Baltimore Bridge Collapse Death Toll as Victims Revealed

TL/DR: "At this point, we do not believe we are going to find any of these
individuals still alive," Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath said at a news
conference late on Tuesday.

Officials have decided to suspend search-and-rescue operations for the missing
six construction workers after the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore,
Maryland, collapsed early Tuesday morning.

Why it matters: The Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning after a freighter
ship departing from Baltimore's Inner Harbor lost power and plowed into the
span. Eight construction workers were patching potholes on the bridge at the
time of the collapse. Two of the workers have been found. The Baltimore Banner
reported that the workers were from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico
and they lived in Dundalk and Highlandtown. According to Jesus Campos, an
employee of Brawner Builders who talked to the newspaper, the men were in their
30s and 40s and had spouses and children. CASA for All, a grassroots advocacy
group supporting immigrant families in the U.S., wrote in a press release that
one of its members, Miguel Luna, was among the dead.

What happens now? The bodies of the six workers have not yet been recovered.
Attempts to find them will resume today, Colonel Roland Butler of the Maryland
State Police said. Meanwhile, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore has said there is no
bridge reconstruction timeline. President Joe Biden said he intends to have the
federal government "pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge. The
Port of Baltimore added in a post to X, formerly Twitter, that traffic in and
out of the port is "suspended until further notice."

Trump Gag Order May Stifle His 'Violence-Inspiring' Bombast: Legal Analyst

TL/DR: "I applaud any gag order that is put in place that is designed to shut
Donald Trump up, specifically to stop him from endangering everybody who is
involved in the endeavor of trying to hold Donald Trump accountable for his
crimes," Glenn Kirschner said.

The latest gag order imposed on Donald Trump was applauded by legal analyst
Glenn Kirschner, who said he hopes it curtails the former president's "endlessly
dangerous, violence-inspiring rhetoric."

Why it matters: New York State Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan, presiding
over Trump's hush-money case involving Stormy Daniels, imposed a gag order on
the former president, limiting what he can say publicly about individuals
related to the trial involving financial transactions from Trump's 2016
presidential campaign. It's one of several gag orders that have been issued to
Trump amid his sea of legal challenges, and the former president's campaign said
the restrictions violate his First Amendment rights. Tuesday's gag order came
hours after Trump attacked Merchan and his daughter in a post on Truth Social,
calling the judge a "certified Trump Hater.

What happens now? The hush money case is scheduled to head to trial on April 15.

NBC Drops Ronna McDaniel as Host

TL/DR: After mounting backlash, NBC News cut ties with the former Republican
National Committee chairwoman.

NBC News has dropped Republican National Committee (RNC) chairwoman Ronna
McDaniel after fierce backlash from several prominent on-air personalities.
NBCUniversal News Group Chairman Cesar Conde cited what he said were "the
legitimate concerns" of network employees and apologized for a "difficult" few
days since the announcement.

Why it matters: McDaniel was hired on Friday to provide political analysis on
MSNBC and NBC as the November presidential election approaches. She left her
position at the RNC earlier this month following a request for new leadership
from former President Donald Trump. Before making her debut on NBC's Meet the
Press on Sunday, the network faced calls for a boycott over the hiring. Many
critics voiced outrage over McDaniel's boosting of Trump's unproven claims of a
"stolen" 2020 election, a position she appeared to reverse during the interview
by conceding that President Joe Biden won "fair and square."

What happens now? McDaniel's next move is unclear. At the time of publication,
she had not publicly weighed in on NBC's decision and could not be reached for
comment. In addition to being fired by NBC on Tuesday, McDaniel was also
reportedly dropped by the Creative Artists Agency (CAA), which brokered her deal
with the network shortly after leaving the RNC, according to The Hollywood
Reporter.

Ukraine Maps Reveal Russian Advances Along Frontline

TL/DR: Russia is making incremental gains near Bakhmut as its forces maintain
momentum in the Donetsk oblast.

Russian forces are maintaining momentum in Ukraine's Donetsk region, making
marginal gains near Bakhmut, according to the Institute for the Study of War
(ISW). Check out the maps showing the latest state of play on the front line.

Why it matters: A Russian military blogger claimed Russia's 11th Separate Guards
Air Assault (VDV) Brigade had completely seized Ivanivske, although the ISW has
not seen any evidence. On Monday, Russian forces attacked border areas and
settlements of Sumy oblast causing at least 181 explosions with no casualties
reported. Russia has stepped up its attacks on the region in recent weeks, with
the town of Velyka Pysarivka positioned on the border being a main target.

What happens now? Ukraine awaits further Western military assistance, with a
U.S. package held up in U.S. Congress. However, France said it would supply Kyiv
with 78 Caesar howitzers and has boosted its production of artillery rounds.
According to French Defense Minister SĂ©bastien Lecornu, Paris will also deliver
80,000 155 mm artillery shells to Ukraine in 2024, a considerable increase from
30,000 rounds last year.

China Migrants Flooding US Island Raises Alarms

TL/DR: "Any extent or degree of these concerns and risks to national security
making their presence in Guam is unwelcome and considered serious," Guam Customs
and Quarantine (CQA) spokeswoman Alana Chargualaf-Afaisen told Newsweek.

Chinese nationals who come into Guam from the Commonwealth of the Northern
Mariana Islands (CNMI) and circumvent or manipulate the process for legal entry
"continues to be of concern," a Guam customs official told Newsweek. Here's what
they said.

Why it matters: Critics say that the Guam-CNMI Visa Waiver Program, which allows
Chinese individuals to seek asylum or work illegally, has made the U.S. more
vulnerable to nefarious Chinese Communist Party-led activities. 118 unlawful or
attempted unlawful entries by Chinese citizens have been reported since 2022.
The most cases occurred that year, with 85, followed by 27 in 2023 and six in
2024 through January.

US Coast Guard Boards Chinese Vessels

What happens now? To detect and identify threats from unlawful arrivals, the
Guam Customs and Quarantine (CQA) works with various agencies. Other concerns
have risen over Chinese nationals in Guam and their intent, given that the small
Pacific island some 6,000 miles from California is firmly in the crosshairs of a
potential U.S.-China military conflict.
