Vision care starts with a regular eye health exam

by Jennifer Jacoby-Smith

for SP Creative Services

Just like dental and medical check-ups, it’s important to get regular eye
examinations to ensure vision health.

Even when you think your vision is fine, regular eye check-ups are important.
Some eye diseases can cause permanent damage without warning or noticeable
symptoms.

As well as recognizing serious eye ailments, eye doctors can also diagnose and
correct vision problems before they become serious.

Good eye health begins early by taking your child to see an optometrist.

“Children should be examined at the latest by age three,” explains Dr. Leland
Kolbenson, President of the Saskatchewan Association of Optometrists (SAO).

“However, if a parent notices anything out of the ordinary before age three,
such as difficulty in mobility, unusual head tilts, unusual eye redness,
excessive eye rubbing, or your child’s eyes appear to not be working together
then they should take their child to see an optometrist immediately.”

From birth to six years, optometrists will watch for proper eye alignment, equal
vision development between eyes, and refractive errors such as astigmatism.

Myopia (shortsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness) also needs to be
checked regularly.

Correcting these types of problems early gives your child a clear picture of the
world as they learn and grow. After your child’s first eye examination, they
should be checked annually until age 18.

Saskatchewan Health statistics for 2006-2007 reveal that only 34 per cent of
Saskatchewan children had their eyes examined prior to entry into the school
system.

Currently the SAO has a pilot project in Saskatoon schools to raise awareness
about the importance of regular eye check-ups.

Most of what a child learns in the early years is acquired visually. A failure
to detect and properly treat visual deficits can severely affect a child’s
learning ability.

As a result, the SAO recommends all children see an eye doctor before beginning
kindergarten and once a year after that.

Saskatchewan Health covers the cost of annual eye exams for children under the
age of 18.

Less likely to experience eye problems, young adults should continue to see
their eye doctor every two to three years.

“The 40’s is the decade when the majority of people’s eyes change more
dramatically,” says Dr. Kolbenson. “In our 40s, we have difficulty reading fine
print and may require reading glasses or bifocals to correct both near and far
vision. Cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration are a little more
prevalent, so we recommend eye exams once every two years.”

After age 65, it’s important to have yearly check-ups, as many eye problems
become more common as we age.

However, Dr. Kolbenson cautions these guidelines are only recommended for those
without risk factors for developing serious eye conditions. Your optometrist
will determine the frequency of visits depending on your eye health.

For example, diabetes can be a major cause of vision loss. Eye examinations for
diabetics are recommended annually in order to prevent or treat diabetic related
vision problems. Diabetes can cause blood vessels at the back of the eye to leak
and hemorrhage, which can cause severe eye damage and vision loss if not treated
promptly.

“All diabetics should have their eyes checked yearly regardless of age,” Dr.
Kolbenson added.

It’s important not to take something as precious as your sight for granted, no
matter what stage of life you’re in. Regular eye check-ups can ensure good
vision now and for years to come.

For more information on eye health, contact your local optometrist or contact
the Saskatchewan Association of Optometrists at 1-877-660-3937 or visit their
website at www.optometrists.sk.ca .
