OMAR, SANDERS SLAM MANCHIN FOR REJECTING BUILD BACK BETTER: ‘I THINK IT’S
BULL—-‘

by Tony Gray
December 19, 2021

Democrats are up in arms after Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) announced Sunday he
would not support President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better (BBB) legislation. The
hostility they are expressing is not quite the same level aimed at former
President Donald Trump after he derailed Hillary Clinton’s coronation. But, it
is close.

Minnesota’s U.S. Representative, Ilhan Omar (D-5th C.D.), swore in her reaction
to Manchin’s explanation of being a “No” for the BBB. She remonstrated his
constituents would benefit as much as hers with more childcare, pre-Medicare
expansion, and long-term care.

“This is exactly what we warned would happen if we separated Build Back Better
from infrastructure,” the mild-mannered Muslim congresswoman added.

Omar was referring to the decoupling of the physical and social infrastructure
bills that combined to form a Christmas wish list of Democrats’ priorities.
Progressives in the House, like Omar, had held the physical infrastructure bill
hostage until the social infrastructure bill received a Senate vote.

After missing many deadlines and unmet promises from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi,
the physical infrastructure bill received House approval in mid-November. All
eyes turned to the Senate after House Democrats added back items that raised
issues for senators. Some issues, like immigration measures, ran afoul of the
so-called Byrd-bath given to reconciliation bills when the Senate
Parliamentarian ruled against including it in the BBB legislation.

The political world was focused squarely on Manchin, though, because he had
expressed concerns about the legislation from the get-go. He has held firm
against pressure to get on the BBB bandwagon because of concerns he stated about
inflation, national debt, and turning the United States into an entitlement
society. Many political observers expected Manchin to come around. Fox News host
Maria Bartiromo told former President Donald Trump Saturday she expected Manchin
would eventually get to “Yes” on the BBB.

“What we need to do is get our financial house in order but be able to pay for
what we do and do what we pay for,” he told host Bret Baier. The West Virginia
senator was probably referring to recent reports of record inflation, impending
interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve, and a Wharton School of Business
report that BBB would cost closer to $5 trillion than $1.7 trillion.

Fiery Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders teed off on Manchin, as he has been doing for
months. Even though Sanders was elected as an Independent, he caucuses with the
Democratic Party and chairs the Senate’s Budget Committee. He challenged
Manchin, in a Facebook post, to cast an actual “No” vote on the Senate floor and
explain to the country why he voted against the BBB.

CNN’s “State of the Union” posted a portion of his post on their Twitter page,
along with a video clip of Sanders speaking on the issue. “If he doesn’t have
the courage to do the right thing for the working families of West Virginia and
America, let him vote no in front of the whole world,” Sanders fumed.

New York Congressman Mondaire Jones (D-17th C.D.) likened Manchin to the Grinch
who stole Christmas. “Joe Manchin’s Christmas gift to the American people?”
asked Jones before answering his own question, “Higher household costs,
expensive medications, and climate catastrophe.”

“Coal would have been a lot easier,” Jones said about the senator from the
coal-mining capital of the country.
