HOPE WANES AMID THE WRECKAGE WHERE 600 APARTMENTS ONCE STOOD

BY SERGEY PONOMAREV, PHOTOGRAPHER

REPORTING FROM ANTAKYA, TURKEY

No building remains intact at 600 Konut, an apartment complex in Antakya,
Turkey, near the epicenter of the earthquake. Many residents were killed in the
collapse.

Family members gathered around the body of a relative recovered in the rubble.
After I arrived Wednesday, several bodies were recovered over the course of the
day.

Others waited for news about loved ones, but the chance of finding survivors is
decreasing. Many residents spent the night in their cars or warming by bonfires.

Some sifted through the rubble for possessions.

This was a typical scene: Workers cutting through tangles of rebar. Excavators
shifting massive concrete slabs. And everyone looking on. Waiting.

As the third day wore on, I sensed that many were losing hope.
