"Septiembre 5" presenta el fatídico momento que cambió para siempre la cobertura
de noticias en los medios de comunicación y que no ha dejado de influir en el
tratamiento que se da a las noticias de actualidad. Ambientada en los Juegos
Olímpicos de Munich de 1972, la película narra las peripecias de un equipo de
retransmisión deportiva estadounidense que hace rápidamente la transición de la
información deportiva a la cobertura en directo del secuestro de los atletas
israelíes. A través de este prisma, "Septiembre 5" aborda, desde una perspectiva
novedosa, la retransmisión en directo que en aquel momento fue vista en todo el
mundo por unos mil millones de personas.

La historia gira alrededor de Geoff (John Magaro), un joven y ambicioso
productor que se esfuerza por demostrar su valía a su jefe, el legendario
ejecutivo de televisión Roone Arledge (Peter Sarsgaard). Junto con la intérprete
alemana Marianne (Leonie Benesch) y su mentor Marvin Bader (Ben Chaplin), Geoff
toma inesperadamente los mandos de la cobertura en directo. Ante el cambio de
temática y narrativa, con plazos que se agotan, rumores contradictorios
difundidos por doquier y la vida de los rehenes pendiendo de un hilo, Geoff se
enfrenta a decisiones difíciles y sus propios conflictos éticos.
