect and cache Martian rock and regolith (broken rock and dust),
characterize the planet's geology and climate, and pave the way for human

NASA and the European Space Agency are developing plans for one of the
most ambitious campaigns ever attempted in space: bringing the first
samples of Mars material safely back to Earth for detailed study. The
diverse set of scientifically curated samples now being collected by
NASA’s Mars Perseverance rover could help scientists answer the question
of whether ancient life ever arose on the Red Planet. Bringing samples of
Mars to Earth for future study would happen in several steps with multiple
spacecraft, and in some ways, in a synchronized manner. This short

Spirit, MER-A (Mars Exploration Rover -- A), is a robotic rover on Mars,
active from 2004 to 2010. It was one of two rovers of NASA's ongoing Mars
Exploration Rover Mission. It landed successfully on Mars at 04:35 Ground
UTC on January 4, 2004, three weeks before its twin, Opportunity (MER-B),
landed on the other side of the planet. Its name was chosen through a
NASA-sponsored student essay competition. The rover became stuck in late
2009, and its last communication with Earth was sent on March 22, 2010. The
rover completed its planned 90-sol mission. Aided by cleaning events that
resulted in higher power from its solar panels, Spirit went on to function
effectively over twenty times longer than NASA planners expected
following mission completion. Spirit also logged 7.73 km (4.8 mi) of
driving instead of the planned 600 m (0.4 mi), allowing more extensive
geological analysis of Martian rocks and planetary surface features.
Initial scientific results from the first phase of the mission (the 90-sol
prime mission) were published in a special issue of the journal Science. On
May 1, 2009 (5 years, 3 months, 27 Earth days after landing; 21.6 times the
planned mission duration), Spirit became stuck in soft soil. This was not
the first of the mission's "embedding events" and for the following eight
months NASA carefully analyzed the situation, running Earth-based
theoretical and practical simulations, and finally programming the
rover to make extrication drives in an attempt to free itself. These
efforts continued until January 26, 2010 when NASA officials announced
that the rover was likely irrecoverably obstructed by its location in
soft soil, though it continued to perform scientific research from its
current location. The rover continued in a stationary science platform
role until communication with Spirit stopped on sol 2210 (March 22, 2010).
JPL continued to attempt to regain contact until May 24, 2011, when NASA
announced that efforts to communicate with the unresponsive rover had
ended. A formal farewell was planned at NASA headquarters after the
Memorial Day holiday and was televised on NASA TV. Hope you enjoyed it!

the Spirit rover arrived, just three weeks before. The mission is now longer
for Mars Rover ,. These simulations show how both the Spirit and
Opportunity landed on Mars, lined inside airbags that bounced several
times before stopping. NASA's Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission was a
robotic space mission involving two Mars rovers, Spirit and
Opportunity, exploring the planet Mars. It began in 2003 with the launch
of the two rovers: MER-A Spirit and MER-B Opportunity—to explore the
Martian surface and geology; both landed on Mars at separate locations
in January 2004. Both rovers far outlived their planned missions of 90
Martian solar days: MER-A Spirit was active until March 22, 2010, while MER-B
Opportunity was active until June 10, 2018 and holds the record for the
longest distance driven by any off-Earth wheeled vehicle.

Perseverance will seek signs of ancient microbial life on
Mars, collect and cache Martian rock and regolith (broken rock and dust),
characterize the planet's geology and climate, and pave the way for
human exploration of the Red Planet. For more animations and video of the
